Held too much on credit card for incidentals ...refused to correct

S C on 21/11/2017 08:16

My stay at this property was NOT pleasant. Before arriving funds paid through a convention housing bureau had not been credited to my account; upon checkin front desk agent placed a hold on my card; two hours later another hold was placed on my card (thank God for credit card notification); after speaking with a front desk agent, and the front desk manager I was offered $10 to the Market that sold hot pockets and the like; left a voice message for the GM...no reply; called corporate office; customer service agent spoke with manager and agreed $10 market offer was sufficient;
I requested the second hold be reversed and the correct amount be authorized...my request was NOT honored; This does not even take into account the dust in the room, and the bug crawling in the bathroom. Finally, at check I was informed points could not be earned because my stay was paid through the conference’s housing bureau. Yet, another conference attendee stayed at the Marriott on 4th Street in San Francisco and earned all her points. This property obviously has poor leadership and does live up to the Marriott brand I am accustomed to doing business with. Save yourself many headaches by NOT saying at Courtyard Marriott San Francisco Downtown, 299 2nd Street.

My room was given away.

My room was given away. Despite calling ahead to let the hotel manager know my flight was delayed (and getting verbal agreement that my room wouldn't be given away), and despite the fact that I prepaid for my room via check, my room was still given away when I arrived that evening. I appreciate that the hotel made other arrangements for me, but this was hugely disappointing and has made me lose faith in the brand. I had to leave the other hotel very early to give myself time to drive back to the Courtyard to check in for the remainder of my stay and to drop off my bags (I think I might have slept for a couple hours, max). I nearly missed my business presentation that morning.

Not What's Expected from a Marriott Courtyard

If this hotel was in, say, Winnemucca, and was priced at $100 per night, it could have been a four star review. However, for close to a total of $270 per night in San Francisco, it's a major disappointment.

I started my history with this hotel chain back in the mid 80's, soon after the first location opened in 1983. I remember being impressed with my first few stays. The early hotels followed the concept of an actual courtyard surrounded by the low-rise buildings with hotel rooms. The courtyard in each of the early hotels was a pleasant mix of green vegetation that was very nice to walk through and look at from the inside-facing rooms. Marriott went away from this idea, and currently slaps the Courtyard name on any type of a hotel structure. The one in San Francisco is a typical high rise building, with no reminders of the original concept.

At first, the check-in proceeded smoothly. The front desk agent was efficient as he assigned the room and went over the salient points of our stay. The problem started when I asked him to confirm our complimentary breakfast buffet. I asked him because our reservation confirmation did not mention it, but the Marriott reservations agent did when I made the reservation. In fact, I wanted to make sure of this offer, so I called the Marriott central reservations number to confirm, prior to coming to San Francisco. And, for the second time, the person I spoke to confirmed that we'll have four complimentary breakfasts for our party. This was on account of the rate that I've booked, or our Marriott Rewards level, or a combination of both. Well, lo and behold, the check in agent at the hotel started to aggressively push back on providing the complimentary breakfast. He even went as far as starting to lecture me about Courtyards never providing free breakfasts, and wanting to know if I ever stayed at a Courtyard before, etc. This guy has obviously never gone to the Marriott charm school. In the end, the worst of this was the agent's attitude and demeanor. He had no concern for the fact that I was twice told of the offer by Marriott's own employees, and wanted only to press his point regarding his hotel's services. If his attitude was less cocky, less aggressive, and friendlier, perhaps I would have been fine with purchasing the breakfast. In the end, the situation was saved by the front desk supervisor that evening. He was the exact opposite of his subordinate: courteous, friendly, and accommodating. He comped us the buffet and apologized for the misunderstanding; but, the damage was done...

The next thing that went against this hotel was the overall feeling of small spaces and underwhelming decor. The lobby area perhaps would be ok, but the rooms were small and totally non-inspiring. The bathroom could have been taken straight from a budget hotel like Motel 6; no style or class. The room furnishings were as basic as they can be, again reminiscent of what one would expect from a budget chain. And there were other design compromises, such as a very cramped elevator lobby, that just kept piling on to the overall poor impression. Even the pool, which is a key reason that we stayed here as many other properties in the city do not feature this amenity, was a big let-down. The pool towels were just a joke, about one third the size of a typical hotel pool towel at the level that this Courtyard pretends to be. At least the bed in our room was comfortable...

The next morning, we had the hard fought-for breakfast. Well, there was nothing special here either. Sure, the buffet was good, the selection acceptable, and the cooked-to-order omelets and breakfast burritos a nice touch. However, this is pretty much the same as in many other hotels in the United States, which often offer these spreads for free. We came out satisfied, and on the way out asked how much this would have cost were we to pay for breakfast. $88 and change was the answer; hmmm... I think that if we had to pay, we would have done much better by finding a restaurant outside the hotel.

The final straw was the ridiculous parking charge of $62 per night. That's right, 62 bucks to park the car at the hotel. And this is not even for a 24 hour period; we checked-in around 8 in the evening, and had to remove the car by 3 the next afternoon, or face additional charges. The parking was valet only, but still, seems way exorbitant.

After we got to our room the evening we arrived, I decided to check the prices for that night at other hotel venues in San Francisco. It turns out that for basically the same amount per night, we could have stayed at one of a broad selection of excellent hotels, where I've stayed at before and had a completely satisfactory experience. We'll be repeating our visit to one of these other properties the next time we come to San Francisco.

Excellent service

Very accommodating when we checked in early. I wish I would’ve made note of the gentleman who took care of us. Check out the newly remodeled rooms, pretty cool. Only downside was the room we were in didn’t have a darkening shade on the window, but we were up early and it didn’t end up being an issue. Hot tub was hot, which was great after a long day of cycling. Great location to start your trip from, we were not there for business but only a couple nights in the city for anniversary. Would stay again.

Renovated, modern, functional

Pleasantly surprised at the remodel and spacious room in the heart of downtown. Stayed in room #547. Needed a place to crash before a big meeting and this place was definitely worth it. Clean, comfortable. Free WiFi, 24 hr gym and Starbucks- everything needed to feel at home. Absolutely LOVE the couch. Would definitely stay here again.
