Room Only. Didn't Eat at Restaurant.

This review is for the room only. We did not eat at the Michelin Star Restaurant. We stayed one night. Our party had been looking forward to staying at Ivan Vautier Hotel and eating at the Restaurant. The free parking on arrival was great. Staff at the front desk offered us a warm welcome. However it was apparent from the moment we arrived the hotel was preparing for a fair sized private event. There was a great deal of movement of furniture happening around us. After watching the activity for a while, and asking a member of staff what was happening, we made the difficult choice not to eat at the restaurant as we were uncertain how the private event, also eating, would impact on the dining experience. We were, and still are, incredibly disappointed we were not given the option prior to our stay of making an informed decision as to whether we wanted to complete our booking knowing the private event would definitely impact on our stay. We were not given this opportunity. In the hotel itself the rooms had some nice touches. Free robes and slippers in the bathroom etc. However for an establishment that lists itself as a 5 star hotel I expect more than average. There was no complimentary water in the mini bar for instance. I find this odd. Coffee facilities in the room were very disappointing, with sachets of a rather ordinary instant coffee the only choice. Also, had we wanted tea, which we didn't, there was a strange selection of just 3 rather ordinary branded tea bags, no two of which were the same. I also expect better than long life milk in a 5 star hotel. Especially when they have a mini bar and a Michelin star restaurant. Also, the shower door did not close properly in the bathroom, causing the floor to get wet and slippery. Finally some of the décor, especially paint work and the hallway did seem quite tired. It was not an unpleasant stay but in all honesty we were disappointed.
Bit of a disappointment

Stayed here as an overnight stop before getting the Ferry back to Portsmouth. On arrival we thought we would have a drink in the bar...........there was a wedding party about to arrive so the bar area wasn’t available and we sat in the reception area instead. We were advised that there was a table for dinner if we wanted but we decided that we would walk into town and find something more authentic. The atmosphere seemed a bit stilted and although I’m sure the Michelin restaurant would have been very nice having looked at the menu it was very expensive (obviously!) but more importantly there was nothing that really took our fancy anyway. Walk into town, approx 25mins and there is a pedestrian area with loads of good bars and restaurants.
The rooms in the hotel were very average, clean but quite dark and small and our room had a bath with only a hand held shower. Packets of instant coffee (yuk!) sparsely filled mini bar and one bottle of complimentary water. Our friends in the room just across the hall had a decent shower, full mini bar BUT no complimentary water. No consistency with housekeeping then!! Didn’t have breakfast so cannot comment on that but on the whole not over impressed with this hotel and wouldn’t recommend.

This is a small hotel with a friendly staff. The rooms reminded me of a bed and breakfast but they did provide bathrobes and slippers. Caen and this hotel provided a perfect location for visiting Normandy battlefields. Caen also has its' own history with William the Conqueror.
Fabulous hotel and exceptional restaurant

Friendly staff showed us to our beautiful room and the restaurant definitely deserves its Michelin star it was outstanding
Fantastic stay with use of spa facilities. Don't miss the restaurant as it's a dining experience to remember. Great attention to detail and lovely staff.
A bit of a drive out of town but well worth it.

We chose this hotel because it was easy to get to from the cross channel ferry and has free parking. Its main draw is the Michelin Star restaurant - which we didn't get to use, but in fact the hotel rooms are great. Very comfortable and quiet, super bathrooms. The staff are really helpful and breakfast reasonable value and of good quality. We stayed both ends of a trip to Paris, and would definitely return. It's about 30 mins walk to the centre of Caen.
