Ten members of the Mediterranean Society of America based in Richmond, VA toured the Bay of Naples area in May. The aptly named Hotel Gli Dei, Hotel of the Gods, in Pozzuoli on the western side of Naples was our base for the entire trip. The hotel has a spectacular location at the top of the caldera for the Phlegraean Fields. The entire area of the bay can be seen from the hotel including the islands of Capri and Ischia. Everyone in the group had sea view rooms with balconies to be able to take advantage of the location. The hotel is small and family run and we got to know the staff as we were in the hotel for two weeks. It is also a popular place for “matrimonio magico”. As May is the month for weddings in Italy, there was a wedding almost every day we were at the hotel. It was fun to see the beautiful brides and stylishly dressed guests. One of the hotel staff was married during our stay and he introduced us to his bride. We found out that fireworks are a traditional end to a Neapolitan wedding and we witnessed many displays on both sides of the bay during our trip. I highly recommend this hotel for its location and the friendly staff.

The hotel is OKish, but it needs a lot of improvments in the bathrooms and room furniture. Everything is old, and sometimes degraded.
The view is very nice.
The breakfast is very rich in good/tasteful sweets, but when it comes to actual food, there is no variety at all: butter, scrambled eggs (and just that), one type of salami and one of ham, and tasteful yogurt.

I stayed 2 nights.The front of the hotel is lovely with lovely views.Unfortunately my room was at the back.To be accessed by leaving the main building.The room was probably luxury in the 80s but hasn't seen a lick of paint since.The walls were very dirty. On the whole the room was grubby and dated .The bedding however was very clean.I travelled with my son who had an appointment locally.My 2 days were spent alone, so I was hoping to do some walking and site seeing.There was no information in my room on the local area, all there was was a scrappy piece of paper with the menu.No TV info, nothing.I found the reception staff to be abrupt and unfriendly.It was also very noisy and difficult to sleep.Doors banging continually throughout the night.We could also hear other guests using the toilet!.All tea, coffee and water had to be ordered from the restaurant at a charge .There was a balcony with tables & chairs but the view of the back of the hotel wasn't nice, also there were lots of flies and mosquitoes out there.There was an insect net to use when the door was open but ours was broken.The restaurant staff however were helpful and nice.I did ask to be moved but there was a business convention there so no other rooms were available.

The view was just amazing, the cleanliness was immaculate and staff beyond helpful.
So a few details, the hotel is up on a hill and this gives a great view of bay, but this causes a few access issues and the hotel had an ad.hoc transport service that can help. So if you have a car that helps a lot.
It smells sometimes ! But don't blame the hotel, blame Mother Nature with the heated springs coming off south part of the volcano.
The food, for us was really good . . My Gnocchi was awesome. The big food area was a bit open in space but as it warms up you will have an amazing balcony view sitting outside.
We booked into a cheap room and the day after they moved us, on request to a nice sea view room . . Even helped us with the bags.
The hotel is a bit rough around the edges, i.e the rooftop in the picture on the website is not there anymore and it has a few knocks . . But it is as clean as a Swiss Lab. Also it's fully gated and very safe . . A bonus in Naples.
Lastly the staff . . Wonderful friendly waiter, same on reception and nothing was too much trouble.

I stayed for 3 days for a convention, the personnel were very polite and helpful. The hotel nothing out of the norm, I would give it 3 stars, not 4 and it is showing signs of age. Typical modern sterile furnishings. It was difficult to get to, but there is plenty of parking. Despite what the publicity photos show, it is not on the seacoast. Looking down from my room facing the Med you get a good view of a run down residential area, the coast is in the distance. Behind the hotel you have a view of the Autostrada. Cleanliness in the norm. A very small bar and no other services. Nothing within walking distance. The restaurant was very clean and the service was excellent, the wines were good but the food...terrible! Undercooked pasta, greasy fried seafood and everything else covered in in a pool of tasteless tomato sauce. Breakfast was OK. Will not return.
