Average hotel...expected better.

A big group of us came to this resort for a wedding. The resort itself is about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive from the airport in Cancun and is comprised of a few mini resorts. We all stayed on the Akumal resort which is beach front.
Rooms: We stayed in building 61 on the second floor. The room is a good size – we got a king size bed and a balcony. A/C always worked – fan was a bit loud. In typical Bahia style, there is no shower curtain – only a half glass wall. Taking a shower will likely result in a wet bathroom floor. Also there are no grips on the tub so it can be slippery and there are no fans in the bathroom, so it gets steamy quick. The bar fridge contains pop drinks, cans of beer, really small samples of basic liquor and some chips. My issue was with the bed – the mattress was sunk in and in need of replacing and the bed itself – sheets and pillows – always had this funky, moldy odor on them. Made it hard to sleep. Many people did request either a king size or double beds and many of those requests were not honoured.
Food: The food was hit or miss to be honest. We normally went to breakfast at the Los Corales adults only restaurant as it was closer to our room and less busy. The selection was pretty much the same each day. Normally at these types of resorts, the employee at the egg station are always good and know the basic egg orders. This one didn’t so I’d often get my egg not the way I wanted it. Nothing ever seemed fresh – the pancakes, crepes, French Toast, hashbrowns – always seemed either to be soggy or really hard. The buffet selection for lunch at this restaurant was pretty good. We tried the buffet and a few of the a la cartes for dinner – they were all average. The meat at dinner was normally really salty. The best dinner we had was at Cozumel on the Coba resort – pretty good authentic Mexican food. Keep in mind that only the main buffet has A/C – the others do not and there were times when we were sweating as we were eating our food.
Some issues around food: I had such a hard time finding guacamole. There were times when it either wasn’t at the buffet at all or all gone to the point that I had to scrape what I could off the spoon. On top of that, the chips always tasted really stale and hard. Same with the food at the Mexican corner. The drink service really needs to get better at the buffets. There were times where they didn’t even serve us coffee/tea in the morning and times when we had to get our water ourselves. This is just unacceptable. I’ve never been to a resort before where this was an issue.
Beach/Pools: There are plenty of pools around and yes it’s true that if you want some shade shelter at the pool you need to be up early – like 5AM/6AM to reserve your chairs. If you want a hut at the beach, this is not a problem. They were always available and there are plenty. Our solution was just to grab a hut at the beach which was closest to the adult infinity pool. The ocean is pretty rough but if there are many wave breaks that the resort created so you can find spots that are relatively calm and less rocky. If you enjoy sealife, you can snorkel pretty much anywhere and see fish but the best spot is right in front of the infinity pool. Lots of fish and some rock formations.
Grounds/Train: The resort is massive and the layout doesn’t make sense. For example, the area containing the shops, casino and disco are right at the highway, so pretty far from the Akumal resort. To get there, you need to take a train. But each train has a certain colour/destination they are going to and you will soon find that the train system is confusing and takes a long time to get anywhere. You will often find yourself on a train and then going right back to where you came from. We’ve heard that if you tip the driver they will bring you to your destination and not the one their train says.
Wedding: The wedding itself was nice. We went over to the Tulum resort to have it in the gazebo. One thing I will say is that the wedding staff should have cell phones or a direct line that the bridal party can have access to. They were 20 minutes late picking up the bride and she was desperately trying to get a hold of one of the wedding staff but the front desk kept directing her to the person’s office. I’m not too sure about the details the bride and groom were offered but it seemed a little odd to be transported all the way to one resort so that we can get shuffled back to the snack bar until the restaurant. Would have been nice if everything was closer together. They also rush you out of the restaurant as soon as your hour is up. So take that into consideration.
Other issues: My husband and a friend were walking along the beach and they happened to pass by an empty bar and the bartender asked if they wanted a drink. They accepted and the bartender began to prepare the drinks. As he was pouring the alcohol, his manager came running and yelling “No sir, No sir, No sir” at my husband as apparently this bar was only for Premier/Prestige Club members. My husband didn’t know this, there was no signage and the bartender clearly offered them a drink. It was the same drink we could have ordered at all the other bars. It wasn’t a type of alcohol only available at that bar. The manager made such a fuss and really angered my husband and our friend. The bartender should have taken a look at the bracelets if this bar was only for special members.
Overall, I’m rating this resort 3.5/5. The quality and selection of the food, the smell in the room, drink service and cart/train system is what is driving the low review. I’ve been to resorts in Mexico that have been better and I’ve been to Bahia Principe in Punta Cana, which was a lot better! When in Mexico, I would rather stay at a Dreams or Grand Palladium.
Excellent Wedding!

