Hidden gem

Two couples stayed 23/26Jun17. Surrounded by beautiful gardens. (with a funny little mobile lawn mower moving around all week-end). Lovely place, clean and charming atmosphere. Short on staff but that did not spoil our great week-end. Would give more than 2 stars but some improvements could be introduced. No evening bar or space outside for a couple to relax ( I mean welcoming benches, etc) Mini bar only offered small bottle free water & coca-cola. Excellent breakfast with scrambled eggs/bacon, several types of freshly made bread, croissants, pastries, cold meats, types of cheese, smoked salmon, fresh fruit salad, etc, etc, etc TV could do with BBC news channel.

Beautiful grounds/needs some TLC

Natalie R on 13/09/2016 17:12

Just returned from a weekend in Bruges. It's our second time in Bruges which we adore but first time at This B&B. We only stayed here because the other B&B around the corner of our choice was fully booked, but looked lovely.
Upon arrival, you are greeted with electric gates and absoloutly stunning grounds. Horses all around which I love and looking at the house, it's a dream, and very quaint. On arrival 10/10. Unfortunately, upon entering the house, it had a very stale smell, which I thought was because it was 'oldy woldy' but actually it was stale cigarette smoke. The lady smoked inside the place so being a non smoker, that wasn't great. The place was very beautiful and a lot of character but really needed some TLC. Carpets were grubby and blankets on the bed were old and torn. Also my bath towels were clean but smelt of smoke. The decor defenatly could do with updating. Such a shame for what could be a stunning place. All this aside, I think the biggest let down was the host! She barely spoke to us, and at times quite rude and abrupt. Defenatly not friendly. I asked if she had an iron I could perhaps use and she just said 'No'. Not 'no, sorry' or perhaps yes certainly, would have been better Everything seemed a bit too much trouble. It felt, as long as we paid for the night, she said hello gave us breakfast and goodbye then her job was done. Bit of a shame as would be nice to feel a bit more welcome. At breakfast, we were not offered any eggs, salmon or bacon. Was just continental already put out which was very tasty and fresh I have to say. But again, not once checked on us to see if we or the other guests needed anything,' was everything ok?' Customer service goes a long way, and I'm afraid to say I wouldn't stay back here again just for that reason.
Around the corner is Loverlijj...a B&B we stayed at last year. The place is so beautiful and shabby chic and the lady Liz is literally so nice and can't do enough for you. Next time I will be going back there.
Overall this place is a lottery winning place on the outside, and for that I
Loved it, but on the inside not so great. I hope the lady improves her customer service for future guests and make them feel a little more welcome.

Nice quiet location away from main town

Very well maintained hotel , in a rural location beside the canal, easy bike ride to the main Bruges attractions, large comfy rooms, pretty breakfast room with a nice continental breakfast. This would make a good bike touring base. Bikes can be hired here.

Dissappointing hostess, shame as hotel could 'potentially' be lovely

Flowers2209 on 05/10/2014 20:03

On route on day of arrival had several missed calls from an agitated hostess at hotel. We called back as soon as we could, she asked when would we be arriving as she had an appointment, we then felt under pressure to go directly there even though when booking told could arrive between 2-8pm and we now had to arrive by 6. On arrival she hastily showed us our room, gave us key and promptly left, subsequently we went out for dinner soon after and found her drinking with friends down road at bar. Next day at breakfast had fruit, ham, cheese, jam with mini croissant but no bread, unable to make most of breakfast as bread main component, didn't like to ask as thought this may be Belgium custom, on exit noticed basket of bread in kitchen but hostess nowhere to be seen then. Following day she arrived at breakfast table with bread and we very politely mentioned that we had not had bread the previous day and unable to make use of all breakfast as no bread, she responded in dismissive manner and said 'everyone has bread' and rudely walk away with no apology. When paying bill we still very politely asked if she could make a small concession for the lack of bread as we were not able to make use of the full breakfast and she replied that she would call the police and that she had another appointment and could we just pay the bill, all in a very rude manner. We paid the bill in full. We would not return to this hotel as we felt her behaviour was shocking! We are a middle aged, respectable couple and did not expect treatment like this. This is a shame as the hotel could be lovely with different hostess. Smell of cigarette smoke in hotel too.

A calm Oasis to stay at

Croxy54 on 15/09/2014 17:27

We have just returned from our third stay at the Wilgenhof. Situated about a mile outside the Brugge ring road it is an oasis of calm and quiet. There are only 6 bedrooms, each different and all having everything you require from a hotel room. breakfast is a simple affair but fresh fruit and fresh bread are always in evidence as well as Ham, cheeses and smoked salmon! We usually park at the main car-park at the railway station. Currently a maximum of 3.5euros for up to 24 hours and then stroll down the avenue to Minne water and into town that way. So many places to choose from to eat and drink whatever your taste or budget, and chocolate shops by the dozen. The family run Wilgenhof Hotel makes an ideal base to explore northern Belgium as well. I'm sure that we will return.
