fab beach

This hotel is for someone who wants to get away from everything and just relax because there is pretty much nothing else to do apart from going to the beach. It is not near anything. A let down though, was that staff were not properly trained and were often not helpful.
Budget hotel with nice rooms
alice_on_the_go on 24/03/2014 20:15
The hotel is located in the centre of the city, is quiet and not expensive. The rooms are more than ok. Staff does not speak a good english though and check-in and check-out are very slow. There was a problem with the washbasin, it was leaking and water was almost everywhere on the bathroom floor. However I recommend this place.

1 Star Experience, But Could Be a 3 Someday

I will start this review by saying that this hotel did a lot of things right. This hotel, with proper management could become a decent 3 star hotel, but it is going to require some major work.
My wife and I came from the Park Hyatt Maldives, obviously a 5 star resort that would have no comparison to this city hotel. We have been on the road for 3 months now of a year traveling around the world, and have stayed in everything from 5 star hotels to budget 1-2 star properties. From the Pallazo, we did not expect luxury at all, but simply a functioning hotel in Male.
One of the things they did right was our arrival. We were greeted at the airport by a representative and taken from the airport to the hotel by ferry and taxi. The process was simple, fairly professional and we thought it was well coordinated. After our 2 day exploration of Male, I would say the hotel is in a much better part of town verses others, but there isn't really an ideal part of Male in our opinion. Nothing special at all about location. Anyway, we arrived at the hotel and were quickly checked in with staff standing by to help with luggage.
This is where things went down hill. Our room was on the 3rd actual floor up narrow stairs (no complaint for us). The room definitely had the lingering of smoke 24/7, which wasn’t what we had hoped for. The whole hotel had it. At times, it seemed like someone may have been smoking in the hallway because the smell would thicken and then get a little better. The whole hotel had a strange smoky, almost moldy smell in the hallways.
Our room upon arrival had major issues. The TV was not working, though later the staff got things connected right. The internet was down, and again the staff worked for a few minutes to get things working. The toilet was broken, and remained broken for most of our stay. We had to manually refill the toilet with water to flush it. The sink was the worst… we were washing our hands after arrival and all of a sudden water was leaking everywhere on the floor. The sink’s drainage was broken and leaking all over the bathroom. These issues are very basic issues. We don’t expect luxury, but we expect a working toilet, sink, internet if advertized and TV. The bathroom was not clean upon our arrival as well… pieces of floss were in the toilet from the last guest who was here.
There was no housekeeping during our 2 night stay. There was no soap, no shampoo, no toilet paper, only 1 large towel… missing basic things that are expected. Some furnishings like the TV, are very nice and modern, while others we laugh at. Why have such a nice TV when the rug for example is so terrible?
As for the staff, they seemed genuinely nice... I almost felt bad the first day having to ask them about the toilet, and the internet, and the TV. No matter how nice the staff is at any hotel, you just shouldn’t do some of the things that they were doing though. We were woken up at 8 in the morning with a call saying they had breakfast to deliver. They called our room at just shy of 11 PM to ask us what time we wanted to go the airport the next day. Over the phone, the hotel worker seemed unprofessional in manner.
Overall, in over 100 days on the road now, this is the worst hotel we have stayed at. Changes could be done to make us stay here again, but this is far from an adequate hotel. My wife and I love to try and give hotels our ratings by US standards anytime we stay at a hotel. This hotel we gave a 1 star. You have to have a working bathroom first before we would give you anything better.
