Based on the Trip Advisor reviews and high rating, we stayed at this hotels with the half-board option for two nights. We were disappointed.
Overall, we found the staff pleasant and helpful. Sauna facilities were good. The hotel condition was fine but not exceptional. The hotel ground was quite limited with the hotel front right next to the street. (Rooms on the front of the hotel would not have a good view). Here are the serious flaws.
We booked two better rooms - Nature Plus Suite with balcony facing the valleys on the other side of the street. The rooms were spacious and well laid out. However, we were assigned to the 1st floor rooms. The view was not good. Our view of the mountains were spoiled by the roof top of the spa building below. (Recommend asking for higher floor rooms at booking time to assure a better view). The balcony was not quiet. The hotel was too close to the main highway at the same height level so the traffic noises from the trucks on the main highway made any lounging in the balcony unpleasant.
The dinner food was very salty and somewhat eccentric with limited choices. The food was probably catering to local taste rather to international standard. Without a variety of menu choices, we found the food not suitable to our taste. All four of us, who are seasoned travelers around the world, would rate the hotel dinner food the worst of all the dinners on our three-weeks tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The most unpleasant part of our stay was the presence of flies in the dining room with every meal. We made complaints to the staff on the very first day at tea. Nothing was done about the flies. So, we spent 2 breakfast and 2 dinners swatting flies (killed 3 to 4 flies every meal). The staff explained that the cause of flies were because of agricultural activities in the area during the summer.
In summary, this hotel might be designed for ski season travelers not to international travelers during the summer. We do not recommend this hotel to international travelers visiting the Austrian Alps during the summer time, unless some improvements would be made by the management.

Good location, not far from fast road. Staff are very polite. The food is great. Bus station is just 50m away and goes directly to mail "gondola". After ski day, you can have coctails or wines on the hotel bar.

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Outside.
Every detail was well thought out and made for a beautiful holiday.
Amazing food!
The family that runs this welcoming hotel is taking care to ensure a wonderful experience.
The spa is clean and well taken care of.
I had a brilliant healing massage.
So recommended.

We spent a week with our two small kids there. The location is brilliant and all the nearby key spots of the national park are easy to reach (at least by car). The village itself is not spectacular but the surroundings offer many hiking options.
The hotel is nicely decorated and the recently refurbished rooms (we had a Nature Suite) are very comfi. The food is absolutely great, from breakfast to dinner. A lot of choice, and the personal not having an issue to come up with something which is not on the menu if you would need an alternative. Vegetarians are as well happy with the choice offered. The only but might be the breakfast fruit juices which are not freshly pressed, but home made smoothies are offered. Tiny but more than good enough spa. And some other services we did not use like the lending of rucksacks are cool.
Net: a very good choice if you are looking for a comfortable but still affordable hotel for a week in the region.

The hotel is to be recommended. The staff is very attentive, kind and helpful. The hotel has a nice surrounding, with a nice garden/natural pool , a spa area with steam baths and sauna with daylight, all tidy and properly cared . The hotel is located in the centre of Matrei, good for hiking.For us, skiers, there is a free shuttle, 50 m from the hotel, driving directly to7from Goldried Gondel station.We would rather prefer ski in/out, but is still acceptable. The hotel's best thing, beside its staff, is the food: good quality, freshly made, tasty, with nice variety of breakfast-the bread and jam are home made. The dinners are also tasty. if you don t like the Menu, they will prepair you any dish upon your wish.In the basement. there are heated lockers for drying shoes and a place to deposit the skiis.
The only thing I disliked-the outdated room we got-Berg room.Take renovated Natur suit instead!
When I come back to Matrei/Kals. I will definitely consider of returning to the Outside..
