Overnight stay
halteres2017on 24/09/2017 14:24I stayed at Night Lodge when another hotel in Newport was overbooked. I arrived at about 10:00 p.m., walked round Newport, and went to bed. Then I woke at about 7:00 p.m. and travelled on by rail. The room was clean, and basic. It was very hard to move round inside the room. I could hear many squeaky floorboards from other guests. They could no doubt hear me. I was glad of somewhere to sleep for one night but would not extend a stay.
Poor value but staff friendly
DeborahB1976on 18/09/2017 15:31This was a last minute booking due to being in a 4 hour traffic jam on the M5. The £40 a night single room I stayed in had stains on the carpet and the outside of the shower looked filthy. The mattress was stained and uncomfortable, pillows also uncomfortable. Every floorboard in the room creaked and the noise from the street and the hotel corridor was horrendous. Didn't have the breakfast as it was £5 extra. The sheets and towels were clean, soap and tea/coffee making facilities were also provided. Mo on reception was very friendly and helpful and it was good that they had last minute availability but I wouldn't stay there again.
Glad it was there - but!
gappygrinon 12/09/2017 18:01I was booked elsewhere but due to a cock up they had to find me elsewhere. So yeah I was pleased this place had a room free. The plus sides are free parking - this free parking sets you back from the road so was quiet.
However, some thought needs to go into things just realising how dirty the walls looked means repainting (maybe in a darker colour) is necessary. Whilst the carpet was showing signs of wear and age it was clean.
The room was a double, probably about the size of the single room elsewhere, but yeah was a double bed - nowhere to sit but had a double bed. The towels were nice and soft making a nice change from the starched ones normally in hotels.
The tv shared a plug with the kettle so I could have a cuppa or watch tv but not both at the same time. Also strange to find the wardrobe in the way of the light switch.
Hot water from shower was ok and WiFi good. The car park also a bonus - would I stay again? Yeah if i had to but would try other places first - I never had breakfast but that was £5 for continental so not my idea of eating while away.
Good value for money (budget hotel)
Roger Jon 21/03/2017 18:26I was charged £40 per night plus £5 for a continental breakfast which was served by a very pleasent man. My room (No 9) was on the second floor reached by very steep stairs but, on arrival, my case was carried up to my room by the man on reception.
The rom was tiny but had everything I wanted for a two night stay. There were tea and coffee facilities plus wi-fi.
The hotel address is Stow Hill but the entrance is only for use after 22:00 hrs, the entrance/car park is in North Street. On regtering I was given the combination to the entrance door and could come and go freely until 22:00hrs.
Regarding an evening I was told that the Weatherspoons t the bottom of North Street was good value, how wrong can you get. The first three items I ordered from the menu were not available and the fish (and chips) was still frozen in the centre. Again, when I tried to order a desert the first two items I chose were not available. The bar staff with whom I ordered seemed only to want to serve drinkers!
The next night I went to The Pen and Wig in Stow Hill. The food was good
and the bar staff were interested in taking my order-Recommended.
Perfect place to stay on a budget
Camille Lon 20/12/2016 22:39This hotel was perfect for my needs, and I managed to get it at the last minute. I had stayed in another hotel on my first pass through Newport, which through no fault of their own was far too loud -- switching to the Night Lodge was a perfect solution. It's far away enough from the "night life" that I got a decent night's sleep, while still being very close to shops and supermarkets, the train station, and all the major buses to get to the attractions. Newport is an excellent hub from which to see Southeastern Wales -- possibly the best one, I can't emphasize that enough. The proprietor of Night Lodge is a very kind and spiritual person, and I wish him all the success in the world. (He will shout you awake in the morning if you sleep past checkout time, though.) A clean and comfortable budget option. Highly recommended.
