It‘s ok

I have just arrived home after a six night stay at the Boutique Hotel California. My first impression as I walked into the reception was that it was smaller than I expected, obviously some wide angle photography used on the web. Checkin went smoothly, the employee on the desk was very pleasant with a nice friendly smile and a porter took my bags up to the room.
The room itself (609) was adequate, a little dated and tired but very clean with a large and comfortable bed. The minibar was well stocked and there was a nice basket of various chocolate bars if that’s your thing. One item that did surprise me was a packet of condoms on top of the minibar. At first I thought it had been left by another guest but no, I It’s on the list of items for purchase along with the drinks and chocolate bars.
The bathroom was small with only a shower and while clean the brown colors make it feel dark and uninviting. Complimentary toiletries, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion along with slippers and dressing gown were ready for the guests use.
My only real disappointment was the food. Breakfast was very limited and not particularly tasty, however the coffee is excellent. After my experience I decided to eat out of the hotel.
Boutique Hotel California is in an almost perfect location, with almost all of the important sights about a half hour walk away.
I think it represents good value for money for travelers on a budget. Would I stay there again? Probably.
Great place to stay in Odessa

Very quiet and well located. 10 minutes walk to the center. Good breakfast and very good coffee!! Room service is very fast and friendly. Overall a good stay and would stay there again on my next visit.

Located approx. 30 mins drive from airport ODS. Hotel provides transfer UAH500 (normal rate is around UAH200). Located in the city centre you are within walkingdistance for everything, shopping, eateries & sights. Nextdoor neighbour is the ortodox synagoge and the street is not too busy or noisy if you choose to sit outside.
Hotel is well maintained, clean & quite exentric in its decor. Notsure if the hotel is profiling itself as a holidayhotel or business hotel. The hotel offers a beautyparlor and I think also a spa which I did not see.
My room was in fact a singleroom and was not really the same as on the pictures I saw by the provider. Small and compact indeed. The socalled balcony was 10 cm wide (should not be described as a balcony as it is unusable). Bed was firm and comfortable, pillows comfortable, linnen of very good quality. Wellstocked minibar, aircon and wifi which mostly worked fine. TV had more than 70 channels- in ukranian, russian and belarussian language. No other languages, which is the first for me. I recommend at least a news channel in English, german and some other language.
Bathroom also compact but adequate, plenty of hot water in showercubicle, plenty of toiletries, good fluffy towels & bathrobe. Rooms cleaned daily and to perfection. I found the cleaning staff friendly and efficient.
Restaurant is the hotels biggest downfall. I was on a breakfast/lunch basis. Breakfastservice did not start until 8AM, which is quite late for a cityhotel- if you are on business or need to go on tour, you will probably go hungry. Not only for the late start but for the service- if you can call it service. Most mornings staff seemed surpriced that people were ready at 8AM, because they were not ready. For a cup of coffee you could wait between 30-45 mins. I recommend they make thermos with coffee so people can serve themselves. Breakfastselection was good.
Lunch served between 1PM-2PM, not much to choose from but no complaints here.
Dinnerservice was a disaster, had two dinners here. One good, the next took 1 hour to prepare and was cold when served. I recommend the Tavernetta restaurant on the corner instead, fresh food, quick & friendly service.
You can sit outside and have a coffee or meal- but dont expect to be served. Service is slow or non existing. Ordered drinks 3 times but it never arrived. Go buy your coffee next door at "Bake my cake" where service is quick and friendly.
Restaurant staff mostly were unfriendly and you got the feeling that you were in their way. Most girls were busy chatting or checking their phones instead of serving their guests. One morning girl did not know how to make coffee??! Disaster...
Doormen and bellhop were very friendly and helpful. Frontdesk staff not overly extrovert but friendly.
For the rate I got for my 1 week stay, I can not complain, but I would probably choose another hotel for my next stay.
Odessa is a lovely city and definately worth visiting, and I will be back.
Why is it called California?

The hotel is nicely located. The rooms have really strange design, like you have returned back in time. Looks soviet not in a good way to me. Our room was clean. TV didn't work well. The shower is clean, but tiny. During our stay we wondered all the time why did they call it California :) breakfast is super limited and not good. There is wifi in the hotel
Good value for money

I stayed here 1 night and got a quite small but nice room. The location was really good and the staff was really friendly and helpful. Breakfast and lunch was included and it was good even though the lunch was almost the same as the warm alternatives of the breakfast. Great value for money though as the price was really a bargain.
