Absolutely Wonderful Place!

From the moment we walked into this hotel we received the best service ever. We had been staying at a Hilton Hotel the previous 3 nights and the service was awful. It was like a breath of fresh air to walk into this delightful independently owned hotel. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable with a huge deck overlooking the garden and pool. The food in the restaurant was great and the service was excellent. Breakfast was very good too and served on the patio. The pool and facilities were amazing. I highly recommend this hotel. Its not right on the beach but worth a little drive to have great service. We even booked an extra night because it was so lovely.
Thank you to Claudo and his great staff for a wonderful time here. You really looked after us!
Great hotel

The check in was quick and professional. A very friendly young lady walked us to our room. The room was newly refurbished, full of taste and usefulness. We also had a lovely fish dinner on the terrace of their restaurant. The parking lot is huge and the swimming pool very refreshing. I highly recommend it.
I left feeling a bit flat

This for me is one of those hotels that I just did not quiet get or click with.
Ok before I have too much of a rant, let's set the scene
My wife and I are not Italian, so we had arrived in the area to check out what there was on offer and this hotel on the internet looked like a great stay.
Not having driven in Italy much before the addresses and post codes of Hotels I struggled with, and in this case that was an issue, because the "Aurelia km 156" is the most important part of the address detail they give you.
It specifically translates to a distance posted on white markers that are spread out on the highway itself, that mean in our case 156kms from Rome. Not realising this fact meant we relied upon hotel signage to find our hotel. That was a mistake, because Hotel Fontermosa's sign that you can see from the highway, does not say Hotel Fontermosa, it simply says Hotel. The hotel itself is not viewable from the road, so no relaying on trip-advisor photos of the facade either. The sign that does say Hotel Fontermosa is a small sign right in the driveway entrance which is only viewable if you are arriving from the Rome end (which of course we weren't).
Ok so all that lack of knowledge and research, meant we missed the entrance (a driveway directly off the highway itself) by a factor of some 20kms. Only after spending a bit of time chatting to a very helpful local a few towns on, did we realise our mistake and use the motorway markers to locate the entrance. All of this is not the hotels fault (well perhaps the signage that could be better thought out).
It also wasn't the hotel's fault the weather was a bit rainy, cold and extremely windy, meaning a number of our planned outdoor pursuits had to be canceled.
So not a great start, but I have had worse on other trips and still enjoyed the hotel experience.
So here is where I struggle with this hotel. It's a nice place, it's not massive and only has rooms on two floors, but its is a very clean tidy and well formed hotel. The restaurant was ok (bearing in mind we only ate breakfasts in it, but we were informed it specalises in seasonal fish if you choose to eat dinner here).
Our room was nice, not huge, but well apportioned with everything you could want (except for electrical sockets, there is only sockets for the lamps, and TV, so no charging of that all important phone or laptop without sacrificing a lamp or two. Notice I did not say TV in that statement, how sad am I).
On the second floor, you have a personal balcony, ours looked out over the pool area. The pool area was out of action for maintenance and we watched some new trees being planted along its edges, but I can imagine in the summer, it would be a fantastic spot to chill out.
The staff are all very pleasant and helpful, no complaints there.
Ok all sounds great so where is the issue. It's the location, it is not on the beach across the motorway, or in a town where you can wonder off to a local cafe. It's hidden off the motorway on the side of a major railway line. And because of that it in my view lacks purpose, and a sole. it also means you are always in and out of your car, because nothing you will want to do in the region is anything like close to this hotel.
There is loads in this area that this hotel could be connected to (wind surfing, kite surfing, boating, horses, mountain bikes, etc...), but it appears to have no connection to any of these, its just a nice hotel in the middle of nowhere.
For that reason we found ourselves constantly saying things like "oh if we came back to do so and so, we would want to stay there or there". At no time in our conversations did we say we would come back to the Hotel Fontermosa, and that is a shame, because it's a nice hotel.
Apologies Hotel Fontermosa, but you just did not do it for me.
Great hotel with a spectacular garden and pool!!

We had an amazing stay at Fontermosa. The owner Claudio is very welcoming and attentive. His staff is also very friendly and go out of their way to make our stay pleasant and to fullfill individual requests. They booked tennis for us or provided us with a late breakfast. The pool is an absolute highlight. It s very big, located in a beautiful pine tree park and is filled with thermal water instead of normal chloride cleaned water which is much better for your skin. Also dont forget to try maremma beer while you are here! Delicious! The location is also good because you are far away from the touristy and often packed porto ercole/st stefano area. Instead you have beaches nearby in talamone and gianella which are less frequented. All in all a great place and we had an unforgettable stay. Really nothing to complain about.
A short summer break

Nice plce, located in a strategic position betweentalamone and albinia. The location allows to reach any of the sorrou dings within reasonable time. The staff was extremly nice and the swimming pool with salted water was extremly pleasant. A perfect place for a proper escape. Food from the reataurant was delicious... The seafood carbonara a new must for us. thank you all and thank you to claudio the owner. Ale and angelo