We and our wedding group of 57 had an amazing time at this resort! I chose it because it offered activities for everyone and we were not disappointed. The check in, our stay, and wedding were all wonderful. Alex at the concierge desk is amazing and provided exceptional service. Claudia and Paulina with the wedding group made sure everything went perfectly. Everything was on time and as arranged.
Tropic one for the photography was amazing! Thank you Santos! We initially were only going to buy a few pictures but after seeing them, we ended up buying the USB with all the pictures!
The resort itself is beautiful and the grounds, pools, and beach are immaculate. All of the staff work very hard and it shows. While it is rated as a five star , I would say it is more a 4.5 just because the room furnishings could be updated and there were a few minor issues.
The food is fantastic everywhere and you will not go hungry! All of the restaurants provide exceptional service.
I did the bridal hair package for the wedding and it was just ok. The girls in the spa are lovely, but if you can do a decent job in your own hair , the save the 99$US and do your own.
Thank you to the staff for making our wedding exactly what we hoped for!!

Fantastic resort! Most noticeable was the attention to cleanliness throughout the resort and much appreciated. Only stayed a week and because the resort was so large, wanted to experience as much as possible so did not really "connect" with any one particular staff member although each and every one we met was friendly and attentive. Incredible food at the many restaurants tried. Great weather, clean beach, lots and lots of lounge chairs in all the pool areas.....can't wait to return.
Perfect week away with the kids

We visited this wonderful hotel Nov 6th for a week, took our 2 kids (age 10 & 12). We all had an amazing time and highly recommend this hotel. We had a main floor room, block 62. Not the area we requested but it ended up being just what we wanted. We all enjoy walking and this location is a comfortable walk to both the snack bar/restaurant and the main lobby and pools. We ate at 4 a la carte restaurants, La Gran Tortuga, Mikado (show table),Tequila and Frutos del Mar. We opted not to do Gourmet with the kids as all of these (aside from Mikado) had a starter buffet. We have one very picky child and she was able to use the buffet and children’s Menu. Our favourite was Frutos del Mar for food and Mikado for the show! The other 2 were very good as well. The Akumal beach section is just right for the kids, they were able to snorkel and look at all the fish. It was also shallow and safe. We enjoyed taking the trolleys to all 3 resorts and ‘pool hopped’, water park was open last few days we were there and kids had fun. We always found loungers around the pools, not always a parasol but we love the sun so weren’t bothered. Lots of room at the beach. Nightly shows were well done, my family enjoyed watching every show after dinner. We did not use the kids club, our kids are older and we were here for family time, but we did see staff out with the kids and they looked to be having lots of fun. We were able to get off resort 2 days, did a private excursion one day (separate review) and took the colectivo to Tulum for shopping and the beach another day. This area has so much to do and we always felt safe leaving the resort. The Staff are wonderful here and go above and beyond. We were sad to leave and can’t wait to return. We would highly recommend this hotel for families.
Return visit didn't disappoint!

We have just returned from an amazing two weeks at Akumal! We previously stayed at the Sian Khan and although it was a great holiday the Akumal was just wonderful and much better! We stayed in the adult only section (block 83) and the room was brilliant - extremely clean, spacious and great amenities on offer! The butler service was great, I loved the scents available in the room and the option to have special pillows! The choice of breakfast in Las Corales was very good but you could also use the main buffet restaurant or the snack bar! The infinity pool was lovely and service from the pool bar really good. The beach was lovely too! The food was excellent with such a great choice of a la carte restaurants at Coba, Akumal and Sian Kann- the Alux, Maiko, Arelquin and Mashua were our top favorites!! We weren't so keen on the fish restaurant and the Dolce Vita but this was our personal choice. The whole resort was so clean and tidy and the overall service was fantastic - we really had no complaints at all! We love the Premier bar at Coba - relaxed atmosphere and a bit quieter if you wanted it. Entertainment across the resort was fantastic, we were really impressed with the quality and variety! Out and about, we took a taxi to Tulum and spent a day visiting the ruins and beach. This was great, wonderful ruins and the beach beautiful with a great vibe! We also went to Coba and climbed to the top, went swimming in a cenote and the whole day was very enjoyable! For us Akumal had everything we could want - great location, close to the beach, great, comfy room, fantastic service and fab food choices!! I would certainly recommend this resort. Well done Akumal!
