My only complaint is that I did not stay longer here!

Monte Cristo Inn was an excellent choice for my husband and I to stay during our visit to San Francisco! The breakfast in the morning was amazingly deliciuos! There were fresh berries, homemade pastries, breakfast quiche, muffins, and an assortment of beverages. in addition, you could order anything you liked from the kitchen! Every night when we arrived back to the Monte Cristo after a big day of touring we were greeted with fresh cookies and desserts! The Inn has great architecture and decor. It was very warm and inviting. I really felt like San Francisco instead of staying in a larger chain hotel that looks like I could've been staying anywhere. Our room had a very comfortable bed and a beautifully upgraded bathroom. At first I was concerned because the Inn is a little outside the downtown and wharf area, but the Inn is in a quiet, clean, beautiful, and safe neighborhood (downtown is noisy, smelly, and there are many, many homeless people) and only a 6-7 minute uber ride into downtown or the wharf. My only complaint is that I did not stay longer here! I would recommend the Monte Cristo to anyone staying in the San Francisco area! :)
Has some flaws

The place is very comfortable but if you are looking for a typical b&b experience the food is lacking and monotonous. Nick (chef) is either watching reruns of Full House or cartoons on the sitting room tv making you feel like you are invading his space.
The menu is guaranteed to be the same every day. A quiche for breakfasts, store bought croissants or doughnuts. In afternoon bread pudding left out uncovered to attract gnats through open unscreened windows.
Needs work.
I almost hate to share this wonderful little secret.

I was visiting San Francisco for work for a few days. All the hotels in the area were beyond reasonable. Yet, this little gem showed up and seemed the right price and right place. But of course I was cautiously optimistic. When I landed at SFO I had a text from Jack (manager) welcoming me to town and asking for my expected arrival time, if i needed parking directions, etc...
Upon arrival check-in was super easy. Room was very nice and well-appointed and very clean. Literally- cleaner than a 4 or 5 star hotel. In addition, there were drinks and food available at all hours.
I look forward to coming back. Thanks for a great experience.
Character, understated quality and value

We booked 4 nights for our first visit to San Francisco mistakenly thinking the location was near Union Square when Union Street was mentioned in the directions. In fact it is well out of the centre in the much nicer and quieter neighbourhood near Pacific Heights. With a 3 day Muni pass allowing travel on all buses, trolleys , Street cars and trams, it proved easy to get anywhere. The number 1 and 2 buses pass right by and within 15 mins of the centre where you can jump on a street car.
The building is 19th century and tastefully decorated and furnished as are the rooms.
Breakfast is in a small dining room with an excellent healthy buffet with eggs and bacon cooked freshly on request. Coffee is available all day with cookies and occasional deserts in the afternoon.
A room with access to a computer with printer is a great touch usually only available in large hotels.
Friendly efficient and helpful staff and clearly discerning fellow guests who appreciated the smaller niche boutique style.
Our only issue was the traffic noise when we had to leave our window open during the hot weather of our first 2 nights especially as their is a fire station on the street but this proved no problem and we slept well in the lovely king. We were offered a room change to the rear but preferred our light modern double sink bathroom.
No fridge in the room but not an issue.
Overall a very relaxing comfortable inn which proved a well located great base to explore this great city.
We will return.
Checks all the boxes!

Stay here on the front end of a conference and wanted to be centrally located without being near Union Square or Fisherman's wharf. This was the right spot as numerous bus routes wherever we wanted to go within easy access. We got a 3 day bus pass and use the SF transit app on our phones to get everywhere with never a parking hassle. Also when we did pick up a car to head south we were able to street park it relatively easily. We stayed in the Junior Suite which is which is quite spacious with small living room with what appeared to be futon couch. Not sure how it would sleep. Great bathroom with a rain shower shower. I was worried about the noise from Presidio and the nearby fire station but double insulated windows almost negated the street noise completely. Most windows though open for fresh air. Breakfast was great with fresh fruit, granola, made to order eggs, sausage and fresh sour dough bread. I did not leave for any day's adventures hungry.
