Uncomfortable budget accommodations

We stayed here for two nights as part of a post cruise tour. This hotel caters almost exclusively to such tour groups. The rooms are very basic, but unfortunately are not air conditioned so it is warm and stuffy for sleeping. We attempted to open the window but as there were no screens and many flying insects we were quickly invaded. The buffet breakfast is adequate, but area is too small for the large groups they book. We did not eat in the restaurant as the menu looked unappetizing and not regional or French in any way. This facility is probably best for a one night budget stopover, but unappealing for a vacation or getaway.

Overcrowded

Room looking very tired, needs to be modernised. The evening meal is something I will not repeat, will look for another restaurant. Breakfast was a mad house, too many people in too small a space. Food was running out, coffee machines, two, had long queues all the time. Not enjoyable.

Too full for comfort

Novotel Amboise is a victim of its own sucess.
We were told on check in that the restaurant was full, but they could recommend places in town. No thanks. We choose Novotels so we know we can eat when we get there and not do any more driving. It used to be that a resident was guaranteed a table in a hotel, but no more. I had to ask if room service was still operating, thankfully yes. Our meal was delivered even faster than the reasonable 30mins promised on the phone. It was a good meal.
Breakfast the next morning showed just how busy the hotel was, but other Novotels can accomodate big groups in seperate areas..why not this one in the middle of chateaux country? The American tour group we saw must have been expected.?
Our check out was cheerful, but the lesson here is avoid August/Tourist hot spots and school holidays.

Lovely hotel. Service in restaurant could be better.

Fantastic location, Lovely facilities, including a pool, tennis courts and mini golf. Surprisingly, even in August, the pool wasn't amazingly busy which was good.
Rooms very nice with lovely views.
Restaurant has amazing views too and very well done. The service was not so great however, as we were never asked if we wanted more drinks or any condiments and the "well-done" burger was raw in the middle (waitress kept on insisting we wanted medium!). It would also have been nice to know that the meal would be charged straight to the room, so no need to wait to sign anything (we spent a long time trying to get the attention of a waiter to get the bill!).
Would definitely go back, but would think twice about using the restaurant again.

Gem of a hotel

This was a randomly chosen stop over hotel. Amboise turned out to be a stunning place (highly recommend the land train) where Leonardo Da Vinci lived his last few years. The hotel is about a 15 minutes walk from the center. This is the first Novotel I've stayed at that is actually in the countryside (makes a nice change from a city or industrial park). Plenty of free parking, lovely reception staff and it has a nice (but cold - which can be nice give how hot the weather was) pool, tennis courts and crazy golf. The views from the hotel look down to the center and you can see the château. It seem popular with coach trips so you might be unlucky and arrive to see the reception full of people trying to check in that just got off a coach and the resteraunt might be fully booked. Lots of places to eat in Amboise though. Definitely coming back in the future to explore Amboise more.
