Budget Hotel or What

This is a Budget Hotel but not I thought a budget price. I paid more than I expected. I do use budget hotels of this standard in France, with a different hotel group but generally pay less. The building sound proofing is not very good and I was disturbed by a noisy child and other nocturnal noises. If arriving late look hard for the out of hours check in point, it is not well signed or illuminated. The print-out I got from this machine indicated that I was in room 9 however the card key indicated room 3, I slept in room 3.
On the positive side and very important to me, the bedroom, bathroom and bed linen were absolutely spotless and the staff very pleasant very polite and very efficient. Although the breakfast was pretty standard fair, there was plenty, so no excuse to leave hungry. On balance, not a bad experience but with a few adjustments could be fair value for money.
Does the job

We were booked into this hotel by our breakdown service as emergency accomodation. The staff were helpful and we had two adjoining rooms for us and our 2 teenagers. Beds were comfortable, rooms clean, showers hot and water pressure good. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it looked pleasant and had an interesting menu 11 euro for menu du jour. There is an interesting Chinese restaurant - buffet style - next door and an Intermarche across the road for bits and pieces. It is a utilitarian place, fine for a one night stop over if needs be - the WiFi was pretty good when we were there.
Cost effective but a bit like a prison

For the price it is not bad but the hotel is woefully understaffed and the rooms have shutters on the window which you would not risk leaving open over night. This means there is no natural light or air - hence the "prison" analogy.
Hotel is on the edge of Argentan near industrial parks so many guests are tradesmen as indicated by the preponderance of Les Camions Blanc (White Vans) in the Car park.
Nothing wrong with that of course but sleeping after about 6 am is impossible when they start to leave for work and door after door is slammed shut.
The breakfast was actually very good value - the fresh croissants one would expect etc. but we sat down for dinner the night before and after attempting to get a menu let alone drinks from the one waitress on duty for 30 minutes we decamped to the "all you can eat" Chinese buffet next door (which incidentally is not recommended).
Rooms were clean and the price was good but I would look for something a little less utilitarian in the future.
Unwelcoming dump

This place turned out to be more expensive than many places on our trip because I had to book two rooms for us and the kids most other places had sofa beds.
Arrived about 7 pm on a Friday and despite the posted times saying the front desk was open till 11 and the restaurant till 9 the place was locked up tight. We did not know what to do till my daughter saw around the side a box. It was a key dispensing box! Welcome! It did not work despite trying all the credit cards we had that we may had booked the reservation on. Finally at 15 minutes we got it to work. Welcome! It spit out the two keys and we went in. It was not a hotel at all but a repurposed college dorm I think. Sparse old furnishings etc. bathrooms were fairly vclean and the double bed doable but the twin birds were bad and one had broken slats.
There was opening window with electronic shutters to close so it was plenty dark. We just kept our shoes on the whole time In the rooms.
The am buffet was mostly store bought pastries and sweet booked cereal, not all the nice pars tries shown in the photos on this site. We passed and went to a local boulangerie. When we got back after a day out, both times restaurant and front desk closed despite posted opening times. We'lcome! The only time in 3 days we spoke to some one was at check out and even then they did not speak any English. Tough go if you speak no. Frenach. Luckily that wasn't a problem for us. But, my French isn't good enough to follow a tv show so don't worry about using the flat screen TV if you don't speak French as there were no English tv stations.
There were also some sketchy people hanging out in a van the whole time we were ther- not sure what they were going.
All in all skip this hotel and even the town - there is zero to do.
