I've just spent a wonderful week at Stresa on Lake Maggiore in the Astoria Hotel. Although I know the area well I have never stayed in Stresa before and found the location ideal for travelling around by boat. The views from the hotel were uninterrupted and the evenings spent just sitting admiring the lake, with a drink in hand, were extremely pleasant. The restaurant is large and airy with excellent service from Fabio and his team. The menus were varied and afforded plenty of choice. Everything was well cooked and presented, with a wine list offering complementary wines. The bar service was friendly and efficient and was available at the front of the hotel and in the gardens by the pool.
The public rooms are are attractive and well tended, as are the gardens. I travelled with three friends and we found our rooms comfortable with a spacious terrace overlooking the garden and pool. I can still smell the jasmine! The rooms are a little dated in their decor but spotlessly clean and well provided with amenities. I would certainly stay here again by this very beautiful lake.

Myself and my husband stayed here for 5 nights in June and could not fault this outstanding hotel. The views are just stunning of Lake Maggoire. The rooms are of a very high standard with a lovely balcony and bedding is changed daily. There is air conditioning in the rooms and shutters to keep the rooms cool. The food is gorgeous and on the last night there was a buffet which was faultless with over 40 starters, a lovely carvery and over 20 desserts. The drinks are very reasonable, I would recommend the cocktails, the pina colada is fantastic and the staff very polite and helpful. The town is a few minutes walk away with many gift shops and plenty of places to eat. You can catch a boat across to the islands or take a cable car and chair lift ride up a mountain. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

In every way this hotel exceeds expectations.
The views of the lake are stunning.
The food particularly the evening meals were excellent.
The staff are most obliging.
The room was very comfortable.
The list of Italian wines was very good

Absolutely gorgeous hotel. Fantastic service - friendly helpful staff. Within walking distance to everything but be prepared to pay 40 EUR for the evening buffet which is superb. Pay the extra for a lake view room - priceless!!

We have visited the Astoria several times over the years and each time we are impressed by the total ambiance of the hotel.
The staff, particularly the dining room staff are superb; professional, friendly and extremely efficient.
Its just a short walk from the town centre and bus/boat stops.
Its very much worth taking your RHS card to Stresa as it gives free entry to Isola Bella and Isola Madre. This saves cash and allows you to bypass the queues
