Very comfortable place in Obertraun, away from the crowds and prices of Hallstatt.

Lovely Obertraun is across the lake from Hallstatt, 5 km by road or bike trail, but the most beautiful way to visit Hallstatt is to ride the ferries or the small flat boats across. The manager in this hotel was welcoming and helpful, with good suggestions on things to do, places to eat and how to get around. The hotel is typical Austrian Alps quaint on the outside, with functional furniture and decorations on the inside. Our room and bathroom were large and comfortable, with a large balcony loaded with flowers. Breakfast was good with a fairly large selection. Obertraun is quiet at night, with two restaurants, a cafe, and one bar. We would definitely return to the Obertrauner Hof when we return to the Lake Hallstatt area!
bland and functional

The Hallstättersee is well equipped with hotels large and small but many of them come at a price that reflects the region’s ageless popularity. The traffic situation in Hallstatt itself makes the nearby village of Obertrauen a good alternative. The Obertrauner Hof, however, is a disappointment. In a region known for its attractive folksy architecture, this is a bland, functional building with neither character nor charm, aimed apparently primarily at package tourists and a little run down in its public areas. The reception staff were all Hungarian, with barely a word of German and limited English, with nobody at reception at all after 6 p.m. or so. The room itself was OK, with a large bathroom and a balcony, and not expensive, but anyone looking for a touch of Austrian authenticity will be badly disappointed here.
Family Friendly Stay, Helpful Staff

We had a nice stay at this pleasantly run hotel. We had two good-sized rooms during our weekend ski trip. The breakfast was a nice spread and the staff was very helpful and friendly. There are games and movies to entertain kids of all ages. The only down side was that walls are a bit thin and for a light sleeper like me, it was sometimes difficult when other guests stayed up late talking and moving around.
Tasty breakfast with very nice server, great place to relax after awesome adventure in Hallstatt

I got a room with a big window where I can watch snows falling. The property is easy to find. The man welcoming us speak English fluently - well he's coming from London- and make many things simple. There are several books displayed in the lobby but mostly written in Germany so I couldn't read. I'd like to drink some cups of coffee and tea before sleeping but the hot water available was limited so I could only drink once. However in the morning the breakfast menu perfectly satisfy my tongue and stomach. I was there with a friend who loves yogurt very much and we got a bunch of delicious yogurt with various taste. I always love to have egg for my breakfast but I couldn't find any, but then the server come to our table and offer to bring boiled egg for us two. C'est parfait.
A peaceful and better alternative B&B to those of Hallstatt

First, it's about the location. Since all accommodation in Hallstatt was full, I had to seek a B&B in a neaby area. When I started planning the route, I found Obertraun a perfect alternative. After I stayed, I found it even a better alternative. This is because everyone visiting Hallstatt would visit the Salt Mine, and the Ice Cave. The former is at the Hallstatt side; and the latter is at the Obertraun side. However, Obertraun has i). all buses first passed through it, then Hallstatt to other regions, like St. Wolfgang and Gosausee; and ii). it has a train station! For Hallstatt you will need to take a Ferry to get to the Hallstatt train station.
The price level at Obertraun is lower than in Hallstatt; and is much quieter than Hallstatt's busy streets.
Let's talk about Obertrauner Hof. We stayed in a room with balcony. The room was spacious and sparkling clean. Andrew, the owner speaks perfect English. He greeted us and showed us the ways to different tourist spots, as well as all sorts of important information like weather forecast and activities information. The breakfast was always a good start for the day.
Unfortunately my wife felt unwell on the day we departed. Andrew warmly allowed us to stay an extra hour after the check-out time until our shuttle arrived at the door. This is delighting.
One bad news is that there are not that many choices for restaurants in that area. Luckily all of them are excellent ones.
