Very satisfied

Very satisfied with this accommodation. It was clean and comfortable. The staff were also very accommodating (especially Stephanie). Would give five stars if the WiFi was better - couldn't get it in the room so had to go down to the common area to use it.
The location is the only plus

The location was great as it was close to everything in cairns city. We stayed in the resort side, hardly a resort. Although this was a budget hotel I still would not pay to stay here again. The rooms were unclean, there was mold in the shower, the pillows were yellow and lumpy, there was a cockroach walking around in the room and it was really really noisy. I actually felt unsafe as this hotel also.
Prison

Myself and my boyfriend booked a dorm room here for 3 nights. I already knew it was a very budget hostel which didnt bother me as ive stayed in many hostels. However, this place was like an actual prison. The other person who was in the 4 bed dorm with us was extremely strange, we hardly slept worrying. In the morning i went down early to ask if they would refund the other 2 nights and was told no. So i asked if there was any chance we could move to a different room, all they could offer was the resort side of the property which would cost an additional 200 dollars! As we decided we would check out and lose the money as we felt that uncomfortable, the lady i assume to be the manager, was very disapproving and made me feel like a snob for choosing to do this but i felt far much better after we'd left. Maybe the look on her face would have been different if she had to stay in that dungeon.
Very budget accommodation

I stayed in Koala Beach Resort for a period of 12 nights in a one-bedroom apartment. Work had booked the accommodation. The resort itself is located centrally, conveniently close to Cairns mall and the restaurants and Esplanade, 10 mins from reef ferry terminal. Koala Beach Resort is divided into two sections, the left one is the backpackers and the right side is the resort. However the place isn't a resort, more of a budget motel.
I stayed on second floor in room 208. The room is fairly spacious with dates furniture. It was winter time, but rooms were rather warm. A kitchenette was provided with a sink and microwave and fridge and basic utensils. A very small TV (32"?) was in the lounge.
Bathroom had a spacious shower, which had a few mould residue. Bath towels were provided but there are stains and holes in the towels provided.
There is a double bed and single bed available, however only the double bed had a sheet set available. There is a air conditioner in the bedroom which makes the room nice and cool, but it is quite noisy.
The apartment has small bugs. There are limited parking inside the resort (only 6) so you need to park early. There are parking available after 5pm outside the place, but if you are planning to go out to the reef, make sure you get a park in the resort as parking outside is pay parking and max 3 hours. Also, the gates to the parking at the resort closes at 7pm and only opens after 8am. There is complimentary wifi, but I could never connect to it. The reception lady was lovely and gave me another possible wifi code but still couldn't detect on both my phone and laptop, which makes it inconvenient for my work.
There are washing machines, dryers and pools available. Lots of kids went into the pool.
Checking out was fairly straight forward. As I was checking out outside of office hours (at 5am), there is a key drop that allows you slip the key into a box.
Overall, the accommodation is budget, a few bugs, night time can be dodgy.
POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE

Stayed in the Hotel section, room itself wasn't too bad but could be better. For example there could be a bigger table to eat on even if it's mobile plus there's a lack of tea or coffee (there was a kettle, and a vending machine on the property and the supermarket is open till late should you need supplies). Bit annoying that reception is also closed between 12-2PM, having to wait with a roller bag for close to 90 minutes in town isn't ideal.
Couple of specifics to room 2 include the bedroom fan not working when switched to "2", and the switch in the bathroom/toilet power point also dangerously loose. WiFi free but not of great quality (ended up using my own pre-paid WiFi). TV in a positive picks up all the FTA channels unlike many other hotels who can't pick up the HD channels. Bed comfortable enough even if it's a little low, but the pillow slips may need replacing (looks stained)
