A decent little spot close to the action

Hotel Bijou is a funny little place. In some ways it is excellent, in others not so much.
Pros:
The location is awesome. It is one block off market street, two blocks from the Powell Cablecar turn around, and within walking distance of the Ferry Building (25 minutes), Union Square (10 minutes) and Chinatown (15 minutes). BART is also just 2 blocks away.
The lobby was recently remodeled and they have opened a restaurant called Gibsons. I did not eat in Gibsons but it was full every night of my visit.
Upon arrival I was offered a glass of wine, there was always plenty of free coffee in the lobby and each morning a brown paper bag breakfast (fruit, pastry, bottled water) was provided.
I stayed in room 609 "Inner Space". The room has 2 double beds. They were super soft and comfortable. The room was clean, had a small accent chair as well as a desk and desk chair. There was no refrigerator, but I could have requested one from the front desk.
The wifi signal in my room was strong. There was a small closet with extra pillows and a flat screen tv.
The hairdryer in my room also worked very well.
The staff were lovely. I don't know their names, but each person I encountered seemed genuinely interested in conversation.
I am female and travelled solo to San Francisco this trip. At 5am the morning of 11/8 I was being picked up for a photography tour, just me and the guide. The man working the night shift took special care to chat with and check out my guide, just to make sure he wasn't sketchy and that I would be safe.
Cons:
The hotel is old. The decor is worn. The curtains on my window were ripped. They will be remodeling soon so the cosmetic issues should be resolved soonish.
The bathroom was very tiny and the water pressure in the shower was pretty bad. I adjusted the shower head to a stronger setting to help mitigate the pressure issue. I am 5'7" so did not need to duck to use the shower, those taller than me would. On the plus side the hot water never ran out (which can be an issue in older buildings).
The room has no air conditioning. San Francisco's weather is generally mild so for my stay this was not an issue.
The hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin. As a solo female traveler I always felt safe, but my room on the 6th floor faced Eddy Street. Eddy is home to a VERY vocal collection of homeless people. At least 20. With the window opened or closed their screams through the night were tedious. And I mean screams. There was screaming, yelling and my favorite (not) was the boom box party that seemed to go from about 11:00pm-4am every morning. There is nothing like hearing the 80's hit "Let's Hear for the Boy" blasting outside of your room at 3am. I have no idea why the police never came to move the group along. I suspect this is just their spot.
So I didn't sleep great. Ear plugs or being on another side of the building would have helped.
In general I would stay at the Bijou again. I got my room for a great price and the good of the place definitely outweighed the questionable.
A reasonably priced botique hotel within walking distance of Union Square

The Bijou is an older hotel in an older building. The rooms are small and as best I could tell there is no Air Conditioning.Although I was there on a 90+ degree day and the room was fairly comfortable with the window open after sunset. All that said the hotel is in a good location. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the prices for the Neighborhood are very good. Their web page says they are on Union Square. That is kind of a stretch. They are a few uphill blocks away from Union Square. On the other hand they are a block from the Powell street Bart Station and the end of the Powell street Cable car line. They are also that same block away from the San Francisco Westfields shopping center and a reasonable walk (not up or down hill) to the Ferry building (more shopping) and the baseball park where the Giants play.
Excellent service and nice room

We stayed for one night only in room 411, which was very quiet, clean and comfortable. The staff at the front desk were extremely welcoming and friendly, and gave us free coffee and a glass of red wine upon arrival.
The only downside, which is out of the hotel’s hands, is that Mason Street is on the border of a pretty sketchy neighbourhood. Easy enough to avoid though.
Cicero the great!!

made my reservation for my daughter a little late but Cicero was an absolute hero for the night he was so helpful when i was nothing but worried about my adult child. He not only kept me informed but completely aware of everything along the way. I don't know if i could have made it without having a coronary without his help. Definitely will be doing business here again!#
Nice little European style hotel with a great staff.

This a charming little hotel but needs some fixing up. The floor felt warped off the elevator, down the hallway and in our room. Our room did not have a working phone and there is no air conditioning in the hotel. The staff is wonderful and helpful, trustworthy and helpful. My only issue was the location (near Union Square) but was more in the Tenderloin district and we were bothered by vagrants outside the hotel every time we left and returned.
