What People are saying
Extremely Disappointed

My husband and I frequently stay in The Kimpton Hotels all across the USA,and we have even stayed at this The Kimpton Hotel Palomar, usually their service is top notch. I have to say, I was extremely disappointed during our last stay, May 24-26, 2017.
My less than stellar stay, started as I arrived to Valet and there were about 6 cars parked and no where to pull up to Valet and unload. I was traveling with our dog and after I double parked and called one of the three valet guys that were just standing there talking, I got a little help but no offer to porter our bags.
At the front desk, I was barely greeted, barely spoken to, and checked-in, very unusual for any Kimpton, I was asked if I would like a dog bed and bowls, which I said yes and they arrived quickly to the room.
The Front Desk staff, never mentioned the Wine Hour in the Lobby,
( I know most Kimptons provide this nice touch )after going to the room and getting situated, when I came back down and asked about wine, he said it was 5-6, its over now and gave me a coupon for a drink in the bar.
He also did not mention what time Coffee would be served in the morning. There are not any coffee makers in the rooms, so you have to go down to the lobby for coffee in the morning.
Since, I often travel with Bands on Tour, we are up late and not early risers, so by the time we went down for coffee, 9:30 am, I think, it was already put away.
The Room was nice and bed comfortable, but this year it seems they have replaced the plush, animal print robes, with thin white generic robes. Disappointing.
Another issue we had, our shower did not drain and filled up with water completely overflowing onto the bathroom floor.
There is a nice pool and a pool bar, which wasn't opened during the time,
I was there, not sure of the hours, it is open. There is also an attached restaurant, but it closes early, luckily, there are so many other restaurants to choose from in The Gaslamp area that are close and open later. Easy walk or Uber
Sometimes, we don't have a choice of what hotel we stay in, however in the future if I have a choice in San Diego, I would probably choose elsewhere. Sad, because we have always had such great service from this hotel in the past.
Kimpton Quality

Like virtually all of the Kimpton hotels, the Palomar is simply top-notch. Three of us stayed in a suite on the pool level. What was particularly nice about the suite is that the room with the sofa bed had its own 1/2 bath which provided extra privacy.
While the pool had a number of people in it early in the evening, it was not that noisy and the hotel seemingly enforces the 8 pm closing time so at night it was quiet. Like all Kimptons, they have a wine social from 5-6 pm with little snacks from their restaurant which is a nice touch if you are going to have a late dinner.
Our room was on the 5th avenue side of the hotel so on Saturday evening you do hear the noise from people in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Check-in was effortless and the staff extremely friendly, following up with text messages over our stay in inquire as to whether we needed anything further.
Just an overall good stay at another Kimpton.
Nice Boutique Style Hotel in the middle of the Gas lamp District.

I have stayed at a few Kimpton Hotels, and the Palomar follows the same formula, boutique style with interesting and modern decor, free coffee in the am and a free happy hour from 5-6pm.
While the room I stayed in was spacious with a large balcony, I wasn't overwhelmed by it. The bed was comfortable, the balcony while very spacious was dirty with beer bottles from the previous guests when we arrived. It took 2 days for them to finally clean it, I'm not sure if it was because we were there during Memorial Day weekend and I believe they were fully booked. We requested a cot and had to call down again after checking in to have one sent up. Not a big deal, but just small things that could have been a bit smoother.
While the front desk staff was certainly very nice, outstanding service in my opinion was provided by the adjoining restaurant. There was a heavyset man (sorry do not mean at all to insult him, just did not catch his name) and a Latina woman who were both so kind. The food at the adjoining restaurant was great, however there are also some really good restaurants within walking distance in the Gas lamp. While I felt totally safe in the Gas lamp area and of course in the hotel, I did get a bit nervous walking around in the evening (around 8-9ishpm) when you make a right out of the hotel towards CVS. Other than that, the hotel is in a great location and is so convenient for anyone looking to be in the heart of the downtown action.

I took a trip with a friend to explore a new city. We were excited to stay near so many fun things including the Gas Lamp and not far from Harbor Drive. The hotel did not disappoint when it comes to proximity of things to do and places to eat!! The hotel itself has a restaurant however time ran out before we could try it. The pool area is very nice with a bar. We had some great drinks as we relaxed and listened to the DJ who I guess they bring in on Saturdays in the Spring/Summer? The rooms were clean, beds were comfortable. My only complaints are 1) we were on the backside of the building without a view but the worst part was how we could smell food being prepped in the kitchen below Im assuming as there were possibly kitchen vents? This was a bit nauseating when we were attempting to go to bed. 2) the walls must be a bit thin- or we had horribly noisy neighbors. All night on our first night the door next door was slamming shut and we could hear people talking and chairs/furniture being moved across (the beautiful) wood floors. Again not the Hotels fault but it did cause us very minor discomforts. Overall, great stay though, I'd go back for sure and possibly request a room on the front, or pay more for it?
Lovely hotel, opportunities for bar improvements.

Great little boutique hotel, friendly staff, clean, modern and intimate. Nice complimentary happy hour and snacks every day, a welcome touch. The rooms are comfortable, though clothes pegs are missing. There is a small wardrobe, but nowhere to just hang your jacket or the clothes you have worn but don't want to put back in the wardrobe. It meant the armchair became a dumping zone.
The bar closes at 10pm which I find really early for a hotel bar. Also, I was at the pool 4 days in a row and it was never manned by anyone. That's a miss here. The pool needs more attention. There was no opportunity for a drink or snack.
Otherwise a lovely place and great location.
