Its 8.00am on a Sunday morning in August and I'm on the rooftop, basking in the warmth of the rising sun, watching my 9 year old daughter practising her new found diving skills in the pool of the Madonnina Albergo. The light hitting the peaks of the Swiss Alps in the distance, the sound of the village below waking up and of course the massive smile on the face of my youngest child makes this a very special moment indeed.
The Madonnina Albergo Ristorante is strategically located only a few minutes from the Autostrada but feels like its in the middle of the countryside. In many ways this is the perfect hotel, with a perfect atmosphere and while its by no means pristine this doesnt matter at all because its completely overshadowed by how comfortable you feel as a guest. As many know, its quite a responsibility finding a hotel that will suit a family, yet also be somewhere which you will enjoy and be able to relax, sound in the knowledge that everyone is happy!
The family rooms, with AC, are huge, ours didn't have much of a view, but the layout provides for two sleeping areas and works well.
The restaurant, the service, the quality of food, the prices, were all spot on. We stayed for two nights (far too short) and despite being tempted by the restaurants around Lake Como (30 mins away) we opted to eat al fresco both nights in the hotel, firstly in the courtyard and then in the garden. The local chilled Gavi is a joy, as is the fresh pasta.
It was wonderful to see so many families, as well as couples, enjoying an evening meal in such idyllic surroundings, quite unique. The Limido family have owned the hotel for many years and the sense of 'family' is so clearly reflected in the product they offer. They and their staff all work very hard for long hours in high season but this commitment really pays off.
Our big regret was leaving! I'm sure most guests that stay in Cantello are either travelling North or South but actually this is a super destination. With easy access to the lakes, Milan just 40KM away by road or rail, Mendrisio designer store outlet 6km and a great hotel to stay in, what more can you ask.
My wife and I intend to sneak away for a few days quality time and our destination is an easy choice.
Huge thanks to the Limido family (and daughters boyfriend!) for making our stay so memorable. See you again soon!

We stayed three nights at Madonnina, and it was a great experience from start to finish. The hotel is run by a very nice family, and they have managed to establish a hotel with very nice and spacious rooms, a great restaurant and very friendly staff. The breakfast is fantastic, where everything is made to order - no sloppy buffet here. The dinner is really good as well. There is a pool area, and although the pool isn't the biggest in the world, it's perfectly fine for this hotel. We were planning on going on a lot of daytrips, but enjoyed the hotel so much that we chose to stay there. There's a nice little public playground right outside, and a small town 5 minutes away with nice little restaurants. I would definitely come back!

Booked the hotel late on the afternoon when we were driving into italy on our roadtrip. We were just looking for a cheap place to sleep for One night, but we ended up taking two nights ;) The Albergo is very charming and personal decorated, the facade is all covered in visteria. The family running the hotel is truely very charming and very helpfull. On the adjacent annex there is a nice roofgarden with a little poolarea.
I can highly recommend this hotel.

Found a gem in this beautiful Italian haven - perfect in every way . Fab rooftop pool with the most amazing view .
Travelling around Europe with five children has its hurdles when it comes to accommodation!! But not with this hotel . Hospitality was second to none ! Very family orientated and the owner Roberto was the perfect host . Look forward to a return visit .

We love this hotel. We have stayed here many times in recent years. The family make you so welcome. They could not be kinder, more generous or better hosts. Rooms are spacious and so well thought out. Very comfortable. We always sleep well here. Wifi is fast. Interesting artwork and sculptures are dotted around. The food is superb - just gets better and better. We had the special asparagus menu last week. Absolutely delicious. This hotel is just over the border from Switzerland and we stay here on day two of our three day journey from London to Umbria. You can get to Milan Varese Como etc easily from here too. There is a swimming pool on the roof of the annexe. Breakfast is excellent- eggs, ham, cheese, fruit, biscotti, yoghurts etc and good strong coffee. We like to walk down to Cantello in the early evening or up high behind the hotel where the views are stunning. We usually stay mid week and avoid weeks where there are major exhibitions/Expos etc in Milan as it can be very busy we understand. Relaxing and a bit "quirky". Recommended.
