So we just got back from a wk with family and had a great time! There were definitely some good and bad points. I'll start with the good stuff..first my husband is in a wheelchair and the accessibility was great here lots of ramps to get you where you needed to be. It is a very large property so if you tire quickly this is not the resort for you. They do have golf carts that will take you around although for us it's more work to transfer on it. The room was spacious enough to get around comfortably although the bathroom set up was a bit challenging because of how the grab bars and toilet placement were. The beach was gorgeous and cocktail waitresses were frequent! There is a boardwalk which made it easy to get there with a wheelchair, that being said the sand here is very soft which makes getting on it difficult with a chair. We had chairs close to the walkway so no worries. Our room was always cleaned twice a day and they did a great job! The grounds are beautiful and are expansive to say the least. The entertainment staff seemed to keep things lively and involve people. Our concierge was always so kind and as helpful as possible. Also the pallela on the beach ...amazing one of the best meals as well as the street tacos at the mall.
Now a few not great points food is not wonderful the better restaurants were the marina seafood and the Japanese steakhouse....the ranchero steakhouse, jambalaya and el tapatio Mexican were awful. Food was over cooked service was ok and the wait was ridiculous we waited over an hr for food multiple nights although not a full restaurant. They seem to be trying to make things "gourmet" But have trouble with the basics.
The shower bench ,which was just a typical bench, broke as my husband was getting off of it and the replacement was literally a step stool. And just so you know he is not a huge guy 6'2 and 200lbs. So we improvised by using a chair from the patio as they had nothing else available.

So I think this resort could be great with some attention to detail and food improvements but right now I would say it's average.

We traveled with 6 adults and 3 kids. The resort is beautiful, very very clean! We were greeted with a delicious welcome drink of cucumber lemonade water...Rooms are gorgeous and spacious. Staff is extremely pleasant and they work very hard!! Resort is huge and takes some time to get from here to there. The beach was about 8-10 min walk away. There are tons of pools everywhere, wave pool and lazy river is a unique part of the resort. They had a foam party in the main pool the first day we got there which was a fun kick off to the vacation. Housekeeping was great and always provides quick clean service. The pirate ship pool was fun for even the adults, the Vegas show we saw was very entertaining. The buffet food was just ok and had the same stuff every night but the steakhouse was very delicious. Drinks were yummy but barely contained alcohol unless you asked for extra. Or unless you took shots of tequila!! The pool area flooring is very slippery! My mom fell and broke her toe but there were lots of caution signs to ensure you were cautious while walking. We were in bed early every night but only because we were at the beach or pool all day. Drink ladies were very constant at the pool and beach so that was good! The resort has some stray cats and local Coati ( raccoon looking animals) but they weren't a bother. All in all it was a beautiful resort with hard working staff. I still have my wristband on a week later because I want to back. Great family vacation.

Staff is very friendly.
Pool bar is understaffed
Beach chairs are hard to come by
Pool chairs are hard to come by
Towels are treasured items. also need more places to exchange towels.
Pools are nice but need a bar on the lazy river.
Several good historical sites to visit
Playla Carmen is a fun trip with reasonable cab rates.
Taco Bar at the shopping center is the best food
The espresso drinks are good
The omelettes in the morning are a good choice.
Most of the food is just not good.

Family Vacation 2017

I have mixed feelings regarding this Iberostar property. I must have read hundreds of reviews before taking the plunge and deciding to stay at the Paraiso Maya. I was skeptical based on the reviews. For perspective, my husband and I are in our late 20’s and traveled with our two boys who are 8 and 12.This was our first time staying in the Rivera Maya area. We have previously only stayed in the Cancun hotel zone. We stayed in a junior suite at the Maya for 7 nights. Yes it is true. The grounds are huge! The property is home to 5 resorts and is meticulously maintained. Everything is very lush and beautiful. I will start with the great.
Great: The staff was great. We were always greeted by all staff we came across. The bartenders and housekeeping staff made our stay much more pleasant. We even had an incident where we had to switch rooms because our electronic lock stopped working and we couldn’t get into the room. The concierge and resort security worked diligently to get our room open so that we could collect our belonging and go to a different room. The hotel is immaculately clean including the lobby, rooms, and restaurants. The pools were awesome. We met an awesome family from Wisconsin! 30 minutes from the airport. They have a small taco joint at the shopping center that is AMAZING. There is wildlife everywhere. They have a doctor in a small clinic just next to the lobby. We had to visit the DR because my son came down with a terrible cough and congestion. The cost FYI was a cool $129 USD.

Good: The drinks were meh. Very inconsistent with the drinks, this was a disappointment. The lobby bar however the exception and was always very good. We ended most of our nights here or at the pool table. The Japanese restaurant and the Steak house were good considering the other food options. The coffe shop in the lobby was a go to every morning although my husband preferred the coffee maker coffee in our room. Oh, and the room service food was okay too! 24hrs ! I love room service, makes me feel fancy. The beach was good and drink service was consistent. The sports bar was a good place to relax after the nightly entertainment. The nightly entertainment gave us something to do every night.

