Needs to decide what kind of hotel it wants to be

I stayed here last year and the hotel was OK. I understood that they had done renovations since then. I was a little taken aback to see that the renovations were not so successful IMHO. They have opened the restaurant & bar area into the lobby. Not sure that works. The bar area has a lot of toys now, and that's kind of fun, but it closed at 11:00!!! C'mon, this is LA, not Ames, Iowa.Breakfast is more like a grab-n-go now and felt like a Holiday Inn Express. The rooms didn't seem that much nicer. I'm not sure i would spend the money again. That said, the personnel couldn't be nicer.

Somewhat disappointed

Yvonne M on 10/11/2017 01:09

This hotel is more expensive than the places where I usually stay, so I expected more comfort, more perks. It was just the opposite. The hotel is decorated in highly modern style, with lots of polished stainless steel, black and white décor, industrial looking decorations. Clean, attractive. Unfortunately I found it overall less functional than more budget-friendly places. To begin with, the room had two double beds instead of two queens, which I thought was pretty standard. I expected a nice comforter, but got just a bedsheet and a thin blanket. There was another similar blanket in the closet, but I considered it the bare minimum, not anything even approaching comfort, let's not even talk about luxury. 3 pillows per bed. Next, I discovered there was no computer desk. I thought that was also a standard feature in all hotels, but not in this one. There is a large counter built over a small dresser and refrigerator, and a bar-style chair with a foot rest that can be used with the counter to improvise a desk, as long as you don't need to be writing or checking some paperwork while you are using your computer. There just isn't enough space for any kind of notebook, papers, etc. No table. There is a lounge chair with an ottoman and a light by the window, if you want to read. Otherwise, to work, you would probably have to go to the lobby. Wireless internet connection worked fine. I gave up on working because unless I wanted to work in the bathroom, there was not enough light. The lamps available function more as décor and mood lighting, not for working. There were some snack items and beverages on the counter, and the refrigerator was stacked with beverages such as wine, soda, and probably alcohol (I didn't check it all that closely). Fortunately a price list was included, so I knew what I would be charged if I used any of those supplies. I am used to seeing a coffee maker with complimentary coffee packets in just about every place I ever stayed in. No coffee maker here. There was bottled water, usually complimentary, here I would be charged. The one nice thing that came with the room were the soap and lotion, very nice smelling. Instead of the small one-time-use bottles of shampoo and conditioner there were large pump-style containers in the shower/bathtub that had shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. All very nice, and you don't have to worry that you will not have enough. Nice towels, rubber mat for the bathtub - very appreciated, since it's easy to slip while showering. I don't take baths but I didn't see a mechanism for closing the drain on the tub. All the fixtures were very modern so maybe I just didn't know how the faucet operated. The room comes with two bath robes which are great if you are under 150 lbs. or so. I am a women's size XL and had a gap of about 8" in front when I tried to wear it, so it's for thin/small people only (although my robe said it was a "L"). There is also a yoga mat in the closet, which I did use when I ended up doing some work on the floor of the bathroom, since that was the only place where I had enough light. And there is a safe, always nice to have. Our window overlooked Wilshire Blvd, we were high up, on the 11th floor I think. Nice views. It was quiet, no noise of any kind. TV worked fine, as did the A/C.
We ate dinner and breakfast in the downstairs restaurant called Double Take. Unless you want to drive there is nothing else nearby but the restaurant was quite good. One of us had a flatiron steak, the other salmon with quinoa. I would recommend both, they have a good chef. In the morning there is complimentary coffee downstairs, very good coffee. You can also have breakfast, there is a breakfast menu. Valet parking, very friendly staff there.

UCLA visit

Jim S on 09/11/2017 23:14

My family and I stayed here on a visit to UCLA for a possible college next year. While the hotel was beautiful the room was tiny and our whole floor had a strong smell off marijuana. Once in the room the smell was gone. Location of the hotel was great and they did offer me another stay to compensate me. I will use that stay at a future date. Jim

Great Hotel w Superior Customer Service

BiotechWanderlust on 07/11/2017 15:10

The Hotel Palomar proved again that Kimptons are consistently excellent in terms of both accommodations and customer service. My second time staying in this particular hotel, the exceptional experience began as soon as I walked through the door and was pleasantly greeted at the entrance and then at the front desk by Cam Hoffarth. Cam went out of his way to see that me and my group were well taken care of and we were made to feel like we were the most important guests. That goes a long way when you spend this much time on the road. More than a few kind words and a thoughtful and complimentary upgrade demonstrated that Mr. Hoffarth has a bright future in the hospitality business. Well done Cam and thank you once again Kimpton for just being you.

Outstanding Staff

stewdebra on 06/11/2017 06:14

From the Valet to the Front Desk I was realIy impressed with how Friendly and Efficient the staff was. I was there for a 1 day staycation with a Family member for her Birthday. The Suite exceeded our expectations and the price was well worth it. It was nicely decorated and very clean. I will be returning. Kimpton Palomar you made by stay... a stay to remember. THANKS!
