AnneMK1on 10/02/2017 18:07We were hiking in northern Italy and ended our day in the dark in the village of St. Jacques. We were supposed to stay at a rifugio but had to change our plans due to weather. There were no hotels open in this small village but a very nice young woman can to our assistance and drove us about 4 miles to the next village where we found the Hotel California. The woman at the front desk welcomed us warmly and showed us to our room, the "Bob Dylan" room. When she opened the door Bob Dylan's voice started to play from the wall speakers! It was a bit surreal in the middle of a small village in the Italian Alps. We went down to the bar/restaurant and had a most welcome glass of wine and a lovely dinner. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The hotel is a bit funky with an American rock, folk, and country music theme. We loved it.
A titanic waiting
andrea156666on 04/01/2017 20:55Slow service. Relaxed if you have plenty of time. - good choice the far west sandwich names. The menu is a safe place to hide. Never changed over 20 yrs. Inside you'll feel in the dark while outside the beauty of the Alps is waiting. Average food. It's definitely ok to eat if it's on your way. And don't expect to be quickly out if there're more than 10 customers. Keep off on busy holydays. Beer is a great choice. Guinness, Kilkenny, Harp
Difficult route ended up in nice location
Cowblondon 15/08/2016 17:38The road to here is not an easy one; once you get out of autobahn, you will start driving uphill on a challenging road with plenty of curves that reduces your speed down to 20 km/h sometimes. We drove at night time which made it tougher, so it is recommended to drive on day time.
Hotel is located in the beautiful valley with a great nature. The design of the hotel is great with all wooden work outside and inside (in public areas) of the hotel.
It is a concept hotel, each room has a Rock Star's name and some music in the room of that singer as soon as you enter the room, which was a nice surprise.
The negative aspects of the hotel are:
- We had difficulty to find the hotel at night and called the hotel but there was no one who could speak sufficient English to describe the route, unbelieveable!
- The bathroom of the room could be better designed. I even had to go to reception to ask for a hair dryer.
However, still the hotel recommended thanks to it's great nature and location.
Reasonable
sarneon 13/02/2016 12:01Stayed for four nights with family and friends. The hotel is somewhat thematic and has this peculiar musical themes in all rooms. Rooms are spacious and the beds are a bit to hard to feel comfortable. No problem handling ski equipment (room in basement). Ski bus stop outside hotel, ten minutes walk to the village. Good idea to bring the car all the time, to Frachey funicular (2 min) and the village (1 min).
Very few people this part of the season (end of January) and business in the bar was slow. Too thematic or just a bit too far away from the village?
Tried the restaurant, same as breakfast room, and they served ordinary dishes. You can pre order Paella which seemed to be good for those buying that dish.
Breakfast was Italian, i.e. cakes and biscuits. Every thing is sweetened even the croissants!
All in all an ordinary hotel experience, but ok.
THE PLACE TO STAY IN CHAMPOLUC.
James Don 13/07/2012 16:38My wife and I have stayed at this hotel on many occasions, both during the summer and whilst skiing in Monte Rosa. The owners, Marina and Guido have become good friends over the years and offer a warm welcome to everyone. Breakfasts are continental buffet style including hard boiled eggs,the lunchtime snacks are excellent value and dinners are very good, with Guido's home made pastas, second to none. Preprandial nibbles are always offered with drinks and an aperitivo known there as "Bicicletta"( a cocktail of Campari and white wine) always tickles the taste buds.
The property is situated a brisk ten minute walk from the main gondola depending on snow depth in the forest, but a ski bus passes regularly.
Cannot recommend the hotel highly enough. Last time we stayed was in 2008, but visited briefly in January 2012.
