What People are saying

Isla Canela = Native Spain

BetBas on 08/11/2017 16:05

We visited in September this year and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel is located in a very native Spanish area on Isla Canela. It isn't really an Island as such but just separated from the mainland by a short road. If you want to experience an area of Spain which isn't touristy then this is for you!

We flew into Faro which was only about 45 mins away. The Airport is currently undergoing a renovation programme which didn't affect us when we arrived but was a little chaotic when we left so just allow yourself sufficient time. We booked the transfer through the hotel as we were a little bit apprehensive about arriving in a different country to our holiday destination but it all went very smoothly even if it was a little on the pricey side but it was worth it to have peace of mind. Don't forget to take the time difference between Portugal and Spain into consideration when booking your return transfer!

We arrived at the hotel late morning but the hotel staff were very accommodating and we were checked in by 1.00 pm. We had a Junior Suite which had a stunning view over the beautiful golden sand beach. We really enjoyed long walks along the beach as it goes on for miles and miles and is very clean. You can hire sunbeds and a parasol for either a whole day or half a day at a reduced price but the beach is such a short walk from the hotel that we tended to spend our days around the pool with regular visits to the beach. There are plenty of sunbeds at the hotel but only some of these are around the pool so you do tend to need to be down there early if this is your preference. I'm sure this is even more evident in the high season months. The hotel provides pool towels which you're able to change daily between certain hours. The pool is lovely and clean but it is cold!

All of the hotel staff were very attentive and our room was cleaned very promptly and thoroughly each morning. We have stayed in a Melia Hotel before and although we were only B&B the food was as good as ever with so much choice. We even ended up visiting the Buffet a few evenings as the food was so fresh and tasty. Although we didn't partake in any of the activities, the Animation Team were one of the best we have ever come across and you couldn't fault their enthusiasm and hard work day after day.

The Hotel has a small shop and there's a Supermarket just a short 5 minute walk away, together with an Ice Cream Parlour that sells just about every flavour of Ice Cream under the sun. There are also a few restaurants around the Marina although by September their opening hours are more limited with most places being shut on a Monday. You also have to adjust to the Spanish way of life with most restaurants not opening much before 9.00 pm but with sunset not being before this time it just meant that we had longer to enjoy the lovely weather each day. The only negative from our point of view was that some restaurants only had fish on their menus. We obviously knew there would be a lot of fish being so close to the sea but we were surprised by the lack of any meat dishes at some establishments.

There is also a bus stop close to the hotel which runs a regular service to Ayamonte although the frequency diminishes in low season. There are lots of lovely restaurants in the town, but again, be warned that a lot are closed on Mondays. From Ayamonte you can also get a Ferry boat over to a small town in Portugal.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and definitely hope to visit again very soon.

Happiness is Melia Atlantico

Fourth stay in this hotel. I love the atmosphere and the cleanliness of the hotel. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel is very close to the beach and promenade. There are a few cafes / bars close by. This is a quiet resort , it is not like the the more touristy places in Spain. It is a beautiful area with trips to Sevilla or take the local bus to Ayamonte. Can't wait for my next visit in 2018.

Relaxing atmosphere with excellent staff

This was our second stay here. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. Our chambermaid was fantastic, everything perfect when she'd been. Some individuals were outstanding in their friendly welcoming attitude. We've already booked to return next year.

Very good indeed

We had a week in July 2017 here and were pleased that the good reviews were accurate. The hotel is a modern, clean and maintained to a high standard, our room was adequately sized with a sea view, which was a good choice but we noticed there were some smaller rooms on the same floor so take note. Staff were on the whole excellent, worked very hard and were always pleasant, the entertainment team had a range of activities daily with something for everybody. We also went All Inclusive and what a good decision that was...food is wide ranging and of a very high standard, no complaints on this front.

Location is away from the main tourist centre's but you can walk round the harbour area where there are a few shops and bars or even get in to Ayamonte on the bus which is the nearest town, from here you can catch the ferry to Portugal (don't forget to change the time on your watch).

The hotel has a great pool area and gates through to a short walk to the sandy beach. Right on the doorstep is the long promenade which goes for a couple of miles along the sea front with stalls selling their wares. Hire bikes from the hotel for a couple of hours and you can cycle all along the promenade at a leisurely pace and stop along the way to enjoy a cool drink, really relaxing. If you feel lazy then choose an electric bike instead.

July had a good mix of hotel residents with families and couples of a wide range of ages, although probably less elderly residents at this time of year, but plenty of Spanish residents and note that much of the children's entertainment is based in the local language with English added (not the other way round).

Have a day trip to Seville with a guide taking you round....what a great city, lots of Game of Thrones is filmed so don't forget your camera there however be aware that it gets very hot in summer.

In summary.....well we might go back and do it again, enough said.

A Little Disappointed

We booked this hotel through Thomson, who have it listed in their Platinum category.
On arrival the hotel looked very good & in an excellent location for a quiet holiday. However, to get to the reception we had to pass by a number of people standing outside of the main entrance smoking, which is not very welcoming. It was the same case every time we left & returned the hotel throughout our two week stay.
At reception, we were processed very quickly then it was up to our superior sea view room. Although the room was clean, it was dated & the decoration was tired. We also noted the bathroom was well overdue an update & there were signs of mould around the bath.
In the public area the hotel offers a very spacious patio area, excellent outdoor swimming pool, a very accommodating undercover lounge area & a great spa area. My main complaint about the pool area is the very loud, pounding music played when they have daily activity sessions. Why it has to be so load for the few people exercising in close proximity to the speakers is beyond me.
The dining room is large with buffet service. Breakfast was always well presented & enjoyable, if a little repetitive. Evening meals were not so enjoyable. At times the food quality was at best mediocre, dry through standing on a counter too long or over cooked. The menu range seemed to span one week, so if you were there for two weeks, you got a double dose. Occasionally we chose to eat out to avoid dining disappointment.
If you are not all inclusive you will soon discover that the hotel bar prices are ridiculously expensive when compared to local restaurants that are within easy walking distance. Try Dante Cafe who have an excellent bar & offer good service.
Isla Canella's Punto del Moral is a nice location with a great 7 km esplanade. Porto del Moral is the fishing port. This is where the local people live & where you will find the best but few cafe/bars & restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Restaurant Pamela for fresh seafood.
It is unlikely we will return to this hotel.
