Amazing hotel for an amazing Value with a beach!
mssylvia04on 03/11/2017 14:42This hotel is is lovely and it's across the street from the beach! Although it's nothing fancy, decor is out dated however it's clean and the staff were lovely. The Staff's English is limited however there were a couple that spoke English fluently. The breakfast is simple nothing fancy but the omelette is delicious and so are the cappuccinos.
The staff were accommodating with taking out the chaises longues for us at the beach at the end of October. The food in the restaurant is delicious! The housewine very good. Get a seaview room and sit on the balcony and watch the sunset while drinking their housewine. You can see the Strobe Volcano! Impeccable view!La Tonnara is not close to the villages so you need to rent a car or take a cab to get around. I had a lovely 3 days at this place. It was end of October so the hotel was empty and quiet which was perfect. I can't wait to come back! Thank you Franca and company!
La Tonnara- A wonderful hotel & restaurant
jjnapon 04/10/2017 08:45My wife and I traveled to Calabria to explore and walk in the steps of our ancestors. My ancestors are from a little village in Cosenza, and my wife's are from a village in Catanzaro. As a result, we sought a hotel about half-way between the two cities. We found our "hub" in Amantea in a hotel along the coast called Hotel La Tonnara .
First, I should state that our stay was during the "off-season" for Amantea (arriving on Tuesday 9/26/17 and departing on Saturday 9/30), and, as a result, we never faced bustling crowds as we may have if we journeyed there in the summer months. As retirees, we are able to travel during these "non-peak" times.
The hotel is located on a beautiful spot with the beach (right on the Mediterranean Sea) directly across the street. In fact, our room had a balcony overlooking the beach and the sea! This made for a wonderful vista both during the day and at beautiful sunsets, and into the evening! Sitting on that balcony sipping wine, while nibbling on Italian provolone cheese, and bread with olive oil, for us, approaches the idea of "La Dolce Vita"! The room itself was extremely large (with a queen-size bed and a single bed next to it), very functional, extremely clean and very well serviced each day that we were there. The bathroom also was large with a jacuzzi shower, a window also viewing the beach, and a large sink and toilet area, a room much larger than most bathrooms in Italian hotels. The room came with all of the expected amenities, a safe, TV, Wi-fi, A/C, etc.
The "director" of the hotel is a gentleman named Gianluca Miceli, who spoke excellent English and was as accommodating as a hotel director could possibly be. He was responsive to all of our needs and requests (I recently had knee surgery, and he was as sympathetic and helpful as one could hope for). He recommended places for us to visit and restaurants, however, the best meal that we had in Amantea was right in the hotel restaurant. We started with a seafood antipasto, that included calamari, shrimp, octopus, fresh anchovy, muscles, as well as a second plate with stuffed muscles, stuffed clams and also stuffed oyster. It was delicious fresh seafood cooked simply yet, elegantly! For dinner itself, I had the risotto fruiti di mare, and my wife had the gnocchi fruiti di mare. Both were delicious, again fresh seafood cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. We also had a large bottle of water (naturale) and a bottle of house wine. After dinner, I had a decaf cappuccino, and we shared a large helping of tiramisu, which, together, we couldn't finish. The service was excellent with multi-lingual wait-staff whose aim was to please the customer. The total cost for this delicious dinner in a beautiful dining room/ restaurant was only €47.50!
And did I mention a daily breakfast buffet (free with reservation)? The buffet included cappuccino or American coffee and/or tea, milk, juices, with fresh croissants, ham, cheese, salami, eggs- scrambled fried or omelette (I had a daily ham & cheese omelette that was delicious!) cereals, fresh fruit, breads (with toaster for toasting), etc., etc. A buffet unlike most Italian hotels that offer "continental" breakfast fare only. Again, the service for the breakfast was excellent.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel La Tonnara, and recommend it highly!

2017 Italy Trip with my Cugini
PamelaVitaliBakeron 16/09/2017 14:39About every two years my cousins and I visit the birthplace of our ancestors in Paterno, Cosenza, Calabria. To our delight, we continue to stay at Hotel LaTonnara in Amentea. Don't pass this jewel up.
Nice stay in september
Mauro Con 07/09/2017 00:12We rented a car so the parking they offer was key. Centrally located for our itinerary. Private beach available in front of hotel
Rooms were a little outdated but well kept. Worth the money and as advertised. I would stay here again if I came back to Amantea.
