Terrific Sunday Lunch

Six of us and a little one in a high chair had a terrific Sunday lunch today. We were warmly welcomed and taken care of throughout our lunch. Lovely open fire to warm us up as was rather chilly outside. The lunch was excellent, everything homemade, well cooked, lots of vegetables and loads of gravy. One of the best Sunday lunches we've had out for some time and very good value at only £7. Pity we were too full for the Apple pie. Will definitely return if ever in the area again.

Terry and Lorraine Turnbull have turned the once derelict station into a fine cafe / restaurant with B&B rooms. We stayed overnight on our final stage of the coast 2 coast cycle route. We were greeted with 'you must be ready for a cuppa'. Very welcoming. The dinner is not fine dining but there are a choice of beers and wines. Breakfast was substantial and set us up for the day ahead. The rooms are compact but comfortable and very clean. You wake up to the sounds of the moor, the sheep and the birds.
Breakfast history "lesson"

I drove here to meet my son who cycled here from Durham. We had a full English and chatted to the owners about how they created this living museum of the history of rural railways in northern England..before Beecham...the highest in the U.K. Inspiring. Artefacts and full English galore. Lucky to see the surrounding moor in full August heather bloom. Well done and Good luck.
Great location and lovely hosts

We stayed for one night mid week - having cycled up a huge hill outside of Stanhope it was great to be greeted with cup of tea. Despite being August it was chilly and sitting by fire with glass of wine prior to dinner was bliss. Food was excellent and generous portions. The room was small but comfortable - storage under bed helped to maximise space. It is quirky and lovely place with friendly hosts - homely rather than luxurious - highly recommend.
