I searched for hotels near the Beijing South Railway station. While this came up, the accompanying internet based information (not supplied by the hotel) was really, really in error.
The hotel is a 20 RMB cab ride from the subway. However, we learned while here (4 days) that there are two subway stations within a 13 minute walk. You may choose either Puhuangyu (line 5) or Jingtai (line 14). I timed both with a stopwatch. My wife and I are in our 60s and each location easy to reach.
Now for the hotel.
Staff - friendly, helpful and eager to please. We had two maintenance issues with our room (toilet would not flush and a window would not seal). The staff fixed the toilet before we got back from our day travels and corrected the window without us even asking.
Rooms - This hotel was not remodeled yesterday. But our room was clean, the linens smelled fresh; our room had no odor of smoke as others have reported; and the shower delivered much hot water.
Lounge/Bar - did not go.
Breakfast - We found a wide variety of buffet served foods. You may ask the chef for eggs just about any way you like them. Fresh fruit, two tables of bread and muffins. Of course, many Asian selections and real coffee. Fresh ground and strong.
Location - We already addressed the proximity to the subways. Our first day trip we walked maybe a block and got on bus 102 toward the Temple of Heaven. And to our mild embarrassment got off in another three blocks for we were there.
The hotel seems to be in a neighborhood. There are multiple small shops around. I read some reviews where the writer felt nervous walking around. We never did. It is dark. In China most outdoor areas are not well lit at night. But we encountered many instances of individuals walking alone. We have lived in China for almost three years and have never felt "nervous" in this country. Ok, except for moving vehicles.
Final judgment - We were comfortable here. And if the opportunity arises to come to Beijing again, this hotel would definitely fit our needs.

Stayed there last December with family, the location is not congested with traffic. Not much to see in the area though. Wide variety of food to choose from and we enjoyed our daily breakfast. Big rooms with lots of space for our baggages.

The hotel is a bit old needs some redoing, stayed here because it is relative close to the south railway station. The front desk staff was very kind and helpful, checked in late at night. In the morning we wanted to take the coffee as take away, but they did not have take away cups, this was a bummer. Overall the sleep quality was good.

The location leaves much to be desired (we took cabs everywhere as we never felt completely comfortable walking at night around the hotel). However, the staff was very friendly and helpful and there was always an English speaker to help with a tour or dinner recommendation!
To note on cabs in Beijing-- always make sure you have small bills and try to pay exact (many tourists have been fooled by a cab driver stating that a 100 bill is fake and then forced the tourist to pay another 100$). Also, ensure that you have the taxi driver start the meter and do not agree to a flat fee. A flat fee will almost always be 30-40% more than if you have the driver run the meter (even if the drive is across the city!). Otherwise cabs are cheap and an effective way to travel through the city and you can get almost anywhere in Beijing for a reasonable fee from this location. For instance the summer palace which is about the furthest site seeing location was reachable for us in the equivalent of 6$ U.S. when running on the meter in a cab.
Also, cab drivers will refuse you if they think the distance is too short. Instead, as soon as the cab stops get in and then give your address. They cannot refuse you then.

The hotel was well fitted and clean inside.
The bad side was we booked 3 people for room and free breakfast. We then had to spend the next 2 days arguing with the hotel that a room for 3 people including breakfast means that 2 people get breakfast, not that breakfast is for one person.
Was sorted out after 2 days but hard to accept that we had to have an argument in the first place.
The hotel was close to the subway ( 5 min walk) and was surrounded by Chinese restaurants, no Maccas here.
