    Mini break in Tenby

    Simon W on 15/11/2017 23:39

Decided we needed a battery recharge in West Wales, so booked a Sunday night 'cheap deal' at the The Strathmore in Tenby...£75 for a double room B&B, which we thought was very good value. And they upgraded us to a large suite, too, which was a lovely bonus! Comfortably appointed room, which looked as though it had been recently decorated. Friendly, helpful staff. Difficult to find fault with anything, however....the breakfast menu was a bit limited. There are a few cereals and you then really only have the option of the full Welsh breakfast, with 'unusual requests' (scrambled egg?) needing 24 hours notice! The location on Victoria Street presents very limited parking, but there is a car park 200 metres walk away. Unfortunately, none of the machines take notes (£5 for 24 hours) and the credit card facility had failed on all machines. Not the Strathmore's fault admittedly, but doesn't get your break off on a good start. Can certainly recommend the Strathmore for its brilliant location, attentive staff and overall presentation.

The Strathmore is a little gem

We travelled as a group of 5 couples and everyone thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Rooms well presented and equipped and immaculately kept. The breakfast was really tasty and well presented. Joe the proprietor is fantastic.

    Excellent.

Really nice, friendly family run hotel. Good full breakfast. Good location at the end of the beach and only a five minute stroll to the town centre. Good tea and coffee facilities in the room with plenty of supplies.

'A' for Style. 'B minus' for Substance.

Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: The Strathmore B&B is a very nice hotel. With its striking facade, it’s only a short walk from the 13th century walled town, the beautiful esplanade and the expanse of Tenby Beach. It’s well-appointed with many high end finishings and manages to combine those polished standards with a warm family charm, with many photos peppered throughout. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful (though we discovered our tastes in restaurants don’t quite match up as you’ll see in my separate reviews of The Buccaneer vs. The Lighthouse Kitchen and The Blue Ball).

Our double room was indeed spacious and crisply decorated with a clean and sophisticated ensuite bathroom. We did, indeed, have a sea view and were close enough to the off-site parking that we could keep an eye on our car. The bed was comfortable though we weren’t quite ready for the song of the morning gulls (one of the compromises you make for that seafront location). Tea and coffee making facilities were provided which was nice but it would have been handy to have some bottled water available. And though the towels were adequate, most of the other B&Bs we stayed at offered the giant bath sheets which we’d grown quite fond of. (A minor quibble.)

Breakfast is served in a cosy Spanish-themed dining room reflecting the background of the owner and was ample and tasty; with a prearrangement, we even had kippers one morning which was a nice treat. If I’m being honest though, it might have been nice have a bit more choice of cold offerings, perhaps a selection of fruit, yogurt and muesli rather than just cereal. Also, though friendly, there was a certain ‘assembly line’ aspect to the service — orange juice was already laid out on the table (even though the online menu references a choice of juice) and if you have a preference of toast, you have to catch them quickly or they’ll bring out both white and brown which is odd and can lead to waste as most people prefer one over the other. The advertised “preserves” for your toast turned out to be the usual vac-packed single serve jams and marmalades which are fine, but don’t seem to be in line with the marketing or elevated tone of the rest of the hotel.

Tenby was one of our favourite stops on our UK adventure and our experience at The Strathmore was a contributing factor. You can tell they’ve put a lot of work into the look and feel of the place and that is much appreciated. My only suggestion would be to elevate some of the finer points to match the impressive veneer.

    Great stay

Stayed here for four nights back in May. Joe was a great host, the room was immaculate/clean, bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and a great location, not far from the town centre. We would stay here again, cheers Joe !!
