Den Of Thieves

Sleep with your possessions In your hand! The Doors don't lock, and the Residents can come and go as they please. If you are in your room or not, they can and will take what they want. You would be much safer and have a nicer, safer place if you found another place to stay. Having traveled to many Foreign locations, I understand the lack of services, but not the ability to keep your customers safe.
A great time on the river

We came here for the chance to fish tarpon. The fishing gods conspired against us but that is why it is called fishing and not catching!
We came knowing that the place is an eco lodge operating "off the grid" and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. In our opinion, the food was great, the guides very experienced, and the owner Augustine, a great conversationalist and a generous person.
The cabins were sufficiently furnished and provided with fans that we never did use.
Also, the jungle location provided one with the experience of the night time sounds with the transition to daybreak and its wonders.
Time may preclude us from returning but we would certainly recommend it to others who would wish an experience of a lifetime.
If you are lucky, you may even hook a fish!
Is the best on the river

Montecristo River Lodge

We went to El Rio San Juan for Semana Santa and stayed at the Montecristo River Lodge. The hotel is located on a hill top that overlooks the river and what an impressive view it is. At the top of this hill there is a palapa equipped with hammocks and rocking chairs, the perfect place to chill out and just watch the river flow and boats pass by. After being greeted by Agustin and his wife we were showed to our cabin and on the way, we noticed the dining area, an open area with a roof top, and the kitchen.
Our cabin was basic, mostly all hotels at the river san Juan don’t have air-conditioning or hot water, although we did have a fan in our room, nice comfortable beds and clean bathrooms.
The first thing we wanted to do after lodging into our cabin was to go down to the docks and use the kayaks, we paddled across the river and let the current gently take us, after we dived in the water and went swimming.
Agustin was getting ready for a fishing excursion with some of his guests, which he personally led. He later told us that Tarpoons and Snoks are the prize that fishermen at the River San Juan go for.
Montecristo is a private wildlife reserve, full of trails and paths that are great for hiking, and bird watching, we saw a boy riding a horse being guided by one of Montecristo’s staff. Later we walked through some of the trails and got to Montecristo’s plantations, Cacao, pineapples, guanabana, lemon, papaya, avocado, mandarin, orange, plantain, coconut, and much much more all for the hotels consumption. I had never tasted guanabana a sweet fruit took some home.
The best thing at Montecristo, after the view from the hilltop, was the home made food, delicious; I had meat fajitas, mash potatoes, beans and rice, tortilla, avocado, pico de gallo, garden-fresh cabbage and freshly made Jamaica juice. Agustin sat down with us and had a pleasant conversation telling us more about the hotel and his fishing excursión.
After dinner, we were tired and went to bed early, the next morning we were going back to mainland and Agustins wife helped us arrange our boat trip back.

Rustic Relaxing Lodge

The Montecristo River Lodge is off the beaten track, but relaxing. The owner is extremely accommodating working non-stop to get us to the lodge when it appeared that the boat from San Carlos might be cancelled. The lodge personnel are extremely friendly with the meals, simple but delicious. Unlimited beer and rum was a wonderful extra. Rooms are spacious, but no A/C or electricity for the fans and no hot water was discouraging. It was peaceful just to sit on the thatched gazebo and watch the river and boats go by. It's a nice place to stay if you just want to "veg" out.
