What People are saying

1 night was too long

Sinead K on 14/09/2016 04:13

We stayed in the Hotel Portacavana for 1 night as a pit stop. It was a group of 4 girls, driving and we picked it because of the central location and free parking. It was a huge disappointment.

We arrived to find there was no parking. The location is great but after 1 lap around the streets we realised that there was nowhere to park at the hotel and we had to find a spot to pull in close by. No easy task in Trieste's small streets.
The door to the hotel wasn't open so a guy from the bar next door called the reception to let us in.
And it only got worse from there....
There was no lift so we lugged our bags up a flight of stairs to a stifling hot reception and waited. We had booked 2 rooms but were told that 1 room was in that building and the other was (back) down the stairs and in another building 5 minute walk away! As we were travelling together and this was never communicated or written anywhere we obviously didn't want to be separated. This is where things took a turn for the worse- the lady at reception had limited English which was only matched by our limited Italian and couldn't understand that we wanted to stay in 2 rooms in the one building. She proceeded to get very agitated, turned her back on us to make a call and then ignored us. The first guy appeared shortly after and was able to translate between us. They then got into a very heated discussion for the next 5 mins- completely ignoring us- trying to find a solution. Eventually it was resolved and they managed to find a second room in the same building.

The receptionist continued to be very rude and barely acknowledged us for the rest of the stay (in English or Italian) and was probably one of the rudest people I've ever met in any hotel. There was no air con in the rooms. The Wifi didn’t work. The shower felt like it was designed to fit small children only. The rooms were dusty and smelled of mould.

The random décor of the hotel is actually pretty cool and the location is excellent but the customer service and false information left a bitter taste.

One and half week

The hotel is situated right in the center of the city, therefore museums, shops, sightseeing, restaurants and seaside resorts are easily to be reached by feet. Despite the hotel is situated in the center, it is extremely quite. The room is comfortable, clean and cozy. The staff, who speaks Italian, English and Spanish, is truly nice and they are always at disposal for any need of their customers. WiFi connection functioned really great. The price, although isn't expensive at all, worth the quality, both for the service and the location. I do definitely recommend it.

Its fake

I booked this hotel because i have an early train schedule it mentioned in booking.com that its 6mins walk from train station. But its not!!!! The truth is its maybe 6 mins drive to train station. Second its not a hotel its just like a guesthouse. The picture in booking.com is far from what it really looks like. No lifts no lights on the entrance. Difficult to find. Not worth to pay 87 euros for a night its worst!!!

Unhelpful

First time I've written a negative review. Arrived to find we were actually staying in a un-staffed building at a different address. When we got there, another guest had locked the connecting door to the bathroom believing it was their private bathroom. Im not sure why they had a key to lock a communal area. Called the number on the website but no one spoke English and could help. After an hour we finally managed to get into the bathroom. When checking out we explained at the reception who didn't really acknowledge it or offer any apology.
There was also a sign to explain about the air conditioning but there was no unit in the room so it was incredibly hot with little ventilation.
I've stayed in many budget hotels but the lack of English speaking staff to help with an issue and acknowledging that there was an issue is really frustrating and disappointing.

Hotel Portacavana

Nice personnel, helpful, but not too clean, especially dust on all the wooden furniture tops. Restaurant food smells in the room, long-into-the-night noise from tourism on the streets below, no light in the stairwell at night if you go out, NO WIFI in upstairs rooms--you have to spend your free time in the office using your phone or computer there. My room didn't have enough light to read and my transformer for my hairdryer blew out in the bathroom outlet. The decor is bizarre--no place to rest and feel at home between outings. Couldn't wait for my 6 nights to end--I had already paid.

Location is central but in the middle of 100 winebars and caffes, packed with late-night noise.
