You cannot beat the location of this hotel! Only one block separates you from the old town and one block from the vibrant area of Getsemani.
The staff are very friendly and breakfast is very good (for a continental plus type of offering).
The rooms are large and basic. Rooms on the front have wonderful patios but the road noise is quite loud - we liked them though as you could see everything from your patio including the harbour and the walls of the old city. If you are Canadian (and maybe from elsewhere), make sure they don’t charge you room taxes or insurance costs.
There is an elevator so no lugging luggage up-stairs required. Make sure to take a hop-on hop-off bus that you can catch a few feet from your hotel.
Check out the next door park - you will find small monkeys in the trees.
If you have English, good luck getting help with any maintenance issues (such as battery changes so you can get into your room). As free wifi is included, my handy translation app proved worthwhile.

This hotel is situated in front of the main square of Cartagena, with a breathtaking view from the bar.
The staff is very friendly and the accomodations are spacious clean and modern.
There's also a restaurant very fancy where they serve the breakfast, which you can order things that are not available in the buffet.
Definitely I found my place in Cartagena... won't even consider look for another hotel when I visit the city again.
The only thing that I have to say that they should get better is the prices at the bar that are far more expensive than in the rest of the city.

Great service and quiet room if you are on inside courtyard. Close to old city and gethsemani - as well as closest traditional spot to the well appointed convention center. Thanks to Mandy for taking care of me and my science girls!

I had a 3rd floor, front of the building room and thoroughly enjoyed it as I was attending a conference at the convention center that is just across the street and 5 min away. Room had a nice view of old town also a 5 min walk and a small park Parque del Centenario also across the street. I found the rooms to be spacious and the wifi access excellent. A rooftop bar and restaurant was the best way to watch the sunset and unwind at the end of the day. A ground floor restaurant provided quality food for a slightly inflated price but that is understandable (still a fine meal with a drink or two for $20 or so). Desk and wait staff all spoke reasonably good English and tolerated my poor Spanish! Location near the convention and old town made it easy to catch a cab with the cost of about $5 or 6 US for a ride to the airport. Hotel has a colonial, old town decor. A couple of comments mention a salsa bar next door and the music is audible until late into the night and during daylight hours the sounds of street traffic are also heard. My room (302) was closest to each of these but I enjoyed these sounds. Other rooms in the hotel would undoubtedly be more quiet if that is what you are looking for however I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and the flavor of Cartagena that the Hotel Monterrey provided.

You stay at this hotel for one reason, the prime location right outside of the Old City without having to pay the obscene prices of the Old City. The rooms were clean, but there was definitely a weird smell coming out of the bathroom. Breakfast was included and it was actually decent. It's a great budget option but if you're looking for something a little more luxurious, this definitely is not it. Also, not much English spoken at the hotel which is a little disappointing given how many international travelers visit Cartagena.
