We arrived by car from Montevideo. Large room. city view. Not the 6 star hotel, but also not a 6 star price tag! The only thing disturbing was the old style blanquets. I like the nordic style blanquets better than wool blanquets on top a bet sheet. Never mind, we were there for business, and that was successfull! Incredible value for money in their restaurant. Buffet. Some dishes quite good. Some nice red wines at very low price!
Anyway, there was no other choice to stay, I beleive.

My review is based on the fact that this is a South American business travellers hotel. Upon arriving we were met by a kid on the street who saved us a parking spot (haha)and then carried our bags up to the lobby for a small gratuity. Reception was fast and efficient. The rooms are older but they are clean and comfortable including the pillows. They have a very popular Brazilian churrascaria(different meat on a skewer served at your table) restaurant on the main floor which we loved. Breakfast was fairly typical and free so I will not critique it. We also arranged our amethyst quarry tour from here. We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night so as is typical of any small town anywhere everybody was out having a good time so by midnight earplugs were necessary. Being on the Brazilian border they understand Portuguese and will take riels and US dollars as payment anywhere in town. You may run into the odd person that speaks English but probably not. If and when we return we will definitely stay here again.

The Hotel Casino San Eugenio is quite a recent hotel, very centraly located in downtown Artigas.
As you'd expect from a new hotel, it has a spacious lobby and well equiped (although not huge) rooms. However, there is a lot of room for improvement.
The elevator is from another time with its two seprate doors that you need to close manually before it goes anywhere. Also, you can hear water running (pipes? drains?) while in the lift. It is quite a disconcerting experience.
On the day we arrived (early December) it was extremely hot in Artigas. And while the lobby's A/C is set to freezing the rest of the common areas and corridors had no A/C, so it was baking hot in the corridors.
As for the A/C in the room, it only works for as long as the card-key was in its slot.
That meant you could cool the room while you're in it but not while you're out. As such, everytime we made it back into the room it was baking hot.
At night, we had the choice of freezing under the A/C (placed directly opposite the bed), sleeping with an open window (not an option as the street outside is quite noisy) and just sweating through the night.
The restaurant was closed and breakfast in the morning was served in a completely charmless room by the reception, better suited for a 2* than a 4*. the breakfast itself was adequate at best.
Last but not least, a list was passed down from one table to another for signing as proof that we had had breakfast. To our surprise it contained not only room numbers, but the name of the occupants, nationality and other personal detail. Amateurish at best. We were not impressed.
While this is probably the best option to stay in in Artigas, we doubt we'd go back.
