Anniversary Weekend Soured By Rude Front Desk

We booked through Priceline for 2 nights for our anniversary, then decided to add a third night. I called the hotel directly to see if this would be an issue or if there was anything we would need to do. A very nice older lady placed me on hold, spoke with a few other people, and then told me that it was all set. She told me the 2 seperate reservations were linked now so we would not have to check out and check back in on the last night of our stay. I asked several times to make sure I didn't need to do anything else regarding check in and was told no, it was taken care of. When we arrived Eric checked us in and didn't mention us needing to do anything special. Because of this and my previous phone conversation stating we didnt need to do anything special, I figured we were good. We got to our room to find it was decently sized with a comfy bed but not very clean. In the corners of the bathroom there was literal piles of dust/grime and on our headboard there was a sticky tack/ gum like substance. The toilet even had toilet paper already in it. We don't ever complain so we just flushed it, wore socks in the bathroom, and peeled the substance off the headboard with a tissue. When we tried to order room service we realized one phone in the room didn't work at all while the other one took multiple times pressing the buttons and hanging up before we could get it to work. Again, we hate complaining so we said nothing. When I had called to sort out our reservations I also mentioned our anniversary and asked if they did anything special and was told they made a note of it. It was never mentioned. My husband twisted his ankle the night before so we stayed in and tried to make the most of our anniversary. We ordered room service and asked for chocolate covered strawberries to make it special. We were told they usually only did those when notified about special occasions in advance. I was slightly annoyed by this as I had mentioned our anniversary when calling to confirm our booking and was told it was noted. The man sensed my disappointment and was very nice about it and said he would get it done. I even told him it was fine, we didn't want to be a trouble and he assured me it wasn't a trouble, just a little extra paper work. True to his word he made it happen and even called to make sure we got them. When he called we still had not and he assured us he'd find out why and within minutes they were at our door. The doorman was very nice as well. Gave us tips on where to go and after finding out we were in for our anniversary he was excited and told us happy anniversary multiple times. Unfortunately that is where the good customer service ends. On our 2nd morning there I found a slip of paper under our door alerting us it was time to check out. I was confused since I was told over the phone they linked our reservations so that we would not have to check out. I called the front desk thinking it was an error. Nope. Eric told us he needed to check us out and give us new keys and we would have to come down and give our credit card again so they could take a SECOND security deposit. I explained I called ahead and was not told any of this. Eric was very rude and told me I'd have to come downstairs. No apology, just attitude. We did and we were met with another very rude young woman who went as far as to lie and say that no one had told me I wouldn't have to do anything different because she was the one who linked the rooms. The original person I spoke to was an older woman, not this young girl with an attitude. It was humiliating to be treated like a liar in front of people so my husband hurriedly told her it was fine to take out the second security deposit. No apology was given by her either. I would have had no issue doing those things if I had been told in advance or if someone would have apologized for this miscommunication but to be treated like a liar and with attitude from the beginning was ridiculous. Also if this was their policy why was it not mentioned when we checked in? I also mentioned to the rude young woman that we had two non working phones and her response was an irritated "so do you want me to send someone up to fix them?" I was startled by her response as I would assume she would apologize and say someone would fix it instead of rudely acting like it was inconveniencing her. I was so over her and her rudeness that I just told her it could wait til we left as we didn't plan on making any more phone calls.
Overall pros: nice hotel, good location, great convenience store and delicious breakfast restaurant. Also brought us up a refrigerator at no cost upon request which was nice. Good room service food although cheesecake came with caramel sauce instead of lemon and berries as listed on menu. We aren't picky so we ate it and it was still delicious.
Cons: rude staff (beside the doormen and man who helped with the strawberries! They went above and beyond!) Room was not very clean.
A great Hotel in the City's Heart

Was here for a family weekend before staying to conduct business. The hotel staff was excellent and extremely helpful with our children. I went back and forth about giving this hotel 4 or 5 stars - the deciding factor was its people, something that really can make or break a property. Case in point, when the maids cleaned our room, they arranged our kids' blankets, stuffed animals and pillows on their beds in a fashion and quality I can only refer to as: Disney-esque.
The exterior is blah, but I try not to hold that against an ownership who commits to interior upgrades and service. The rooms aren't overly-large, but you can tell money was spent to modernize and utilize the old positives (like the bathrooms). No great views, but you are close to everything around the River, and a short Uber /Taxi to wherever you want to go. You do have decent views of the old Marina Towers, which is pretty cool (circular towers on the River - crazy European architect who designed it for flying cars....can't believe I still remember that fact from childhood).
The hotel also has a breakfast/brunch restaurant that is fantastic - some of the best we've had in the City and reasonably priced. There are better looking hotels with better views of the City), but you won't find better service, especially for smaller children.
We had a great time and will be back.

It’s just off the river and a street from the magnificent mile. Good location to get around downtown Chicago. The hotel itself, is sufficient. I don’t know if it’s just me. I had a hard time finding the elevators for the guest room. It’s a bit small and that causes the layout of things to be a little strange. With autograph collection hotels, you never know how it is until you get there. The room is clean and neat. The concierge lounge is also well stocked and has good breakfast and evening offerings. Overall, this hotel doesn’t disappoint.
Ideal location

My wife & I chose this hotel for our first visit to Chicago & it proved an inspired choice.
Our room was clean & well appointed, if a little small, with my only minor grumbles being the complimentary drinking water not being replaced daily and no complimentary Wi Fi , unless you sign up to the loyalty scheme.
However, overall the hotel is great, it is ideally located in downtown Chicago & perfect for touring the city. The “Yoke” diner next to the lobby is great for breakfast or brunch.
The staff were all friendly & helpful, but a special mention must go to Russell the Concierge, he was brilliant and extremely helpful - if he was British we would Knight him!
