What People are saying

Quaint Stay in the City

benjkeefe77 on 16/11/2017 15:02

The Old Chicago Inn is, well, kinda old. But that's not a bad thing, as it's full of character and in a great spot. It's super close to the trains, and within walking distance of a number of restaurants and other spots. The owners were super friendly and helpful in terms of recommendations, some of which we tried and enjoyed.

The rooms are very small, and most have a bathroom outside of your room. We happened to stay in one of the rooms where we had an attached bathroom, which was convenient. We did not check out the speakeasy at night, though did enjoy the continental breakfast there. There was good coffee and tea, along with fruit, danish, etc. Pretty standard.

Two negatives regarding our stay. One, being an old building, the walls are super thin. I'm not a fan of being able to hear someone wake up and use the restroom in the middle of the night. The second was not a major deal, but there were heating issues the weekend we stayed there. They were on top of it, however, and provided electric heaters to everyone to make sure no one was cold. That worked fine.

So, I would recommend it, just know that this is not a cookie cutter chain hotel where everything is shiny and new.

Charming inn in great location

We stayed 4 nights here, loved the décor and old time feel of the inn. We had a fireplace in our room, which was very nice to have. This place is full of period antiques, and the décor is art deco style, giving a feel of old Chicago. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about local sights and restaurants. We did go to the speakeasy in the basement. It was done up in authentic prohibition era décor, and they served cocktails from original period recipes! They also had live entertainment, a piano player who was very good. The bed in our room, 2A, was surprisingly comfortable. It was awesome to be able to fall asleep every night to a live fire in the fireplace. We would certainly return to this inn on our next visit to the Windy City!

Not Good!

We booked room 1C based upon the info and picture posted on Old Chicago Inn’s website What a mistake! Talk about misleading! The image posted has a cozy room with clean carpet, paint, etc. (see attached image with nice brown plaid comforter on bed). The real room 1C has paint that is chipping, carpet so dirty that we never took our shoes off, a old worn out chair and a bed that is not comfortable (see remaining attached images). I emailed Virginia, the owner about 1) the false advertising on her website and 2) the poor condition of the room. Her response was offering a 50% discount on the room, which I accepted. She never mentioned the false advertising on the website. Needless to say, will not stay here again.

Should have looked at reviews before booking!

While the room was comfy and location wonderful this entire building needs a good cleaning. Dusty, blankets clearly not washed, and windows don't stay open to help freshen the room. But the worst experience was asking for ice from the barkeeper (no ice machine) and being told no - rudely! Even though we were guest there. Seriously? Would not recommend this place in spite of it's charm.

Enjoyed this B & B very much

If you are looking for luxuries of a big fancy motel, this isn't the place for you. We stayed 4 nights here. It is a quaint little hotel built in 1902 (I think), 3 floors (all steps, no elevator). We were located on the 3rd floor..our room was small & yes, our bathroom was down the hall. Street noise, squeaky floors or noises from other rooms were no problem for us. Actually, all we did was sleep here...we were sightseeing & going to Cub games the rest of the time. It is located about an half mile from Wrigley field, 1 block from the "L" train & nestled among many restaurants. David (the innkeeper) was super nice, quite helpful in giving us info on getting around the area. We drove so we were given a daily "free" pass for on street parking (we were parked about 3 blocks away). We also got $10 coupons for Trader Todds restaurant which is located about 2 doors down. The 3rd floor had a nice little sitting area with a microwave & little refrigerator. Breakfast was served in the lower level (usually coffee cake, hot cereal, fruit, orange juice, yogurt and a breakfast casserole on Saturday morning). There is also a speak easy in the lower level, but we never made it down there. I would say if you want to be close to Wrigley field & the Cubs, this is the place to stay. Also, the "L" is a great way to get to the sights (Shedd Aquarium, the planetarium, Art Musuem, Field musuem).
