Disappointing

Arriving at the hotel it looks a bit dated but basically clean and tidy. Check-in was fast, friendly and efficient, matching what is now generally found at HI. Room key card would not open room and had to be replaced at reception.

All through the evening the heating kept shutting itself off, not by a thermostat as the room was cold, but simply switching itself off and having to be switched on again to run for about 4-10 minutes. The telephone had an intermittent defect so was effectively unusable. Shower gel/shampoo from a squeeze bottle ran out while I was having a shower. While the curtains themselves were an effective black out, because they did not fit closely to the wall at the side of the window there was always light coming in from the car park floodlights. The TV had a limited selection of Freeview channels although the picture quality was good. The cover for the batteries in the TV remote control was missing so that the batteries kept falling out. The pillows were below normal HI standard and it was virtually impossible to identify which was supposed to be soft or firm. Bathroom cleaning had not been perfect and the shower controls were flimsy and loose despite being from Grohe a reputable manufacturer.

Dinner was a very acceptable meal at a reasonable price for a hotel that is not close to other restaurants. Service was excellent with a friendly, helpful and efficient waitress and there was a comprehensive gin menu. Breakfast was a fairly standard HI buffet with a reasonably good selection of hot and cold options with the hot items being regularly topped up.

At check out I presented the gentleman on duty with a summary of defects even though some had been reported previously. He spent quite a while implying that defects such as heating were my fault and that I simply did not understand how to operate a simple heating controller. I refrained from telling him that I have had over 40 years of responsibility for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems of many types.

Overall a very mixed bag. Disappointing for a Holiday Inn and the impression made by very good staff, who were representative of the great improvements that IHG has made to customer service over the last 5 -0 10 years, was spoiled by my final staff encounter with the gentleman at check-out.

Handy place to know

Although slightly out of town centre, it is still a good central base to explore the area or for staying while visiting family. The rooms are being renovated and are comfortable and clean. The rooms on floor 4 and above are best. Great views over the city.

Staff are friendly and polite. The reception staff are most helpful. Rooms are a reasonable price too.

The only down side are the dreaded coach tours. They take over the lobby, the bar and despite the hotel's best efforts also the breakfast. It is ok when there is one coach but not so good when several arrive at the same time and saturate the lobby.

Weekend Visit

This hotel was clean with just a few dust issues. The staff were very helpful and courteious . The meals were excellent and a good choice. Basic rooms, but for 2 people should have 2 comfy chairs to sit on not one and yes there was room to put them. If you had room service I dont know were you would eat your food . Plenty of room but not utilsed to the best of its abilty, with just a little thought could have been better.

Sightseeing - North East

Good comfortable room. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's a typical Holiday Inn and we would stay here again.

Well positioned for Durham, Newcastle and the countryside.

We went to Hadrians Wall which means some superb countryside.

Late September trip

My last trip up North for a couple of days at the cricket before before the winter sets in, a good location, within three miles of the ground, warm friendly welcome, nice atmosphere, comfortable room and a really good nights sleep, I will definitely stay here again, not just because of its locality to the cricket, but I know what I’m getting and I know what I like
