What People are saying

A unique and unforgettable taste of rural Spain

therealem on 28/10/2017 05:51

We had a wonderful stay at Molino Rio Alajar with our 2-year-old daughter, and were quite heartbroken to leave. We fell in love with the beautiful grounds, the solitude of the location, the unique and homey villa (we stayed in Casa La Cigüeña), and of course the friendly dogs - especially Nana, who our daughter still asks about! It was very relaxing to wander the grounds, pick fresh herbs for dinner and relax on our balcony with a beer at sunset. Peter jan and Monica are very helpful and accommodating; we greatly appreciated their willingness to organise a shop and also a delicious home-cooked meal for us prior to our arrival. Our daughter had a ball playing with the dogs, the cat, and visiting the donkeys. She also enjoyed the toddler pool and sandpit. We enjoyed several day trips to nearby Alajar and Aracena, but also had fun just hanging out the grounds. All in all it was a great choice for a quiet, relaxed family holiday. We hope we get to return one day :)

3 day walking break

This is a truly fantastic spot.
We were lucky to have 30 degree sunshine in October and walked the ‘Gorge walk’ and the ‘Linares loop walk’ both of which had maps provided by our hosts Peter and Monica.
Peter and Monica were great hosts and our stone house had everything we needed and more including a well stocked fridge and very friendly dogs!
The short walk to the local village led to bars and shops too if required.
We wishes that we could have stayed for longer.
An idyllic spot.

Lovely retreat with exceptionally generous hosts

Our walking holiday was very well organised by Peter Jan and Monica taking us through beautiful countryside full of spring flowers and birdsong.

The casita at Molino Rio Alajar was comfortable and colourful. Peter Jan and Monica did everything to make us feel welcome. When we arrived the fridge was full of everything we might have wanted and more. We had asked for a meal to be provided on our first evening and it was delicious.

PeterJan and Monica had arranged for us to walk from their hotel to two others, both excellent. It was a really great holiday and we recommend it highly.

Unique setting , with a hugely warm welcome

We booked through MacAdventures and wasn't sure what to expect.

Pleasantly knocked out by a thoughtfully crafted cottage, comfortable with some nice detail.

A fridge was generously packed with breakfast goodies ( easily stretched to snack lunch) and a welcome bottle of wine can be augmented by an honesty bar.

Owners were away ( which created some initial contact confusion), but there was a warm welcome from a family friend, which was cheerfully maintained throughout our 3 night stay.

Well researched walks and guidance available, with dogs to guide/ join you for some real treks. Makes a perfect base. If we go again, we will take some detailed maps.

Torches lent for the 20 minute walk to nearest village and supper. The pool is freezing ( mountain water) and facilities fairly laid back/some work in progress.

There is some extra- ordinary good restaurants scattered across isolated villages, so worth research.

Highly recommended destination

Keep coming back!

I first reviewed Molino after our second visit back in 2012 and here we are again! However we have in fact been back twice before now and this is our fifth visit. So I think you can guess how much we love this place. The peace, tranquillity and friendship that we always find here keeps drawing us back.

Again we stayed in Zoya, our home from home. Over the years we have seen those small changes and watched the trees around it grow and offer increasing shade. The dogs are all still there and this year we had the pleasure of a rather cheeky cat that stole and unguarded sandwich!

The walks still attract us and the bird watching is always interesting. The nice thing about going back to a place that you love is that you can just chill which is what we did!
