What People are saying

large rooms

Petr J on 21/11/2017 14:47

This accommodation offers very comfortable large rooms with high ceilings. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, nice staff. The pension is located close to the Lisbon downtown and directly in the middle of the quarter full of bars, restaurants and pubs. Also if your room faces west, you have a nice view of Lisbon panorama, which is especially nice during sunset.

Real old-fashioned, and really excellent accommodation

This was my first visit to Lisbon, so I haven't got much basis or comparison within the city, but this place immediately reminded me of an old tenement building in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Absolutely 10/10 for atmosphere.

The lift (elevator) was the first extraordinary relic - a rickety, quaint little lift (but don't worry... it felt perfectly safe!) The corridors and rooms (well, the room I was in) were large, high-ceilinged affairs. They felt like they could very well be haunted, although I personally met no ghosts.

I only stayed here one night. Full disclosure - I stayed in an airbnb apartment for the rest of my time in Lisbon, but I could very happily have stayed here for several days. The only advantage of the airbnb was the kitchen, which I barely used because, frankly, Lisbon is a wonderful city and I didn't want to hang around the apartment cooking all the time!

My room in Pensao Londres was massive. Great value for money. I was staying by myself, but with a double and a single bed, this room would very comfortably have accommodated three. A large wardrobe and a writing desk were also available.

I saw a few reviews saying that Pensao Londres was damp and that the breakfast wasn't great. Ignore those, please! Do not let them dissuade you! It is an old building, and the bathroom my have had a few old damp patches, but was in perfectly good condition and clean - there has been good attention paid to the upkeep of the place!

I also lucked out a bit with my room as I had a door opening out onto a fire escape. It was no balcony, but I was able to step out comfortably and get a fantastic view over old Lisbon - the Alfama and out to the shore. A great place to watch the sunset.

The location is definitely worth a mention to. There is so much to do in Lisbon, and lots of good spots very nearby. You're right in the Principe Real, with nice bars and restaurants nearby, including noted curiosity, the Pavilhao Chines (quirky antique shop of a bar that may not be to everyone's tastes, but is worth a peek!) Barrio Alto is only a stone's throw away if you're after nightlife, and the other direction brings you to a nice jazz club, 'Hot Club'-just a few minutes walk away. The the ruins of the convento do carom are also only a few minutes' walk away (there is a very interesting archaeological museum there, but I also first happened upon the ruins at night... you could walk in for free, and this makes for a very spooky visit on a full-moon night, with the cats wandering around the ruins in the half light!)

So you are absolutely spoiled for stuff to do around the Pensao Londres.

I also want to dispel any reservations people may have around the breakfast. I read a few bad reviews on here. I wouldn't take any heed of them. Sure the breakfast is basic, but you've got cereal, milk, bread, cheese and meat. It's a basic continental style breakfast, but it does the job perfectly well. This is not an expensive hotel, and I was absolutely delighted with the value for money!

The only reason I only give this 4 stars is precisely because it's not a luxury hotel, but for me - and for most other travellers who just want a comfortable, convenient place for a few nights Pensao Londres is absolutely fantastic.

The only caveat I would add is that there is a staircase in the entrance to get to the lift, and I can't remember if there were wheelchair ramps, so if you have any special access requirements, it would definitely be worth emailing ahead to the hotel to check that they can accommodate these.

That aside, I would wholeheartedly recommend this place! Comfortable, old-fashioned (in a good way!), spooky (if you want it to be!), and great for a perfect stay in Lisbon!

Clean, good location and cheap!

At first glance I did not know what to think of this hotel but is absolutely great for the price and location, we paid 75 Euro per night for a room with a bathroom in fourth floor with a great view of Lisbon. Didn’t realise that continental breakfast was included so this saved us some money, which was a bonus, and was ok. The location was good, be prepared for some walking up the hills to get there, the funicular is quite expensive at 3,70 euro! Staff were very nice and friendly, I would stay again definitely, it’s an authentic old hotel full of character. Lisbon is a lovely place and the food is great.

Perfect location in Lisbon

We definitely appreciated the location, the friendly staff at the reception, the nice old-fashioned forniture in the rooms. It's very very close to the nightlife of Barrio Alto and strategical for the visit of the city.

Nice stay in old hotel

The hotel is an old building with a lot of character. It’s in a good location but the facilities are average, however, very good for the price. Our bedroom was small with no fridge or coffee/tea making facilities. Having said that, a good continental breakfast is provided in the price, as is internet which is a good speed. Hand held shower with very good pressure. Great view from our room. Reception is very helpful. I would come here again.
