The check in was easy, we could park our rental car there, and the room was good. It was about a 15 min walk to the town centre, up some stairs, but it was close enough, and close to the beaches.
The hotels in the town centre would not have had parking.
Tropea is a beach town, feels like a resort town, and is priced like it. For the location, La Pineta was good.

Friendly staff, easy-going atmosphere. Breakfast was pleasant and the coffee was fantastic. The room was kept clean and the surrounding area was very nice. The only good beaches in the entire region were near Tropea, and were about 5-8 minutes by foot from La Pineta. The rest of the Calabrian beaches we visited were covered with rubbish and cigarette stubs. Tropea is also the nicest of the Calabrian towns we visited. Would stay there again.

I stayed at Hotel La Pineta from 23-26 June 2014 in Room 4, booked on Booking.com (3 nights EUR142.50/single incl BF).
First, let me say this review is based on the fact I paid under EUR50 a night in pricey Tropea. Other hotels were in the EUR70-100 range which I could not afford so I had to, well, "adjust" my expectations. Considering what I paid, I was delighted. This is a good old Aussie/American 70's style beach motel just behind the marina and approx 1km walk from the train station. The rooms were large, really well maintained (no paint chips or scratched old furniture) and the towels and linen were really good quality. I was totally impressed by the maintenance of the property as I have been to Italy 10 times now and maintenance is never a strong point - they build new and let run down to wrack and ruin. The bed and pillows were really comfortable.
The breakfast was perfect for me fresh rolls and cornetti, ham, cheese, yoghurt, cornflakes, cake, donuts, fruit and coffee made to order. I didnt need any more.
As you have read, the main tourist area (Centro) of Tropea is UP on the hill. The area around the marina is a somewhat run-down residential area with a few old grocery shops, bars and restaurants and hence the rooms are half the price of staying on top of the hill in the fashionable tourist district. That said, you only have to walk a short 200m to the Municipio stairs (walk up approx 100 steps) up to the Old town and then walk another 150m and you are right in the thick of it, Corso Vittorio Emanuel. Not too far to walk in order to save 50% room rate ...
Also the beautiful FREE beach of Mare Piccolo (below the famous Church, Santa Maria dell'Isola) is only about 600m from the hotel. You can also walk 300m in the other direction to another free beach. There are literally a dozen private Lidos you can walk to if you want to pay EUR10 for 2 chairs and an umbrella ;-) I liked Lido La Roccette - close to the marina, it had a really nice beach bar for sunset cocktail hour ...
Truely, the only negative of La Pineta is its location. It is a long walk from the train station on a 35 degree day with 20kg of luggage. I arrived with small backpack and I only just survived the walk. If you have a big Samsonite, better you ask hotel to arrange taxi for you. There are no taxis waiting at the station as it is a small rural town with an unmanned train station.
If you are out all day and only sleep in your room, honestly, the location will not bother you so go for it and save the money for a nice dinner!! (I added some pics so you can see)

Spent the night in Tropea. What a quaint village! This hotel was clean, friendly, located close to the water and the marina. They have a restaurant with pretty good food. The place is 60's modern and is spacious and airy. It was a near astounding bargain as well. The old village of Tropea is way up on a hill overlooking the water. It is a bit of a hike up the stairs to the town but worth it. Lots of shops and activities. The train station is at the top of the hill. Should you choose to walk, go straight through the village and down the stairs. Otherwise take a taxi.

We weren't very well prepared for Tropea and got a bit spooked following Via Marina all the way down from the station, instead of going through to the old town and taking the stairs. The hotel is actually quite well located once you get there although it seems in the middle of nowhere, and was great value (we seemed to be there in the cheapest period). 5 minute walk to the beach, ten minutes to restaurants and everything else up the stairs, and while quite basic it's also very clean and friendly. No air conditioning though.
