We know full well that we are part of a coach party but we felt right from day one that we were treated as second class! This despite paying a very considerable sum and booking with a very high end tour company!
We were given very average food with little or no choice that led many in our party to complain via our tour manager to the hotel! Not only this the standard and speed of service leaves much to be desired!
The location is good from our lake view but thoroughly spoilt by letting all who want to who are not residents come in and use the facilities. No doubt making more money for the hotel but basicallytreating all residents as so they do not matter for either having priority to the facilities or just enjoying the beauty with peace and quiet!
And one more thing dogs are allowed in the restaurant - this should never be!
So be warned! Great location shame about respect for those who stay here!

Stayed here for 3 nights at the start of our tour of Italian lakes. Room clean and comfortable but overlooked road and rail line so no good view and a bit noisy. Reception staff excellent. Food very good. Lovely walk along lakeside. Would stay here again hopefully in room with lake view.

A lovely hotel sitting on the lakeside of Lake Orta in a beautiful peaceful location, with its own landing stage for small ferries to take you to Orta San Guilio and other parts of the lake. We had a very spacious room with balcony overlooking the lake which was perfect as Lake Orta has featured in my dreams for many years and this hotel and location did not disappoint. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the restaurants (separate for breakfast and dinner) were light and airy, the former overlooking the swimming pool and served a reasonable selection of food with four course dinners. We had live music on the first night in the restaurant which really got us into the holiday spirit. There are a couple of restaurants to walk to nearby, one being the campsite where we sat outside and had a delicious lunch on a table with a linen cloth and napkins! All in all a great place to stay to visit Orta and the Island of San Guilio, which is certainly not to be missed. We were only there for three nights as part of a tour but would definitely like to go back and stay for longer.

First the good. The location is stunning; directly onto the lake and with mountains all around. Reasonable sized grounds, very large swimming pool, direct access to lake(and some people did swim in lake which has crystal clear water). Only hotel with its own boat jetty for the local boats (you need this as it is really only way to get to other areas of the lake) . However boats are infrequent and if you miss the last one, which several people did, then you are stuck and have to pay for a taxi to get back to hotel. Rooms are reasonable size. Some people complained about size of bathroom, but I found them perfectly serviceable. How long are you going to spend in a bathroom ? Balconies are large. BUT only on lake side do you get a decent view. On the rear of the building you overlook a car park, a camp site and a very noisy road.
Now for the bad. The road is very near, very busy at times and very noisy when busy. If seated outside when dining, which sounds lovely, if you are put on left hand side you will be practically on the road. Dogs are allowed even in dining area so you can be troubled by dogs noise particularly if some of them don't get on.
Everything stops from the point of view of the residents if there is an outside party booked. You will find yourself moved around or told meal time has been changed to fit in with a wedding party that has booked the restaurant. For some reason the outside furniture, of which there is plenty, has no cushions which makes it quite uncomfortable to sit on. For a wedding party all the cushions miraculously appeared although this was no help to guests as it was all commandeered for the wedding party leaving guests with nothing to sit on. This was all returned the next morning but was again minus the cushions.
The breakfast is excellent and plentiful.
As a HB guest we found the menu quite restricted for a 4 star hotel but excellently cooked. I am on a restricted diet at the moment due to health problems and the hotel were very accommodating on this which was very helpful but I did not expect it. So a definite plus point.
It is possible to go for walks from the hotel along a lake-side walk(paved) but this only takes about 20 minutes at a slow amble. The road is dangerous to walk along as it is busy, fast and has no discernible pavement. It is possible to cross the main road and walk but this tends to be very steep.
There is a boat that runs to several other places on the lake but this only runs twice a day, so don't miss your return.
PLEASE note for some people this hotel will not be accessible. Only one lift to a few rooms all the rest use stairs so not suitable perhaps if you have limited mobility

In general, you do not read much about Lago d'Orta. Everyone talks about Lake Como and Bellagio. Let me tell you, our stay at this hotel was the absolute perfect start to our wonderful two-week vacation in Italy. Lake Orta is really a HIDDEN GEM. It's small, quiet, and has lots to experience. About L'Approdo: first class experience. This hotel has everything you need to make you happy. They go WAY out of their way to make your stay happy, comfortable,and quite memorable. Skip staying in Como people... this quiet lake is where it's at. Lots to see and do: a wonderful quiet pretty lake, an incredible medieval village, a great little island, and a memorable climb to a world heritage site to see 17th and 18th century incredible art dedicated to St. Francis.
Don't let the guide books fool you into Lake Como just because Clooney lives there. If you are looking for quiet and peaceful Italian Lakes Region life and history and essence, search no further. Check out Lago d'Orta.
Hotel l'Approdo is FIRST CLASS at helping you experience this. We absolutely loved it.
Drive up top of the hill to Madonna del Sasso for some spectacular views of the lake too! Take an easy day trip to Torino and visit that great city and the home of the Shroud of Turin.
