We stayed 3 nights in the hotel. Our room was large (especially for France) and well appointed. The location is right in the center of town and parking was no problem in a public lot close by. The restaurant was very good for dinner and breakfast was average. Bruno, the manager, spoke excellent English and was extremely helpful and informative and called several wineries to arrange for our visits. Really a fine experience in this lovely town.
Fabulous 1 nite stay

We arrived soaking wet on our motorbike after a major thunder storm in the Pyrennees. The staff were so gracious and helpful, even managing to garage our bike for us. After a very hot bath in a luxury Art Deco bathroom, we headed out to explore the town itself. Wonderful place. Returned to the hotel for dinner, it was a magical meal, set off by a perfect bottle of local wine.
A fabulous stop over.
Its kind of weird!

You couldn't ask for a more central location which has both plusses and minuses!
The plus includes being able to walk everywhere easily, the minus that the drunks are quite noisy. We were promised "air conditioning" - this was in fact a stand up fan so it was pretty hot. I think it has got stuck in the era and everything is a bit ancienne.
The worst night of my life

During our grand tour this year we picked Auch as a stop over between Port Leucate and the west coast (bad idea)
We found the hotel situated in a beautiful location on a square in the old centre easily- parking in front of the hotel for unloading luggage was convenient and long term parking 50yards around the corner free and handy- directed by a lovely bi-lingual receptionistl.
Having surveyed the on the doorstep eating options we decided on the hotel brasserie plat du jour 2/5.
In the evening after our previous hotel dining experience we decided to spread out a few euros and give local brasserie a chance. Duck breast lovely- omelette super ,then returned to the hotel at approx 10pm.
The nightmare began! Room19 is apparently situated opposite a local drum loving, mega bass owning insomniac. Dum dum dum,dum dum dum,dum dum dum,dum dum dum!Relief the sound decreases at 11pm by 10Db.
Dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum. Heaven! 12:15am silence.
Why can't I sleep toss/turn, toss/turn, toss/turn. Then I realise the hotel de France is the only hotel in France we have stopped in that deems a duvet necessary in mid July- in duvet sweat cobs- out freeze in breeze from fan supplied! Duvet discarded cover- a light spiders web of linen employed!
Nodding off bliss then dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum the party restarts.
Dum dum dum,dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum,
3:15am patience exhausted dial 211 nobody speaks English !
Exasperated endure dum dum dum
Dum dum dum,dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum. Finally 03:40am silence!
Sleep- but not as you know it- BE AWARE the hotel de France is clothed at the rear with a picturesque blanket of ivy.
During our struggles with the budding DJ neighbour of course first move close blinds and windows- not possible! So much ivy in the blind closures bathroom secured with an effort bedroom blinds impossible. Both window closures so antiquated they undo when fastened.
My partner (lumpy) woke at 9am with a fine crop of mosquito bites some in places too personal to mention.
Hotel de France - earmuffs an essential ,fly killer essential ,mosquito repellent essential!
We checked out at 9:30am and tried to tell the lovely lady in reception our trials but unfortunately she did not speak good English (funny she recognised drums) paid the bill and will not be back!
