What People are saying

Excellent

MFDB92 on 22/11/2017 15:05

Really enjoyed my stay here at magnums. The staff were very friendly and approachable ! The room was lovely and clean. WiFi was decent. The location of the hostel was excellent. Woolworths right beside you and the pub at your doorstep. Everything you need is close by 😊

Horrible experience. Stay somewhere else!!

Tanya M on 20/11/2017 09:26

Was rather pleased initially by the hostel. Great location and spacious rooms in a nice set up. Customer service however was rather poor, staff were rude on multiple occasions and very disorganised with multiple errors and mistakes throughout our 3 day stay. Firstly check in took 40minutes standing in the heat with our bags as there was some confusion about the booking and staff were not very friendly during this time.

During check in, you are required to leave a passport, ID, credit card or $50 cash to get a key. A little absurd, and a copy of credit card details or passport like every other hostel in the world was not sufficient enough. As I was traveling light and from a more local area, I only had my ID and a salary packaging credit card so couldn't leave anything at the front desk as I would need both of those during my stay and can't get into the bar without the ID, I also can't withdraw from that card at the ATM to get the $50 cash. Reception therefore said I couldn't have a room key, I would have to knock on the door to the room every single time and get my friend to let me in. How ridiculous!
At the end my friend had to leave both her passport and her ID for me to get a key. It was concerning that all the passports were just stored in a drawer at the front desk next to the public bar as it didn't feel very secure.

Once checked in everything seemed ok at first. The air conditioning is pre-set so cannot be adjusted in the room. It is also programmed on a timer turning on and off at set times. During the day when it was hot it was good although still chilly however, If on the top bunk, it is literally like a blizzard gusting on you as the air cons are well more than efficient. Strangely the set times for the air con include 11pm- 1am and 3am-5am (The coldest hours of the night). It was only 15degrees overnight when I was there yet still the air con activated - very unnecessary. There are also ceiling fans in the room that could be used instead overnight to avoid needing the air conditioner at this time which would probably even save the hostel money. As you are only provided with a thin sheet expecting it to be hot overnight, I was curled in the fetal position shivering for hours in a tracksuit and hoodie and all of my warm clothes with no way to turn the air con off. My friends and I wrapped ourselves in our beach towels overnight to try and be warmer. The next day we were upset about how cold it was overnight. I went to speak to reception about it, ensuring to be polite in my feedback/concerns, however staff were rude, defensive and even seemed angry at my concerns. I was given multiple reasons as to why the air con must go on overnight including to help avoid mould (not helping obviously as the ceiling fans were completely covered in a layer of dark mould and the ceilings have never been cleaned with spider webs +++ literally 1.5ms about your head while you sleep). I was told I could pay money to hire a blanket - even though its only $12 with $10 refundable, it seems to be an injustice when you only need it because they freeze you to death. After expressing frustrations about how uncomfortable my stay was, I was told I could fill out a feedback form and that nothing else could be done and that even though all of us in the room wanted the air con to be deactivated over night, it was too bad and nothing could be done about this.

My friend i was traveling with had an issue with her booking. Despite having a printed invoice stating that she was booked for 1 person for 2 nights, On arrival, they said she was booked for 2 people for 1 night and that there may not be room for her the next day so she would have to check out in the morning. In the morning she got up, packed everything and went to check out then was re-issued back to our same room so she never actually had to pack or check out in the first place. When I went with her to check out after her second night, firstly they said they had no one by her name booked in at all, then eventually when they figured it out, they quite rudely demanded she paid for a third night that she 'owed' when she had only stayed for 2 nights. We were at the front desk for ages arguing this until they finally understood that she didn't owe the 3rd night that she hadn't stayed there for. My friend was checking out the night before me, after she had left the staff came to my room and put a sign on the door asking for her to report to the office to pay money that was owed when we had just sorted out all out at the desk. These people can't tell their heads from their butts I swear!

On our second morning we were woken abruptly at 7am to electric drills, hammers and tools and workmen shouting. This went on all day as construction took place directly next door to our room. When we asked about this, the woman at reception was super rude, said it would go on from 7am. No 'sorry for the inconvenience' or 'sorry you weren't informed about this'. No customer service or communication skills at all.

Needless to say that between the blizzard air con and the construction and the loud nightclub directly next door with music blaring until 3am, we got zero sleep during our stay at this hostel. The hostel also was missing half a fence and random people walked through from the car park to the bar so it was pretty unsafe.

When my other friend and I went to check out, they said they couldn't locate her name or her passport or ID. After my friend got really upset, eventually they found it misplaced in another drawer. Not very safe and reliable storage of a passport!

Overall the experience wasn't great. I wasn't comfortable during the stay, could not sleep and found the staff unhelpful and rude and had to waste time dealing with multiple issues and errors rather than just enjoying ourselves. Honestly if I new in advance I would have stayed down the road at the YHA. I met several travelers who highly rated that hostel and I am regretful that I did not stay there. All of these issues could have easily been rectified with positive customer service but that was seriously lacking.

Food stolen twice - hostel didn’t care

ImogenWillis on 13/11/2017 13:41

While staying here for 4 nights I got my entire food bag stolen twice out of the fridge. The hostel didn’t care at all and no one apparently knew how to work the cameras. I was deeply upset by this as I carefully budget for food and my budget was ruined not only once but twice. There is no other place to store food as the fridge in the rooms are designed for bottle of drink not good bags.

The 8 bed room itself was spacious but had an ensuite bathroom which offered no privacy as there were huge gaps at the top and bottom of the door which led to he toilet and the shower. We ended up using a shared bathroom in the next hut.

This is a proper party hostel with people getting drunk every night in their terrace of their huts. Loud music plays very late with no curfew or cut off. WiFi only works in a small benched area which is always packed and has no where to sit. More seating is required as it’s the only place to get WiFi.

Security at magnums was slack and the fence was non existent in some places and people used it as a cut through to the main high street. Anyone could walk thorough the hostel. No control at all. Very unsafe.

Close to Woolworths and on main high street. Representative meets you at greyhound bus to walk you to hostel.

Amazing hostel

Really good hostel with good vibes and nice bar with live music. The staff are very helpful, especially Alana who helped us getting checked out at a very early time! Would definitely recommend if you're coming to airlie beach

Best hostel in Airlie!

Noortje F on 31/10/2017 08:38

Airlie is such a magical place and magnums has such a good location and is definitely the best place to stay! The cabins are so cute, with your own shower and toilet, and a fridge in the room to keep your beers cold 😎 because you can work for free accomodation, they give you a lot of freedom so you can stay as long as you want :))) they have the friendliest staff, especially Alana! And very good deals on tours!
