    What People are saying

Budget property, close to the Deer Park

    Shiladitya S on 07/08/2017 17:56

This is, at best, a budget property with commensurate service levels. Nothing great about this tourist accommodation, but just a small place with a homely and cosy feel.

It is located very near the deer park in the lalbandh area, and off from the main road. This, we found could be a deterrent for visitors travelling without their own vehicle, as the toto-wallahs have a habit of fleecing unassuming passengers on every pretext. Sadly, the hotel does nothing to alleviate their plight! The approach road is a 'kachcha' one, ie dusty and unmetalled, with very poor lighting, running through a crop of mud houses.

The hotel, or rather "inn" I should call it, is neatly maintained, with nice flowering plants and shrubs interspersed with a cobbled path zigzaging the way from entrance to the dwelling area. A few shades and canopies with underneath sitting areas make for nice 'addas', where small groups can sit around the tables and chit-chat while having tea, a meal or a snack.

Rooms are cosy and compact, one or two may have their private balconies, but most of them open out to a common verandah or lobby area. TVs, ACs and Geysers are all provided. But space inside the rooms is sparse and bathrooms are just ok. The bed is not very comfortable, but you may make do with it. In-room tea/coffee maker is also available, albeit tucked in a corner nestled on a tiny wooden shelf. Somehow, the rooms allotted to us were not smelling that 'fresh', nor did the upholstery appear anything more than just 'spartan'.

Food was reasonable, portions were sumptuous. However, it may be best to stick to staples and not try anything too adventurous, on the menu.

Liquour was not readily available, though they did assure they could get something against a small charge. It is best to carry your own, in case you may need. There is only one shop within some distance and that too, does not offer you much choices.

An advantage of this property is that they offer driver accommodation as well.

And of course, the deer park was within walking distance. Quite a few deer there.

Now for a few tips to` my fellow travellers who may wish to visit Shantiniketan and hence may be reading this piece.

    i. In case you are not planning to have a car at your disposal, it is best to opt for a property on the main road, as that will give you easier access to the hot spots around. Also, strolls in the evening or early morning could be easier if you are on the road.

ii. Please do your homework before you leave and have your 'places to visit' well listed in your mind. Otherwise, it may be a waste of money and time to trust the toto-wallahs, who take gullible tourists on useless trips around meaningless properties.

iii. Among other things, 'chhatim-tala', the museum complex, one or two of the eponymous trees that made it to the annals of Shantiniketan's history, some local 'haat' (flea markets), etc could be on your visiting itinerary.

iv. Wheelchair is readily available at the museum complex, in case you are travelling with somebody elderly or who may need such support.

    Love the Restaurant

I live in Santiniketan and often come to the garden restaurant when I need a break from the monotony of canteen food or my own cooking--it's great North Indian (and continental) food for a very reasonable price--would highly recommend the garlic naan and paneer butter masala!

    Nice hotel

On different occasions from 2008 and even last Jan (2016), I stayed here - with friends, family etc. I found this was an excellent place. It is a bit isolated, true. But that is not so much of a bother for people with strong legs, or people having their own or hired transportation. Food quality was decent so far. The staff was amicable. Only the credit card payment facility was not working in the last time.

Stay here only if you have own transportation

    rajarshi2016 on 10/04/2017 15:30

Decent place, cordial staff, food was good in terms of both quantity n taste. Just next to the Deer Park - though the same can be given a miss as it is hardly worth the visit.

The place has an in-house restaurant located on the top floor, but be warned, it is frequented by dubious locals who come after dusk to drink - though officially the hotel is not licensed to serve liquor. Carry your own tipple and other necessities as there no shops nearby.

Also, it is located quite some distance away from the main roads, so would make sense to stay here if you have your vehicle.
