Great service, but hotel is a bit dated

The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had a double room with an outstanding view. The room was very clean and comfortable albeit rather dated. WiFi is available in the room and in most public area in the hotel. Breakfast was good (nothing fancy, just a basic continental breakfast). The location is convenient as a starting point for hiking in the area. There is a waterfall less than 10 minutes from the hotel and the mountain ridge with various trails is accessible from the hotel's location. There is also a public bus stop very close/
Good hotel for a big group

My business decided to hold the annual retreat for our extended team at the Hotel Sternen, partly so that we could also visit the mountain peak of Chäserrugg, partly to be able to do group activities in the surrounding countryside, and partly to support the tourism and economic development of the Toggenburg area.
The Hotel Sternen is a historic "Grand" hotel. It is a lovely old hotel, but it is in an area of CH that is just a little "too close" to the major cities... meaning that fewer people stay overnight - many go home at the end of the day. This is a shame as this area is very beautiful, and tourism in the area (and the local economy) could use a boost.
The hotel is large and we chose it, as it could easily accommodate us (we were a group of over 50). Some rooms have been renovated recently to modern decor standards, ...but many other rooms are still in the style of the "woody" 70's. Although all the rooms are clean and well kept, the older ones are certainly more "historic" than what you might find elsewhere.
The hotel has a lobby with games and small bar, which suited our group well. Additionally it has very historic bar, and nice breakfast room on the ground level.
The dinner for our group on the first night was a large BBQ organised outside on the front terrace. Meat from the local butcher and salads and sides were nicely prepared and served. Breakfast in the morning featured a wide selection of local cheeses, baked goods, local eggs, and cured meats.
We used both the meeting and seminar rooms for one of the two days, and everything was well in order. The supplied projectors and equipment were all very good, and the set-up and management of the event logistics went very well.
The management, staff, and servers were all very nice and treated us very well, and we truly appreciated the efforts undertaken to make our visit and our team meeting a success.
In closing, the Hotel Sternen is not a 5* hotel, it is a nice big historic hotel, in a picturesque location in Switzerland, and the main local attraction for us was a visit to the new Mountain Station at the top of the Chäserrugg... But all in all this choice gave us good value for such a large group, and we were very satisfied with the results.
Good service, but could be modernized

We were in a family room, which was very spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was rather small for a family with small kids, but it was sufficient. The beds were comfortable and free wifi is working great and requires no complicated logins. The view from the room up the mountain is beautiful.
The package included a breakfast and 3-course dinner. As we were there during the start-up of the season, there were some very minor startup problems, but nothing really bothering us. There is a wide variety of local food available, which all tastes very fresh. The dinner was tastefull and service was perfect.
I think the hotel could use an interior make-over, especially in the lobby, which was kind of dark and old. The village itself was small and pittoresk.
Looking back, I think we would come here again, as the price (looking at average pricing in Switserland) was very well in line with the quality.
Great "event" week in Unterwasser in January 2015

We had organized our international yearly company event at the Hotel Sternen and I had the overall responsibility for the event. More than 60 persons from all over the globe attended the event. We appreciated the friendliness, flexibility and great support of the hotel team, and the wonderful, high quality food. We had 4 different conference rooms for plenum sessions or hands-on trainings which we could use for our individual needs. Mr. Claes, the General Manager, was very supportive, spontaneous and helped a lot concerning implementation and making sure that everybody was feeling comfortable. Of course the scenery and mountains were very impressive for our guest, especially for those from India, Thailand, Urkraine, Brazil who some of them have never touched snow or have seen these kind of mountains. I personally recommend the stay and friendliness of the Hotel Sternen.

Beautiful location, close to Zürich. We had wonderful warm sunny weather whilst down in Zurich region a thick fog remained. Hospitality is superb!
Went for a nice short hike up to the picturesque lake Schwendiseen with the reflection of the mountains on the water.
Food was immaculate!
We are coming back for a weekend soon to hit the slopes for the ski season.
