A bit old-fashioned, but what a view!
Betty08WhiteRock_BCon 01/10/2017 18:57We chose to stay two nights in Castel Gandolfo for my husband's 65th birthday, and we were delighted with Castel Vecchio. All the staff we encountered were very welcoming and helpful - because we didn't have a cellphone, they very kindly arranged a private tour of the wonderful sites in Albano Laziale (the magnificent Roman cistern and the beautiful Santa Maria della Rotondo), as well as our taxi to Ostia Antica. Our room placement scared us a bit at first, being on level -3, but it was large, very clean and comfortable, and featured a sitting area that had sliding windows opening on to a small terrace with a gorgeous view. The room had all the features we had come to expect and appreciate during our month-long Italian trip (mini fridge, tiled bathroom, storage cupboard), but with that view we hardly noticed. We ate dinner in the restaurant our first night and found the service to be excellent and the food good to very good with enormous portions (we were embarrassed to have not finished our delicious primi piatti of pastas with puttenesca and carbonara sauces). The included buffet breakfast was excellent, with a variety of sweet and savory choices, and included a panini toaster! Also, they have a rooftop swimming pool, but it was too cold for a dip - our only regret. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to return.
Great view and cappuccino
GingerArabon 30/09/2017 09:01We decided to stay outside the noise of Rome and make a day trip to the city. Castel Gandolfo is really well placed for this. The train is punctual, clean and comfortable and at 45 mins from Rome really convenient.
Castel Gandolfo is a quaint little place. With enough to see, nice bars and good restaurants. It’s quiet and has stunning views of the lake tht are at their best in the morning and evening.
The hotel is very Italian, quite basic, functional and dated. It’s very clean and the staff and really friendly and helpful. It’s a good place to stay but it is a little quirky. We like quirky.
We only ate breakfast and that’s very European. Lots of cake, sweet croissants and ham/cheese. Make sure you ask the waiter for a cappuccino though - they are the best.
Lovely view from disappointing room
David Son 26/08/2017 09:19The views from the room and the hotel surroundings are superb. However the room was tiny and very hot at night, even with air con! After checking in the receptionist came to say we might prefer another room which had better air con so we moved. The room was smaller and we then realised the original room was being refurbished so the reason was a "con". Better to be honest. The breakfast was very poor with little savoury or fruit choice though lots for those with a sweet tooth. Prices for drinks and food were excessive after our previous hotel closer to Rome!
Great hotel to relax and enjoy
514izabon 17/07/2017 13:36We staid for 4 nights and were amazed by the lovely view over the lake and surroundings. The hotel has very nice spots to sit and relax. We enjoyed the sunset from the roof terrace. The breakfast was good and we really enjoyed the fresh fruit salad and great coffee every morning. If you like gardens then the Barberini gardens visit by foot with guide is really worthwhile.