Not so good: The food. (palms face) The food hands down was probably the worst of any resort I have ever stayed at.(Dinner food specifically) I knew going into this that the food was not great based on the reviews but ignored it because we are not picky eaters. Ill literally eat just about anything but this was quite bad. You have to make dinner reservations for the al la carte restaurants and we missed 3 of the reservations, it was hard for us to dictate our day based on being able to get back to the room and shower on time to get to such dinner reservation. So we would opt for the dinner buffet which progressively got worse every night. We did manage to make it to the “Cajun” restaurant but wished we hadn’t. I ordered jambalaya which was basically shrimp with Spanish rice and chunks of hot dog just to paint a picture. We also decided on the Maya because of the wave pool and lazy river but those were pretty lame and we spent almost no time there. They are although great for families with small children. The beach chair situation is terrible if you do not get out there early enough to reserve your chairs you have to wait until late afternoon to get a decent spot. The walk to get to anywhere was annoying but apparently there are golf carts that can transport you. There are no ocean view rooms and the walk to the beach is 8-10 minutes. After the entertainment that ends between 10-11 there is not much to do.
Overall the place is a solid 3.5 in my opinion. There were just too many little things that added up that hindered our experience which is a shame because the people that are employed here work very hard and are very pleasant. They get a 5!! I just do not think this is worth the money and can not get over that. Based on my experience there are just too many competitors in the same price point that offer more. We will most likely not return.Bummer.

50th Anniversary Celebration

Iberostar Paraiso Maya June 3-10, 2017

Our trip was organized by Berwick Travel with Steve Umstead as our agent. All aspects of flight, ground transportation and hotel accommodations were above and beyond expectations!
We explained to him that this was to be a celebration of my husband and my 50th wedding anniversary with our kids and grandkids. With the ages of the six grandkids from 15 down to 1, we’d need something for everyone. We had one thing in common, though - the beach!

We were picked up at the Cancun Airport by Lomas Travel. They met us with a sign with our name on it, had the two carseats we had requested and some gifts from the Travel Agency. An easy trip from the airport to the resort.

The Paraiso Maya was absolutely awesome! The check-in was handled very professionally. It took a fair amount of time, but with the size of our group that was to be expected. There was more than enough staff to get us checked in, bags taken care of and delivered to our rooms. We were in Building 61 which was an ideal location. We were close to the beach, the pool and two of the major restaurants. That was especially handy for the breakfast buffets. We had a Standard Junior Suite on the first floor room. The other two families each had Family Junior Suites directly above us. The Family Junior Suites had two adjoining rooms, one with a King-sized bed and one with two queen beds. Both rooms also had pull-out couches. These were great as there were enough beds and baths for 4 adults, 3 teenagers and 3 toddlers!

The mini-bar was stocked with beer, water and sodas. There was a bottle of wine also, and a cheese and fruit tray was delivered to us shortly after arrival. We loved the towel animals and the way Hermalinda, our housekeeper, shaped the sheer drapes into a butterfly.

The kids loved the Pirate Pool (don’t know if that’s the official name, but it did look like a pirate ship), the lazy river, wave pool, the balloon animals, the real animals - Coati, Peacocks, Iguanas, and raccoons. We joked about having Coati burgers at the Beach Buffet. We also enjoyed the ice cream at both the Beach buffet and by the pool.

The adults also enjoyed the pools, animals and the great bar service at the Beach Bar and the ones by the pools. Bar service in the restaurants was also excellent - wine flowed freely!
Some also went to the Mall, gym, specialty coffee shops and gift shops. All were really great!
One couple also went to Mass on Sunday at the chapel. I understand there is also a Protestant service.

We went to some of the shows, and had a great time at all of them. Our teenagers really enjoyed the Magic Show. The Pirate Show was fun for the little ones, too.

We found the Wifi to be good. It worked on the beach, as well. We used it a lot to communicate with each other by text. A couple of times they were slow going through, but generally good.

Steve made the following reservations for us at the Specialty Restaurants:

6/03 Steak House El Rancho 7:00 pm
6/04 Mexicano Tapatio 7:00 pm
6/05 Japones La Geisha 7:00 pm
6/06 Seafood La Marina 7:00 pm
6/07 Cajun Jambalaya 7:00 pm
6/08 Fogon Italiano 7:00 pm
6/09 Steak House El Rancho 7:00 pm

The only thing we changed was Friday night. We had such a great time at La Geisha on Tuesday, that we went there again on the last night. We also changed it to 6:30 so that we could make it to the Pirate Show for the little ones at 8:00.

We were told that the dress code for gentlemen is sleeved shirts, long pants and closed toe shoes in all the specialty restaurants. That did not seem to be the case, though. Most men had on bermuda length shorts and sandals. Their website also says casual is ok except for the French restaurant.

Although there were many people at the resort, we never had a problem getting chairs by the beach or the pool. It may not be the exact location you want, but always had chairs. People seemed to come and go so you could move if you desired.

The rooms, the grounds, the restaurants, buildings, restrooms, etc were all be immaculate. Staff were constantly cleaning, painting, and generally “detailing” the facilities. There was almost to litter probably due to the fact that the dishes were glass in the restaurants and plastic near the pools and on the beach. Almost no paper products were used.

Everything about our trip was excellent - the service, the facility, the staff. Have to give it a 5 star - thanks, Steve.
