Unique luxury location

Pushed the boat out to stay in this ancient, rejuvenated castle which is the highlight of this fortified town. The views from it and the interior detail, made it worth every penny! We had a superb first floor corner room with ensuite bathroom. We could see out across the town and down over the plains and hear the water from the river and dam below, unless the external air conditioning unit kicked in. The staff were most helpful in the bar and amazing restaurant at breakfast, where the Eggs Benedict was superb. The town has lots of quiet wandering and beautiful views to offer, as well as a number of ancient churches. Unfortunately the only way to view the latter is on twice daily tours, in Spanish, which could have been explained better to me-I saw a leaflet but with poor Spanish and lack of foresight, asked no more about. The church with murals by Jesus Mateo is stunning and can be viewed for 3euros-a bargain! The tourist office was very informative.

A Historical Castle part of a medieval village

Stingray44 on 12/10/2017 13:05

South east of Madrid and directly west of Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, this stunning medieval village sits on top of a rocky ravine looking down over the River Jucar
Steeped in history, this medieval castle has seen many sieges and revolts. It was founded by the Muslims in the 8th century and was then captured by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century. It was rebuilt by the Marquises de Villena and during the 14th Century it became the home of the famous Spanish prose writer Don Juan Manuel.
Most of the original wall that surrounded the village is still intact, and it would be hard to find a more unspoiled historic village in this region - which, of course, is one of the reasons why it has become a UNESCO Historic-Artistic Site.
The castle itself was converted into Parador Alarcon (Hotel Maquuis de Villena) and after months of work was reopened to the public in 2003 with great emphasis placed on ensuring that the internal structure of the building was in keeping with its great history.
This 4 star hotel has four twin bedded rooms and ten double bedrooms (All have private bathroom, television and telephone) and is a real find, not only for its historical surroundings but also for its customer service, comfortable quietness and outstanding food (Tip - try the egg bernadict for breakfast – its fantastic!)

Fantastic location and tranquil stay

The castle is very impressive, well appointed, modern facilities in a fantastic location. There's very little in the town. One very hospitable bar with great tapas and a couple of restaurants that open after 8.30pm. The art work and acoustics in the church are amazing.

Fascinating, but poor value for the price paid

Once you are inside the hotel room, you could be in any hotel - other than the tiny slit-like windows, there's nothing special about the (rather small) rooms themselves.

A better idea would be to stay elsewhere in the village and then come to the castle for a drink in the bar. You can see all the same common areas of the castle if you come for a drink, and with the money you save, you could even buy dinner in the castle dining room (about €50 a person without alcohol).

Spectacular castle - small and soooooo quiet

PAC6750 on 30/09/2017 22:16

We stayed as part of a motorbike tour so only one night and with 15 of us took every room in the hotel - the rooms are small but well equipped and all have spectacuar views However many have very small slit or tiny square windows ( due to its castle origins obviously) but this means that you only really get to appreciate the views if you are peering out from right next to the glass ( which was filthy which didnt help ) obviously cleaning the windows on the outside in this building must be an uber challenge but it IMO needs to be addressed. There are a few really sexy rooms that other luckily ended up in that were fantastic - in the main tower with access to the roof these are definitely the ones to ask for as the highest ramparts are only accessible though these rooms so if you arent staying in one you are unlikely to be able to get up there.
Bar is large and and the courtyard seating area is beautiful.
The dining room is more a banqueting hall and the food and service was excellent other than our group there was only two other couples in the place though so atmosphere would be a problem unless you are happy having a very quiet night.
I would love to take my wife here because it is so spectacular but would only stay one night as once youve seen the building there really isnt much else to do either in the hotel or immediate vicinity
