Perfect getaway in the Lakes
VincentBSwifton 05/08/2017 12:35Idyllic hill-crest setting overlooking Windermere, with the view not obscured by busy Bowness, just a mile down the hill. Feels like you,re away from it all but only 10 minutes into Windermere. Lovely conversion job on an old merchant's Country House, with a couple of score well-appointed rooms. Delightful drawing room and terrace, when clement. Adventurous set dinner menus, pretty good value, good cellar. Amazing, traditional breakfast - outstanding bacon and The Best black pudding. Not cheap but well worthwhile for a romantic weekend, or to take your Mother for a very civilized mid-week break.
Excellent Meal
shazzeron 12/07/2017 09:22My husband booked a meal here for my 60th birthday. The setting is beautiful, overlooking the lake. The grounds are excellent for sitting out for a g and t before dinner. The meal was very good, excellently presented and full of taste. Service was good, but we felt we were treated a little differently, which made me feel a little uneasy, as we weren't residents. However, we cannot fault the food.
Midweek Treat
Robert Lon 28/06/2017 23:11Last minute trip to the lakes with dog and baby. Warm welcome at the informal reception as we arrived and some lovely personal touches in our room. A welcome note for us, the cot already set up for the wee one and a note for the dog along with all the necessary essentials (bed, bowls) and some treats. Woke up to fantastic views over Lake Windermere, followed by an excellent breakfast. Very good selection both cold and cooked.
Reception staff very helpful in suggesting appropriate walks taking into account both the dog and the buggy.
Day 2 was very wet! It was very helpful to have wellies and umbrellas available to borrow. Beautiful grounds to wander around, feels very private and secluded despite being so close to the lovely town of Bowness.
Will definitely return after the exciting refurbishment is completed, hopefully next time we will be able to enjoy drinks on the sun terrace!
Wedding
Sarah Con 27/06/2017 13:38We chose to hold our wedding at Linthwaite, and also had our wedding breakfast here, and stayed not only for the wedding night but also the night prior.
For both nights we stayed in room 21, which is a larger room with a hot tub.
We found the room to be rather bland and tired, and we quickly came to the conclusion that the 460 pound per night was for the hot tub, not the room!'
On the first night we had a 4- course dinner which overall we found to be very nice. However, we were let down as my chicken arrived lukewarm, our drinks were spilled over the table as they were poured, and to our embarrassment the waiter asked what, if any, plans we had for the following day!
We placed our order for breakfast to be provided in the room the following day, the morning of our wedding. We were under the impression a table would be brought to the room with the breakfast as there was no table in the room. This did not happen, so, in the end we had to just sit in the chairs and eat from our laps. To add insult to injury we did not receive the yoghurt that we had ordered. Futhermore, the next morning we didn't receive the fruit we had ordered with our breakfast in the room. Although both mornings we had salmon, we found this inconsistent, one morning they gave us 1 bit of salmon each and the other morning 2 bits each!
The wedding ceremony itself went very smoothly and just as we had hoped- we are grateful to Abi the wedding planner for this. Overall- the food for our wedding breakfast was cooked well and we enjoyed it. On the other hand, the service left a lot to be desired. Throughout the meal our small party of 10 was left without drinks, and in the end one of our guests had to go to the bar themselves to ask for more drinks. Very disappointing and embarrassing for us.
After ordering the drinks, the waiter brought them to the table but didn't pour them.
There was a very long gap between our main and dessert and coffee/petit fours.
The time seemed quite substantial, the lack of drinks and stuffiness in the room added to the wait. After the wait for the petit fours our party was very eager to retire to the lounge. Only a couple of the petit fours had been eaten, it was to my understanding that the staff would bring them through for us to eat at our leisure in the lounge. However, the staff threw them away. I was flabbergasted. Shame my husband and I didn't get to try them.
We expected that we would be waited on in the lounge that was reserved for us but we were let down again when we had to go through to the bar and hope that bar staff were there. There was also a wait on certain bottled drinks as they hadn't been chilled. Following the evening we were happily surprised to find an iced bottle of Prosecco waiting in our room. However, we found the bathroom hadn't been cleaned and the tea/coffee hadn't been replaced. Also, the fresh milk bottle hadn't been replaced, therefore the following morning I couldn't have milk with my breakfast.
Upon departure we were again let down in that we were offered no help whatsoever with packing the car- especially so as we had wedding clothes and gifts, and it was pouring with rain. The nail in the coffin for our stay at Linthwaite was that as we checked out, the receptionist interrupted our checkout to facilitate a different persons checkout. Not only that, this person was offered a cup of coffee before their journey home whilst we were not. The receptionist didn't ask or seem to care at all about our time at the hotel.
We would have considered returning to the hotel for the hot tub or the food, but for the price we paid we didn't expect the room to be of that poor standard, or the staff to be of that negligent nature. Although our wedding ceremony itself went as we had dreamed, and the surroundings and location of the hotel fantastic, in hindsight we should have went elsewhere for our full package wedding.
Stunning Linthwaite.
hunta4on 24/06/2017 14:36Have been coming to Linthwaite for a decade or so with my late husband and also on my own. Andy, Sarah and the team particularly took great care of me after Michael's passing. I just love the place. Stayed just before the refurbishment and look forward to returning at Christmas to see the finished product, to get to know the new management team and hope Linthwaite will stay much the same as it has always been but better.
