Nice hotel

We had a business meeting there last week, so used a meeting room, had a buffet lunch, stayed overnight and had breakfast.
It's an old hotel with character - creaking floors and chandeliers and was decorated nicely. It's set in nice grounds with houses around. Staff were helpful and pleasant.
The buffet was fine for lunch.
The room I stayed in was large and had all you needed.
The bed was bouncy and no pillow choice but they were ok.
For some reason radiators were on full blast and couldn't be turned off and I couldn't work the air con at all. There was a fridge with water in it which was good to have.
The breakfast was enjoyable with fruit and cooked items, juice, coffee etc.
If in the area I would stay again.
Afternoon Tea

I visited as part of a group of 7 for afternoon tea. We had the place to ourselves. The presentation and treats were spectacular.
Great range of teas, different sandwiches and cakes, we couldn't finish it all but were given boxes to take what was left away.
Staff were very welcoming and courteous.
Mixed review - in some ways a great hotel, but a few issues really let it down.

I had great difficulty deciding how to rate this hotel and write the review as the last few days here have been quite mixed.
We stayed here for three nights as part of a big group. On arrival there seemed to be a mix up as they only had one of us staying, so hadn't given us a double room. I'm unsure if this was the fault of the hotel or the agent that booked the room, but the staff were very professional and it was quickly resolved without fuss. The hotel is currently undergoing some refurbishment, and we were surprised to find the doors to the corridor our room was on to be covered up with cardboard and a sign warning that only those wearing appropriate safety gear should continue. Thinking there must be a mix up, I went downstairs to be told that the room was perfectly accessible. Sensing my uncertainty the receptionist accompanied me upstairs and assured us that the sign was irrelevant. I wish we had pushed to have our room moved, since the noise of the builders over the weekend doesn't make for a relaxing break. Plus Saturday night there was a wedding or celebration of some kind. The noise was so loud, you would have thought it was happening in our room! We waited until gone midnight to phone reception and ask when it would be ending. The receptionist informed us it would go on until 1am and acted shocked that this may in any way be seen as negative by us. No apology was offered and the suggestion was made that they could ask for the music to be turned down. It would need to be turned down a lot to not impact on our sleep (and I grew up in London so am pretty used to having background noise), plus I feel sorry for those celebrating to be asked to quieten down.
The room itself was kept nicely enough and clean, although the bath has some strange staining. The room had also only been set up for one guest, with one towel, set of toiletries etc. The tea and coffee had also not been topped up, although there were clean cups.
As I said, we were staying as part of a big group and Friday evening there was a BBQ. Well, I have never seen such a pitiful effort, and it was an embarrassment to the European guests with us. They ran out of meat with still a large number of us waiting to eat and brought out desert even though we hadn't had our main course! Eventually some more meat was brought out, but my partner who is vegetarian had to simply eat the salad as, despite asking several times, they were unable to cook him a veggie burger or salmon (as had been available at the beginning). There was no bread or rolls provided. Pudding was nice, but not what I would expect from a place clearly trying to market itself as providing top quality food.
Breakfast was fantastic with a wide variety to cater to everyone's tastes. Service was lacking however. On both the Saturday and Sunday morning I had to prompt for the waiters to bring coffee and on the whole guests were left to their devices. Running my own business means having to find time to catch up on work when I can, so I spent quite a lot of time in the hotel lobby drinking hot chocolate. The wifi is very reliable and the service at the bar cannot be faulted.
In general this is a reasonable hotel, but do not stay here if you are after a quiet and relaxing break, despite its country house image.
High Brownlee Points

Think I might be spending a bit of time in London on business and not wishing to actually stay overnight in town, I searched for a hotel out of town that could become a regular pit stop for the future
Oatlands looked like an option to trial
I arrived on the Friday night and was checked in efficiently by much maligned Europeans !
My room, 1114 on the first floor - near the lift as requested, was neat tidy and clean in all respects. Bed comfy, bathroom as it should be
After settling in I booked for supper in the Mulberrry Restaurant - not expecting a great deal.
I was immensely surprised.
I had a home made Gravadlax with a tasty and mild Dijon mustard sauce and some leaves - and opened a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc at £30 - both were excellent - pity I could get some brown bread to compliment this excellence until I had actually finished eating it - and I know it was good because I tried to relish every mouthful --- 9/10
I had seared Sea Bass as the main with Jersey Royals, Fine beans and some leaves and cherry tomatoes....
Awesomely good - so hard to believe this was a £30 x 3 course menu
The main was perfect - no criticisms whatsoever - unheard of from me
The dessert was a chocolate tart with cherries and a coulis - good but not great for just enough.
To end with I celebrated with a 10 year old Laphroiag - perfect too but at £12 per shot the shot should have been considerably more generous.
Mahmood who looked after me was a top man - well done.
Surprisingly, when I tried to repeat the experience on the Saturday night - it was fully booked. ! And I was a hotel guest - the trick here is to assume the grub is gonna be good and make a restaurant booking when you book your room
I visited a local new restaurant called Luciens - more about that elsewhere - suffice to say Lucifers might have been closer to the mark !!!
Overall this was a very good place to stay and gains 8 Brownlee Points for excellence.
I will stay again but there was one issue - management needs to invest in a size 12 boot and place it firmly and powerfully in the butt of the incompetent who does their PAT tests and whoever checks the room electrics outside the PAT test routine.
In my room the side light cable was connected to a plugged in plug which did not possess any cover at all. OK it was behind the bedside cabinet but if a child had dropped a town down there and tried to retrieve it - and touched to open mains - that child would have been dead. This was a very serious issue and not to be taken lightly.
To their credit, when alerted to the issue, management closed off the room until repairs had been effected.
Nice stay

Had a nice stay here recently for work. The room was ok, but the shower lacked and real pressure. The sink did somehow flood the bathroom, but didn't spend time investing that!! The food was good and there was lots of it. The location is very good.
