Lovely place
Caroline Yon 24/05/2017 14:41We visited this hotel as part of a 3 night hike on the Nakesendo. We didn't have high hopes after our first night on the trail found us in accommodation that was a bit too "mainstream" for our taste. Onyado tsutaya was completely different. The staff were eager to please and the hotel had a lovely homely feeling that made us feel welcome the minute we stepped inside. The food was delicious - offering traditional Japanese cuisine but with a nod to Western food too, ensuring that nobody would go hungry. The onsen was also lovely and peaceful. A very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Thank you!
Good food but dated facilities
emzbrzon 18/04/2017 20:56We've stayed at many ryokan in Japan now and did not find this one quite to the level normally expected in terms of quality of the facilities and service. The staff is friendly but service sometimes a bit rushed or chaotic. Some of the staff members were particularly kind and welcoming. The room and bath area really need fresh paint / paper and some updating. The meals were delicious and there is clearly a focus on making the dining room and lobby agreeable to be in and they were. They even offer a children's menu and our child enjoyed them.
The town is sweet, we loved the footbath and it was a good place to be based to visit Matsumoto and walk on the Nakasendo.
Great onsen, nice lobby but overall did not meet expectations
melanie son 11/04/2017 02:26Booked this through booking.com and it was not cheap but assumed that this was because it included dinner and breakfast, turned out my rate included neither ! The room itself was nice and spacious , the onsen was lovely. The check in staff was not particularly helpful (possibly because I was room only ?) , would have been good to know that the shuttle bus to the station requires a reservation the night before etc. Wifi only works in the lobby. Not many options for eating in the area at night.
2.5 Stars
JChengon 06/01/2017 13:30The dinners were good. The breakfasts ok. The staff in the dining room were friendly and cheerful.
But the rooms were dated and the bathrooms tiny. As they only provided one bath towel per guest and the the towel was fully depreciated, I requested an extra bath towel from the female duty manager Dec 28 afternoon, she demanded 500 yen for the extra towel. We declined.
If you must stay in Kiso-Fukushima, look harder at your ryokan options. Onyado is good for meals, not for the stay.
Note: For the walk from Magome to Tsumago, we shopped for our picnic supplies from AEON supermarket in town.
Great service, excellent food and ambiance
mclmgon 29/12/2016 12:54The hospitality of the people operating this establishment is the most endearing and memorable part of my stay, inspite of language and cultural barrier. Probably because I was alone in my trip, the staff took time to chat and explain everything to me (especially the food, which is one of the best I ever tasted in Japan). I was given a room with a view of Kiso River, which offered a picturesque winter scene when it suddenly snowed the next day (a rare occurrence in November). The management without hesitation, also extended a helping hand for me to get a pair of winter shoes to cope with the sudden change in weather. Rooms are immaculately clean and done in authentic traditional manner, which makes one's stay more warm and homey. Their onsen was the best way to cap my 7.7km walk along the Magume-Tsumago route of the Nakasendo trail. I almost never noticed that wifi is only available at the lobby, maybe because it made more sense to enjoy the experience and surroundings than to surf my time away in the internet (like what I'm doing at the moment).
