A WARM WELCOME

NEALBOURNE on 20/11/2017 08:29

The Murray Arms is an old coaching inn steeped in history (Robbie Burns visited in 1793) and centrally located in this area of outstanding natural beauty. Twelve rooms with all the usual facilities, a dining area with a comprehensive menu of appetising platters to suit every taste, a snug bar, a cosy lounge area. Plenty of parking space right on the doorstep. Reasonable prices and good value. But what impressed us most was the warm and friendly welcome from owners Jim and Helen. They and their attentive staff made our two-night stay quite memorable and we can thoroughly recommend the Murray Arms.

Welcoming and friendly

It is many years since I last stayed at the Murray Arms and I was happy to return. Delightful, helpful and friendly staff, the rooms are comfortable and the food freshly cooked. Although the cocktail bar is tiny, there is a larger bar beyond the dining room with comfortable chairs and a log burner - great for a cold winter evening.

Delightful food and friendly staff

As the title says really....my husband and I found the food delightful and the staff so very friendly. We stayed in a local holiday cottage and ate on a Friday evening. Then staff were more than accommodating at providing food that wasn’t on the menu and the food came out piping hot and very very tasty. We hadn’t realised it was only a two star hotel, but the food was certainly five stars! We’ll definitely be back again when next in the area.

Okay but could be better

I stayed here one night in September, it was booked via my work so I didn't know anything about the place on arrival.

I was in a single room which was small but had a good comfy bed, TV, nice shower and toilet. The bathroom looked like it had been recently renovated and was clean. The room was in an acceptable condition, some wallpaper was peeling off the walls but nothing major.

The room I had didn't have central heating and only had a small wee heater on the wall, it was a warm night when I was staying so coldness wasn't an issue.

The room had plenty of charging points to charge my devices and it also had a kettle and some tea/coffee for me. It's worth noting there is NO hairdryer, or if this is I didn't find it.

Breakfast was being served at 8-9am so quite late for us as we had to start work at 8:30am half an hour away. The receptionist did say we were welcome to grab some toast and juice before we left as everything would be set up for the breakfast which I did so no real hassle there. But one to be aware of.

I got no phone signal on my EE, O2 or Vodaphone phones while in the hotel and unfortunately the Wifi wasn't working that night either. So again one to be aware of.

As the hotel is also a pub and restaurant the noise levels late into the night were quite off putting and after a long day I just wanted to get an early night but due to the noise from downstairs this wasn't possible.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely and the waitress was friendly. Unfortunately the well advertised hand dived scallops weren't on the menu so this was a massive disappointment.

Overall my stay was okay but not sure I'd be back.

Over night stay was just ok

Friends paid & booked the hotel for us so didn't want to complain. Room was tired & dated but ok for 1 night. Seemed to be ok but later noticed dust in round the tv. Trouser press broken. Room was chilly so plugged in the radiator but found I had to put it on to manual to get it to work. A bright blue light shone all night. Bed was very comfortable except the mattress protector was lined with plastic & I woke few times sticking to the bed. Bed was a king size with a double quilt!
Was disgusted by bathroom. Line of black mould around the bath, shower hose was sticky with soap & mouldy too but worst of all was the shower head which was completely black with mould around the water jets. Rest of bathroom was clean - mirror a bit smeared but couldn't bring myself to have a shower.
Had a lovely breakfast. Bit late arriving down (was trying to wash in the sink) so had to rush to order but really enjoyed my breakfast. The gentleman who served was very nice & checked if we needed anything more despite us be at the end of service. Friends stayed in hotel at the same time & seemed to have a refurbished room although they did say the bathroom was dated. I know they are likely working around to refurbishing all rooms but don't think that's an excuse to neglect the standard of cleaning in the rest of the rooms. Need a new shower head & hose in room 10 & then give the old one a good clean with a mould spray to make it as good as new. Mould spray applied to the silicone & left for 30mins would completely remove the mould around the bath.
