We were fortunate to find Hotel La Colombaia quite close to our date of travel after a villa booking that fell through. We are so glad it did!
We felt like film stars staying at an exclusive and secluded secret hideaway. Despite being August, many of the guests were passing through so didn't stay long, so our six days and nights at the Colombaia were largely spent as the only guests enjoying the facilities. And what great facilities they were!
The hotel has ten rooms so even at full capacity is not overcrowded or noisy, and we were really able to relax. The pool is large and though not heated, was a welcome relief from the heat. Sun loungers have plenty of space between them and there is no 'early morning stampede to get the best space' as each one is in full sun and each pair their own sun shade parasol and table. In addition there is a gazebo offering greater shade should you need to escape the sun completely!
We were lucky to have been allocated two amazing rooms - ours had its own terrace with a view over the gardens, pool and down to the sea across the hills. The evening sunsets were divine. Our daughter's room was huge, at the top of the hotel up a spiral staircase, also with it's own terrace and amazing views. We couldn't have asked for better.
The owner, Luigi, and his two male staff members, Andre and Gabriel, were amazing. Attentive, kind and hospitable and made sure our stay was perfect. They provided great, freshly prepared meals for lunch and dinner with ingredients purchased freshly every morning as per customer's menu choices. And each morning the largest croissants I have ever seen were waiting for every guest along with a variety of other options.
The hotel is comfortable, clean, rooms dressed daily and with uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection and reliable air conditioning. The maids too, are friendly and attentive.
This really is a hidden gem of a hotel and I am torn between giving it the glowing review it deserves and trying to keep it a closely guarded secret so that it doesn't lose it's intimacy and privacy!
We weren't particularly enamoured with Agropoli itself, but the location of the hotel was still within comfortable driving distance of Naples/Pompeii, and aside from our day trip we had no desire whatsoever to leave our perfect little haven.
Definitely will be back, and can't wait!
Amazing location

We've enjoyed a 6 night stay in this hotel, the place is outstanding & the views will blow you away! The staff members are extremley helpful, and will do anything to please you - you will always be greeted with a smile.
The food prepared is also very good & fresh- as they buy it in every morning, so you order you're evening meal in the morning for it to be freshly made the same day. The rooms we got are spacious, clean, and offer comfy beds in which we have slept without disturbance every night. Our room also had a lovely large balcony which has an amazing view of the mountains, sea and overlooks the pool. The best thing about this hotel is the quietness and intimacy it holds, due to the small amount of people that can stay here at one given time, it makes everyone acknowledge and make conversation with one another - which you don't get in a bigger hotel (plus the fact you often have the pool to yourself & evening meals).
Overall i would say this hotel in my opinion is more for adults than children due to the quietness and relaxation - rather than activities to do.
Just to add the pool is a 5******.
The only negative thing we have to say about the hotel is more of the area it is in, Agropoli isn't a 'touristy' place we thought it would be, but the hotel being slightly out the way this did not effect us. There was a couple of times at dinner however that did slightly let us down, one time we did not receive all the food we ordered with 2 out of 4 of us going slightly hungry, perhaps our own fault as we may have not come across well due to a language barrier. Another morning we also didn't receive all our croissants we were hoping to get with the answer that 'they were out' however the next two people arriving to breakfast after us received both croissants.
Charming Hotel, Beautiful Views, Wonderful Staff!

My family and I just spent 5 days in the charming Hotel La Colombaia and we loved every minute of it! We had 2 rooms and the views were spectacular, the region is quiet and peaceful, the rooms were lovely and comfortable. The staff and the owner Luigi made us feel at home and attended to all our needs. The rooms were very clean and the food was fresh, simple, and delicious. The pool is clear and clean and there is plenty of room to sit on chaise lounges. Our stress from traveling was wiped away in this relaxing hotel/villa. We did not rent a car but with the help of the awesome Carmine the taxi driver and Luigi, we were able to get to the lovely town center. Some of the guests that stayed during our trip rented mopeds or cars and that worked for them, but we did not want the stress of driving--after all, that is what we do every day back in the states, so it was nice to sit back and let someone drive us for a change The train in Agropoli was clean and air conditioned, so with the help of Carmine, we were able to explore by train too. The one tip I would pass to those who want to try this lovely hotel is to be considerate to the few 'asks' of the hotel. Luigi goes to the market every day to get fresh produce and meats for the daily meals, they simply ask you to say if you are staying for lunch or dinner by 11am ( although they allow a little wiggle room). I did not find this request to be a hardship as they were preparing meals fresh for us and could see the need for this rule. My daughter stayed in Agropoli near the beach for a week before joining us and she agreed it was better to stay in the hills then in town for the sheer beauty for the land and the hotel. ( by the way, good internet service and air conditioning!) Thank you Luigi and friends!!!
Charged twice - emails ignored!

We spent 6 nights at La Colombaia which we enjoyed, although we found it very difficult to find as no directions provided. However problems ensued after checking out where a demand for payment was made. It seemed a little steep in Euros for the price in sterling which I was quoted on Hotels.com when I made the booking back in February, but had no chance to check the current exchange rate. As the owner Luigi was so insistent about payment I assumed that payment hadn't been taken by Hotels.com However on our return home and checking my email confirmation I saw that payment had indeed been made in full at time of booking, which was confirmed by telephone by Hotels.com who also advised me that the amount demanded on day of departure amounted to £48 (55 euros) more than the priced quoted at time of booking. Not sure how this amount came about as no explanation was offered!
I subsequently emailed the hotel owner Luigi twice over the next couple of days or so regarding the matter and requesting a refund but to date have not received any reply of explanation or apology. Eventually after more calls to Hotels.com I fortunately received a full refund from them of the original amount plus the extra that was charged on top.
I consider Luigi's lack of response to this matter to be extremely unprofessional and unacceptable. We had got on well with him for the 6 nights we stayed there and made a point of having lunch there on 4 days out of 5, of which he commented on the fact that we had 'flown away' on that day (we had visited Paestum and had lunch there) - I felt like replying that surely we were free agents to go where we pleased!!
We found the breakfasts quite minimalist with one croissant allocated per guest, plus some dry bread, some not very fresh fruit and yoghurt. The Spaghetti Bolognese which we ordered at lunchtimes was served barely lukewarm with that being served on our last day comprising of a plateful of pasta with one spoonful of mincemeat on top which was almost cold!
On this basis I really could not recommend this hotel. We both found the bed was extremely hard which made sleep difficult. There was an unpleasant smell upon entering the main hallway. However our experience regarding being charged twice and our ignored emails certainly soured our stay at La Colombaia as it showed a very different side to Luigi!. Needless to say we will definitely not return!
Friendly 3 star

For amazing views and a room that yells the authenticity of an Italian holiday this is the place. Just a couple of items that should be addressed to ensure the hotel does not lose its rating. The bed was very very firm and as it was two singles pushed together it was raised in the center which made comfort very limited and rather restless nights. The bathroom towels were very thin nearly threadbare and should be replaced, breakfast limited whoever for additional couple of euros you can purchase ham or cheese for your toast or croissant or eggs cooked. An excellent location to base for exploring sights of the south. Luigi is lovely and helpful for info to visit or places to eat.
