What People are saying

Exceptional

Penfold555 on 25/10/2017 14:53

Exceptional service - despite the language barriers.

Room was one of the best I have ever stayed in. The in room onsen was amazing.

Some construction next door. Didn't bother us too much.

Beppu's hay day has passed. But it's still A significant area of geothermal activity. See the red and sea springs, steam your lunch, have a sand bath, and go to toyotsune for tempura dinner. A great day.

Then return to the hotel and that amazing onsen.

Amazing stay

Beach front luxury! Room and beds were so spacious. The surprise was having our own onsen in our bathroom, which we didn't know when we booked. The roof top onsen has a nice view, though the water temp was not as warm was I expected. There was a massage chair there as well as free tea. Absolutely loved our stay there.

Great place to stay for an upscale experience.

I had been traveling in Japan with a large group for more than a week and needed a night to myself. Hotel Umine was the perfect place and I could not be happier I found this quiet place to relax after 10 or so days of constant travel and sight-seeing. As a disclaimer, I decided to have my meals in my room, so I cannot speak to the hotel restaurant service, and only stayed for one night.

While I didn't get a hotel room on the top floor, I was one floor below, I did get a beautiful corner room with an ocean view. My room came with its own onsen which overlooked the ocean and was a perfect way to decompress after traveling around in a large group for several days. The room was very clean and spacious. You also receive a set of socks, slippers and a yukata in your hotel room. These were very high quality items, not the cheaper versions I got in other hotels.

My hotel stay came with dinner and breakfast. I had the kaiseki dinner which is a multi-course dinner that was served in my room. The waiter came in and served each course, explained what I was about to eat and then left the room so I could eat, only to arrive (with impeccable timing) once I was done to serve the next course. Each course was small, but I was very full before dinner was finished While this wasn't the best meal I had in Japan, the service was superb, and definitely in the top 5. Breakfast was very traditional but very filling, I wasn't able to finish all the food and wasn't hungry until very late in the afternoon.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for either couples looking for a romantic getaway, or someone looking for a quiet hotel with a professional staff and privacy.

Slight drop in overall experience

Beware there's construction this round opposite which spoils soaking experience and sea view. Breakfast has tofu which needs to be shared despite small portion. Also didn't check if prefer coffee or tea so had coffee consecutively. Room amenities are great as before and they gladly replace beer with tea and soft drinks. Need to call out to service staff to help with luggage. Remember to take umbrella when going out in case it rains during winter.

Nice all rounded onsen hotel

It looked totally nondescript from the outside. Plain old looking facade. However, the inside was a pleasant surprise. It looks recently renovated with a bright and clean interior. Very spacious. Our room had an entrance foyer, followed by living area, sleeping area with an attached private hot spring bath. We traveled as a family of four and found the space more than adequate. The private bath looked out to the sea. Water in the bath had some deposits but was clear. There is also an open air public bath on the roof top. There were no other users when I went there with my daughter. Very cold in winter but still a pleasant experience.

Staff were friendly and one of them, Ika was a foreigner who spoke fluent English. I called the hotel last minute to tell them that some of my family members didn't take beef. I believe they had already prepared our meals but managed to change it to lobster instead! They served teppanyaki which was delicious. We drove to the hotel and it wasn't a problem locating it with the GPS. It was also near the 8 hells and African Safari which we visited during our trip to Beppu. I would say it was my favourite onsen stay of the 3 I visited on this trip to Kyushu. Highly recommended!
